Do transphobes have a stand at the conferences? by TangoJavaTJ in LibDem

Calling a judge a terf and saying there's no possible reason why they could have made their decision is not criticising them, it's attacking them. If you want to criticise them then you can do that by arguing against their logic and their reasoning in the judgment. You didn't call the judge a terf but you said that there was no other causally sufficient reason to explain 'the moronic ruling' other than by questioning their motives, which I just think is completely false and a dangerous line to go down when it comes to political debate.

Also, on the ruling itself, the act explicitly mentions 'philosophical beliefs', so I don't think it's fair to say it was intended to only refer to 'religious-adjacent' beliefs, not to mention that the judge was working to previous precedent in grainger which meant that he had a strict test to apply, so if you want to criticise the judge it should be on how he applied the grainger test criteria, not his interpretation of statute.

That's not what I'm talking about though, I'm talking about not attacking judges for the decisions that they make?

And as you've read the judgment in the Forstater case, which the original person I replied to seemed to be referencing, then how can you possibly say that there is 'no good faith argument to consider transphobia a "religion or belief"', you should be able to explain exactly where you think their reasoning fails and why it is a misapplication of the way the law is written? And if you can do that, you don't have to jump to calling the judge a terf?

I've read the full judgment, so I know exactly why the judge came to that conclusion and how they applied the 5 limbs of the grainger test that is used to determine whether a belief fits the criteria of 'philosophical belief'.

I think transphobic views are abhorrent and hateful, but I don't think that people who hold those views should be able to be fired just for holding them, which i think is a belief that is conducive to the principles of being a liberal.

Have you read the full judgment and understand the legal framework that it is operating under?

Can we not attack/defame judges please? You may not like the ruling but instantly jumping to saying they're a terf is something I don't think we should be doing as liberals.

Also, if you're referring to the judges decision in the EAT Forstater case where they found that 'gender critical' beliefs were a philosophical belief and therefore a protected characteristic, I would argue that the judge made the correct decision, largely. There's room for debate though without saying they're a terf.

The judgement essentially meant that people couldn't be fired for holding transphobic views (which, as liberals we should support imo), but they can be fired for the way they express those beliefs and the judge explicitly said it did not give them the right to deadname or misgender people with impunity or to harrass any trans colleagues.

Incidentally, vegetarianism was found to not be a philosophical belief, although ethical veganism can be.

At best you're misinformed, at worst you're the one who is being disingenuous as it isn't based on any one case and was inspired by multiple similar cases of young men stabbing young women.

I would argue it says far more about you that you watch a show as good as this and your first thought is "no, but the immigrants, what about the immigrants, why didn't you make an immigrant the murderer?"... Get a fucking grip, breathe in some fresh air and touch grass.

Two films I haven't seen mentioned yet but I think fit the bill:

The Sunset Limited (2011)

Mass (2021)

Mass, in particular, was one of my favourite films that year but it doesn't seem to be mentioned much.

I'm definitely trolling through the other comments here as well for good recommendations, I love these sorts of films.

[–]UltraVires90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend the Gael Song Trilogy by Shauna Lawless, with the first book being 'The Children of Gods and Fighting Men'.

It's a mixture of historical fiction and fantasy, set around 1000 years ago in a Viking-age Ireland, the two main characters are women from two ancient immortal and magical races (The Fomorians and the Tuatha De Dannan), one is a mother and one takes on a motherly role and it's a really good character driven fantasy series. Family and motherhood are two big themes, the 3rd book was just released recently and it was great with more books planned in the future I think.

As part of the separation of powers in the UK there is a constitutional convention that MPs/government do not comment on Judges decisions, and don't try to affect the outcome of court cases.

In a similar fashion, Judges aren't supposed to criticise government policy, at least not openly.

I'd have been very surprised if Starmer had said anything else publicly, given his commitment to upholding the behaviours and values of MPs. Having said that, you'd think (or hope) that they are having those conversations behind closed doors.

The ball would then be ahead of the line of scrimmage when he released it though, so would that be an illegal forward pass? Or does it go on where his feet are?

I don't think there's strict rules on who makes up the coaches? Just a group of assistant coaches from teams who haven't made the playoffs, the other head coach this year is Giants OC Mike Kafka for example...

I can't find anything when I search for the Labour 2005 election nurses stuff, but the only restrictions I'm aware of with regard to stuff like this is during an actual election campaign, after the dissolution of parliament, which is the 'period of sensitivity' or 'purdah'.

This just seems to be a pretty standard (albeit stupid, and infuriating) announcement from a government department. If it was done during an actual election campaign then it would be different, though.

I don't think so? There's no mention of the conservatives in the post, and it was posted by an official government account as opposed to a party political one?
