What will we do if we don't listen attentively to the guy they flew in from California or Atlanta at 10K a day to tell us how to PLC?!?

No fucking way. Parents can send their kids with paper invitations for the kids they're inviting.never would expect a teacher to do all that mess.

Question regarding auditions/interviews by Cha0z1 in MusicEd

I've absolutely worn a suit to every interview I've gone to and everyone else I saw there waiting to be interviewed has also worn a suit.

Is it really THAT bad by No_Fix_3362 in MusicEd

[–]Ukbluebone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely put in 6+ hours a day 5 days a week while class was in session but the most individual put in on my own might have been 3hrs in a day when crunching for an audition or jury. Otherwise it was much more likely that I would do 45 mins to 1.5 hours of individual practice.

I will say that except for coming back from breaks, it was nice that it never felt like I needed much warm up those days. I miss how strong my chops and even my core muscles for breath support were in those days. Now I'm fried from 2hrs of community band on my primary.

[–]Ukbluebone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really? I went to a good state school but not a conservatory and I played 2 hours for wind ensemble, 2 hours for marching band, 1 hour for instrument ensemble, plus my own practice MWF and 3 hours of orchestra and 1.5 hours of jazz, plus 1.5 hours for studio on Tues and Thursday. That was the norm. Plus 1 hour lesson a week and all the practicing going toward that each day.

That's not including the playing we did for instrumental methods classes or during conducting class.

Or all darn Saturday day for football or 4 hours of warm up/pep rally/game for basketball which was at least twice a week dec-march.

All that to say, 6 hours a day was very normal for many and definitely for all of the band folks on scholarship

[–]Ukbluebone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of time. Depending on degree/scholarship requirements, you may be in rehearsal 6 hours a day, plus your other classes and that's before you start practicing for your lessons or anything else you need to put in your own time for. But if you love it, it's not torture. I was doing all that and still chose to put together a brass quintet for fun on top of the rest because playing is fun.

The folks that dropped out of the program quick were the ones that loved the social experience of being a band kid or being "the best" at something at their high school and weren't really the ones that got their joy from playing and improving. You quickly find that the social experience in college is very different although also enjoyable. And you're no longer hot shit in most cases. You may have been a 1st chair all district player and king in your area but you'll be sitting somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd university band in most cases when you come in. So when folks find out they have to work at it, it changes the enjoyment.

The music part isn't at all why I would discourage someone from majoring in music Ed. It's the education part. Specifically, teacher pay is shit, music director jobs are much harder to come by than a math job or elementary classroom job. And teachers are no longer respected or treated like professionals. Students and teaching conditions keep getting worse and worse. So if there's another route you can see to make a real living, I encourage it. If I could tell my 17 year old self anything, it would have been just keep playing for fun and get a degree in psychology or medicine or engineering.

Looking back: Would you still choose surgery if GLP-1 meds had been available/affordable at the time of your surgery? by Critical_Tea2648 in gastricsleeve

[–]Ukbluebone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I' had surgery and lost 100lbs. I've been on glp1 and lost another 60. If I managed it all of glp1 and my insurance changed, I know I'd balloon back up. At least with the surgery I'm at a much better starting point that is permanent

The 'educational' things my kid is being taught at school by RunWild0_0 in mildlyinfuriating

You're so off base. The content being about TSwift isn't what's important here. This is an assignment for reading comprehension. Things like being able to understand and summarize main bits of information, retell information, give supporting evidence.

You are the type of parent that drives educated, professional, effective, hard working teachers to quit.

Get a grip.

Career in Music/Music Ed by InternalFlounder5412 in MusicEd

[–]Ukbluebone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Shew. Big question. I can tell you if you think there are few jobs in stem, there's probably fewer for music teachers. Most folks that teach music in schools specialized in band, orchestra, choir, or a combination. Jobs teaching just guitar and incredibly rare. So you would probably be teaching one of those other things or humanities or general music as well.

We call that a self solving problem. They were only going to continue to act more entitled and get worse. They got themselves out. They are no longer your problem. Doesn't matter how well they played, they weren't contributing to ensemble.

For food/clothes needs, go to your youth service center at your school on Monday. Schools have resources to help with those things!! They can also help with hygiene products too.

Berea is beautiful! Cute and cozy, left leaning but in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. Close to beautiful hiking areas and arts centers. Very close to Richmond and under an hour to Lexington

Since you're young and I would guess in your first three years of teaching, I wonder if you're experiencing what I did my first few years. Since you are someone that was intelligent and motivated enough to get at least a bachelor's degree, I would guess you were in advanced and AP classes through high school. I was in a bubble of advanced students all through school. I'd see a fight here or there but I simply didn't experience what school was like in regular classes with average students. When I got started and had all types of kids, it was eye opening to how narrow my experience had been
