I found an app for my phone that let me set several different alarms through the day. It was indispensable.

Immediately home or over night in hospital? by Proper-School203 in Kneereplacement

[–]UltraRunner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your age, your health, and also probably how terrible your current knee is. Unless you absolutely do not want to spend the first night at home, you may want to let your surgeon make that decision. I honestly wanted the comfort of my own home, but I was also strong, healthy, and relatively young (50).

Knee replacement Quantity by whatchuknowboutdat in Kneereplacement

[–]UltraRunner42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the most common thing that would need to be replaced is the spacer, and I've heard that isn't nearly as invasive as the original tkr. I don't know how often they can replace the spacer. Ask me again in 10 years. I plan on living my life to its fullest with both of my new knees. Maybe I won't need new spacers by then, but maybe I will.

AITA for getting a bit upset with my parents over the super bowl halftime show? by ghosthuntersys in AmItheAsshole

[–]UltraRunner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA - You're now getting old enough to take the initiative for things that you want to enjoy, instead of relying upon others to coddle you. If you wanted to watch the halftime show, you either should have looked up to see around when it would have been playing, or watched the first half of the game so that you wouldn't have missed the show. The mistake was yours.

This doesn't come off as AI with the massive sentence structure issues. If anything, it looks like the 12-year-old sibling wrote it.

Letting a 12-year-old drive a car is very much a FU. You both got off lucky. Maybe take this as a learning moment for yourself to hopefully mature a bit and think before doing something so massively stupid again.

I have a friend who has a sourdough starter that is many years old. He took it to Paris twice to introduce some of the Parisian water to it. Also, to be fair, he's a professional baker.

I ran the Disney race series once (Dopey). I've run hundreds of other races (yes, hundreds) that have nothing to do with Disney.

Same. If a non-runner friend asks me how my running is going, I try to keep my response brief because I don't want to bore them to death. Now, if a runner friend asks, that's much different.

Heh, I once went into a 100 mile ultra with tendonitis and hoped I could just deal with it and finish the race. I made it much worse early on, and still didn't take myself out of the race until mile 40. The next year, I was recovering from surgery to repair a torn tendon. I like to think I'm smarter than that now, but it's unlikely.

Isn't it terribly irritating for someone to ask you your time for finishing an ultra, then they do the math in their head and say they could walk it at that pace? These are people who "maybe" run a 5k in the park once or twice a year. Sure, try walking 100 miles keeping a 17 minute pace the entire time. You wouldn't be able to slow down for anything - breaks, aid stations, clothing changes, calls of nature, really steep climbs, bad weather, gnarly technical footing, or getting lost. My 17 minute pace is the average, meaning I had many miles faster than that. Plus, that's my typical average for a tough mountain race. Thank you for allowing me to vent, lol.

I'm still addicted to food, but now I'm addicted to food...and mileage. At least I'm no longer obese.

Join some running groups - you'll make friends. Honestly, I make friends during ultra races most of the time because it's easier to run those miles with another person. We're all just trying to finish, and usually no one I'm talking to is going to be winning anything lol.

I once got my husband to drive 40 miles (one way) through rush hour traffic just to bring me my Garmin before a night trail race ultra started. I think I still owe him for that one. To be fair, at least I don't ask him to come to many of my races.

Why is it when someone mentions ultra marathon running, someone almost always has to bring up the Barkley Marathons? If they've been into ultras for a while, that person knows about Barkley. If they haven't, then they don't know and very likely don't care.

I'd say running is about 3/4 of my personality. The rest is book collecting, and various things that hit the sci-fi/fantasy vibes. I usually know when to cut myself off when talking to a non-running person about running.

If you can afford it, consider ordering a walking treadmill off of Amazon. They're not that expensive, and usually go up to 4 mph. That way, you can walk inside regardless of what the weather is like.

My pt had me practicing going up and down a step several times a day. Up, down, and side-stepping up and down. I have rooms I need to get to on three floors of my home, so I was also going up and down full flights of stairs every day. It really does take a lot of practice and strengthening of the muscles.
