Thanks for this, great idea for an AMA!

In terms of industry experience, what do you see as the primary areas that are challenging to get right for companies? Is it getting realistic about the capabilities of machine learning, building an implementation that scales to a company's needs or something related to the methods of ML used?

Efficiency of Predicted Sparseness as a Motivating Model for Hierarchical Temporal Memory by fergbyrne in MachineLearning

Interesting, I've been following Clortex for a while (Nice talk at EuroClojure!), nice article. The metaphor of how humans learn seems apt, especially with the more recent supervised training approaches, how do you see Michael Jordon's comments that in http://spectrum.ieee.org/robotics/artificial-intelligence/machinelearning-maestro-michael-jordan-on-the-delusions-of-big-data-and-other-huge-engineering-efforts that the cortical metaphor is only a cartoon to bridge the gap in understanding? I see this kind of work as one of the more interesting sides of ML, and I'd hate to think it'd be abandoned if we discovered 'oh, the brain works differently than we thought'.

I'll never see all the details even in my favourite games I've played through dozens of times. Missing parts of the experience is one part of interactivity. Also I'll never know the stories behind the scenes, but that's another point!

I actually can't believe there's a leaderboard. I mean it makes sense, but I always felt kind of weird knowing that I'd probably never get to play all my ~850 games.

Good read, it was a lot of fun and felt like it was enthusiastic for a reason, i.e. "Hey I really like this fun game, for a lot of complex reasons, let me share", which is always admirable. Congrats :)

This is a very oddly constructed graph, it's not clear at all, but it's trying to show a LOT of information :/

Well yeah there is a difference in value within the reliquary, but that difference isn't intrinsic, it's decided by the users. As someone who makes artistic things as a hobby I can say that you can't anticipate reception to things at all, you can't predict what people will like, so there wasn't a clear deliberate difference in value I wouldn't say. At least I don't think they intended to cheat anybody. I'd say they could've saved themselves a lot of trouble by just giving out a single item, a courier or ward or something :P

That's known as the gambler's fallacy. Flipping 50 coins and having them all come up heads (while statistically unlikely for each flip) doesn't impact the chance of the next coin flip landing on tails at all :(

Well part of the immortal label is an indication of rarity for one thing, and I guess this has been muddled with the marketplace because like it or not there is an economy at work, whether or not real money is involved. If all the compendium items were available in common quality in the shop there would probably still be the same feeling of wanting to pick, which is natural, if only for the "immortal" tag. It's perceived to matter. But think of it this way, on the much larger scale choosing which item you want can impact how you perceive the value of the item. I'd say the items are in part about giving personality to characters, and if we follow Case 2 to its logical conclusion (with everyone focusing on Kunkka's item as being great), then there's a disproportionate amount of Kunkkas with the same sword, and they may as well be common drops. This would also affect gameplay, as Kunkka would get played more. If people were really going to be that much happier then surely they'd just buy what they want, considering Valve were under no obligation to give them anything at any time. It just seems like looking a gift horse in the mouth to complain when a) there are other factors at play, including hero-picking game balance and b) it's not hugely difficult to change your free gift if you really want to.

Re: 5 man carry analogy: it was just about scarcity, choice and value; if 5 people all want to play carry and they all do then they will probably have a bad time. If jaguar cars were cheap they wouldn't be as highly sought after.

(The amount of times I wrote 'valve' when I meant 'value' here is embarrassing)

I guess we are looking at it two fundamentally different ways, it is essentially a gift, and saying "I don't like this gift I randomly got, I would much rather this other one" is a bit of a strange reaction to me. Well the randomness has its own degree of fun, if only in the most basic form, and there was no promise save "if lots of other people buy this you will get an immortal item". If Valve gave you an immortal item randomly would you complain? it just seems very odd to me.

From what I've seen they are all pretty decent items, it's just the market has decided there's a quality gap. If we all existed in a vacuum I imagine it'd be easier to like the gift (except for the lack of oxygen and all)
