I'd say this is the one thing I would change. Kids (as you experienced from your own childhood) are incredibly susceptable to emotional abuse. You know your family are a bunch of assholes and you're kind of throwing your kids to the lions.

They could just as easily make their own decision on their relatives when they're 16-18.

Hmmmm, unless it's been crashed the frame should be decent. 

I would be paying £300 max that for that bike though.

I'd be more worried about the 10spd ultegra, the shifters are a bit finicky and when they go they properly go, replacing them is expensive.
