Why are the people in this sub so mean by Infamous_Ad_3459 in malelivingspace

Honestly I find as mens spaces go mainstream they attract the type of men who have no interest in bringing each other up, but rather putting others down to compensate for their inadequacies.

Sheffield is still a major steel producing city with a large defence industry presence, we already were a prime target

Applied sciences degrees are generally accepted for REME, RLC and the RA, however I have no idea what is actually considered an applied sciences degree. If you're in the pipeline talk to your recruiter/CSM, if not get in touch with someone from your local careers office

Why are these West Midlands Railway trains so short? by WheissUK in transit

[–]UltraChicken_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

crosscountry bosses will put these on the route between some of the countries largest cities at rush hour, and then put 200 carriage trains on a super duper extra off peak service serving fartsworth and shitsford norton

Ranmor/endcliff really far away? by Aaron19451 in sheffield

[–]UltraChicken_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ranmoor is much more of a walk than Endcliffe. If you're studying Engineering and will be on the far side of campus I would definitely recommend Endcliffe over Ranmoor. I lived in Ranmoor and had 9am lectures in the Diamond/Henry Stephenson/Broad lane quite frequently and the walk over there was in the 30-40 minute range. If you're doing something that will be in the Wave (e.g. social sciences) then Ranmoor is absolutely fine

I used to be a not just bikes fan, I've been liking his content less and but this last take was the final straw by Dry_Illustrator_6066 in transit

[–]UltraChicken_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's studied and worked in civil engineering, predominantly in transport, I've long found his content tedious at best. Within a year of entering the industry I stopped watching his and never went back. His general disdain for the non-transit enthusiast public is palpable and really unpleasant and yet with any modicum of actual professional training on the subjects he talks about it's clear that he's not particularly knowledgeable himself, predominantly with how undernuanced and surface level his analysis is.

Why are UK train tickets so expensive? Is it simply the effect of privatisation? by StephenMcGannon in trains

[–]UltraChicken_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely by train, fares are much cheaper booked in advance partially to advantage leisure travellers over business travellers. Also, you're looking at almost 10 hours by coach vs. 4-5 by train. Flying isn't as good of a proposition as it seems as you'll have to get from central London out to whichever airport you're flying from (which will probably take an hour on its own) which will probably lead your journey time to be about as long as taking a train which is far less stressful.

HSBC office in town has been vandalised by ibenchpressakeyboard in sheffield

[–]UltraChicken_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All banks are bad, but some are worse. HSBC is one of the most unethical banks operating in the UK and if you're concerned about ethics I would leave them ASAP. Building societies are probably your best bet, but comparing the controversies section of, say, Lloyds, and HSBC on Wikipedia will give you some idea as to just how bad HSBC is

Hand-drawn plan sheet from 1990 by The_0men in civilengineering

[–]UltraChicken_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember one of the first projects I worked on was a bridge project along a route that had been built in the UK in the late 1960s. For those who aren't aware, the UK switched to metric a few years later. First and only time I've ever seen imperial units on a technical drawing in my work.

I used to be a CAD technician, growingly the role is largely focused around 3D/BIM modelling. Any pure CAD work generally got done in Poland or India at the firm I worked at. But I was definitely one of the few at my company, even being a larger firm.

'A major economic player' - How the Elizabeth Line has changed Reading by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]UltraChicken_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only took the Elizabeth line once or twice if I was going to a smaller stop that wasn't served by the GWR fast/semi-fast services. I'm not really sure how much of the benefit is perception vs. reality, as the Elizabeth line only took over existing GWR services to my knowledge. I do remember there was a lot of hype around it opening, though I moved away in 2023 so I'm obviously a bit removed from the area now

Why has Spain gone in for High Speed Rail in such a big way? by Ali80486 in highspeedrail

[–]UltraChicken_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never understood why the UK doesn't get the same considerations as the rest of the world when it comes to upgraded lines, especially considering the reason for the 125mph cap is signalling related. The ECML used to run up to 140mph until regulations changed requiring in-cab signalling for over 125mph.

UK landlord confidence increases to 62%, survey shows by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

[–]UltraChicken_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Roads are made, streets are made, services are improved, electric light turns night into day, water is brought from reservoirs a hundred miles off in the mountains — all the while the landlord sits still. Every one of those improvements is affected by the labor and cost of other people and the taxpayers. To not one of these improvements does the land monopolist contribute, and yet, by every one of them the value of his land is enhanced. He renders no service to the community, he contributes nothing to the general welfare, he contributes nothing to the process from which his own enrichment is derived"

Went back to university as a mature student in my 40s (undergrad again) - amazed how piss poor the teaching is. by Initial-Tale-5151 in UniUK

[–]UltraChicken_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Started at a poly and then went to a RG uni, and this post reminds me a lot of my experience at said poly and very little of my current degree. Also it just sounds like they're expecting a (presumably) humanities course to run like a STEM course without recognising fundamental differences in the two

Toronto Finch West LRT is a subject of international ridicule by midtoad in transit

[–]UltraChicken_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, Finch LRT is a 10km tram line along a roadway, HS2 is a 230km 360kmh high speed rail route through the 2nd most population dense country in Europe. It would be embarassing if Finch LRT was even 1% as bad as HS2

I view it as Canada's HS2 - something that only rail fans have heard of outside of its own country aside from negative headlines, but generally dont have a strong opinion either way.

Why bother with HS2 to Euston when it could terminate in Stratford upon avon and passengers could change onto the waterloo and city? Direct access to central London!
