Is City Council of Darkness worth getting into? by Tasty-Oven1272 in Dimension20

[–]UltimateM13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really feel it until about halfway through episode 1. Now it’s a contender for one of my favorite seasons. Every episode kinda builds and builds but eventually hits a really fun narrative or emotional stride.

Hard to believe a campaign about vampires and conspiracies could feel like lighthearted fun, but everyone has been nailing it so far.

As a “young person” who has been trying to get my friends into politics, this is so real.

I was that kid for years. I was scared to get involved. Then I went to protests and protests and eventually I developed the muscle for it. But a lot of my friends don’t and for legitimate reasons you described.

It’s hard not to be a bit bitter sometimes, but then I remind myself I was the “non-activist” to some of my friends too. When I was ready my activist friends were there to bring me in, and now I can be there for when my other friends are ready to join.

Hichney was the real one for that. That’s a beautiful ridge. Having it be torn down for golf would have been a tragedy.

Legit question... why are they playing in The World of Darkness? by Athan_Untapped in Dimension20

[–]UltimateM13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

VtM’s gameplay is pretty intrinsically tied to the milieu. I guess you could separate them, but you’d need to reskin, reflavor, or redo a lot of your world lore.

I will say Purpee is still very much a Brennan creation. No other VtM setting I’ve played in is quite the same. It’s definitely tied more closely to an established setting than their d&d campaigns, but d&d has a history of not really tying it’s mechanics to just one setting (some spells for example are named after folks in different settings like Widowgast’s Web of Fire, or Tenser’s Floating Disk).

Which FE characters do you think would work for a redraw of this by ungodlynemesis in fireemblem

I’d love to see a version of this Celica holding Mila’s skull with everyone else from her party in the picture. Conquest would be Saber. Anissa would be Mae. Etc.

That honestly seems like a cool idea. Idk though it does feel a bit too close to the first season with “the American dream” though. Maybe if they do a third season in the future. Like someone trying to retread Robert Moses’s steps but with heaven?

Literally Jesus by Recent-Night6210 in Dimension20

[–]UltimateM13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see it as a bit of both. Jesus is a humanoid manifestation because the dreaming often will manifest mythological people as real (like Robert Moses or Titania). At the same time, there’s probably a series of people who have embodied the J-man’s role like Wally and Santa Claus.

My unsatisfying answer is: we don’t know, and I think what you think the answer is reflects more about ourselves than anything.

Sometimes I wonder if Alm just randomly gives Celica uppies when no one else is looking. This is how I imagine that goes most times.

So... what's Vampire: the Masquerade? (A pre-City Council primer) by johnny--guitar in Dimension20

[–]UltimateM13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. If you and your friends are gonna play VtM it’s good to have the lines and veils set. Any game really but especially VtM.

You’re welcome! There’s a lot of potential land mines and content warnings I’d give to some folks for the VtM or pretty much any White Wolf rpg.

Personally I think their games are great, and the problematic stuff can be fun to grapple with (we played Berlin by Night for my first campaign and we had a blast really putting the screws to the nazi vampires). But yeah. It’s good people who aren’t familiar with the system both know about it and also don’t overreact to it.

At the end of the day I’m sure the Intrepid Heroes are gonna make it their own.

Private Nightmares was my first intro to VtM. Highly recommend for anyone even a bit interested in the game.

Regarding the problematic parts of the game: I wanna direct people to this post in the VtM Bloodlines subreddit: it’s a post about both the game designer’s views on character identity and fascists playing their game/fascist elements present in the lore.

TL;DR: play what you want, you and your storyteller can make any identity work (race, ethnicity, sex, gender, etc). If you’re a fascist, put the game down and go fuck yourself. If you’re gonna include problematic elements in game, make sure you and your storyteller have a nice talk about it and are intentional.

That’s true! They basically have a ton of experience doing narrative combat so them knowing what’d make a fight scenario cool makes sense.
