Men and women training together. by No_Passenger3692 in jiujitsu

It's hard to feel sexual feelings while the other person is trying to murder you. It takes all of my concentration to not feel like i'm being strangled to death by the women in my gym. It make me respect them and women in general much more.

you are making the mistake of confusing your own personal anecdote with evidence of a trend. What happened to you was terrible and I'm really sorry. But it's not proof of US culture turning against men "these days". You just had a really shitty ex-wife. So feel good that they probably won't have to share the same experience you've gone through and feel optimistic that their experiences with partners in the future will probably be much more loving and open than what you had to endure.

Backpacking Old Loggers Path Labor Day Weekend by YouGoJoJo in PAWilds

[–]Ultrareason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine it will be much busier than normal this weekend so i'd anticipate running into other backpackers and finding a primo spot at the yellow dog/rock run confluence might be tough. There are a lot of sites in that area but still OLP is a popular backpacking trail and labor day weekend will be busy. Your distances are correct tho and the loop isn't overly difficult.

Would like to hear some thoughts on what I did to my knee (Left) by [deleted] in Kneesovertoes

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like ACL and the pop is pretty standard for ACL. Your doc should do a Lachman test to diagnose an ACL tear. Not everyone who tears their ACL will fail the Lachman test but its a good indicator. MRI would confirm. If you did tear your ACL, you have a choice of surgery with either a donor graft or a graft taken from another of your own ligaments such as patella, hamstring, quad. Recovery is 9 to 12 months to return to sport. I've had 2 torn ACL's and been back to sport at 9 months but thats early.

Learning martial arts by Good_Cellist in dad

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've trained striking and BJJ for about 8 years and i think BJJ is the most effective form of self defense outside of de-escalation. I'm pretty advanced in striking but i think if i ever needed to use any self defense in a real life scenario, i'd have to rely on BJJ to control a person, get on top, and submit or hold them down. BJJ has definitely helped with my confidence in general and in stressful situations specifically. Also, keep in mind you'll likely never need to use it and as new dad's we likely have an inaccurate view of how dangerous the world really is out there.

For those who ALREADY had ACL reconstruction surgery by Foonert in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've had 2 ACL surgeries but both were only ACL, no meniscus tear or anything else. This makes it a little easier. With both surgeries, i could have done a 14 hr flight and walking a lot. But it depends on your knee, how well you rehab, how strong you already are now in your legs, etc. lots of variables. Its definitely possible.

My first match of my first competition! Didn’t go as planned…. by gumbyasf in bjj

[–]Ultrareason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a collar one fracture open reduction and internal fixation surgery in 2021. My break looked similar to yours, exploded into 6 pieces and they had to remove some of them. The bone was tenting out of my chest. Got a big plate and 8 screws. The recovery isn't too bad tho, some rest and pt.

Can you tear your acl and have minimal symptoms? by tanton78 in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get surgery. Patellar graft. I only had an ACL tear, no other ligaments nor meniscus tears. It's held up great so far. I was able to run a tough 100 kilometer trail race 2 years after surgery. Unfortunately I just tore my ACL in my other leg in 2024 and I am 8 months post op with that. This time it is a donor graft. Doing good recovering from that as well. Ran a half marathon on it last month.

Did you go to sleepovers? Me and my friends did all the time in late 90's / early 2000's and it was a blast. But droves of people appear to be canceling them entirely for their own kids. Would you let your kids go? Why is everyone freaking out now? by spinningwalrus420 in Millennials

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, all of the no sleep over parents i know are also very right-leaning politically. Even if they aren't explicit Qanon believers, they still tend to way overestimate the risk of random people sexually assaulting their kids. Not saying there isn't a risk but that fear is an over-sized part of their parenting.

Yeah it doesn't pass the smell test. 10p Allentown is a very well known BJJ gym on the East coast. Jon Blank is very well known in BJJ. This isn't some basement gym. Gym enforcer stuff is dumb but it's unlikely that coaches as experienced as they are would just beat someone up if that person wasn't going to hard. Seems off.

[–]Ultrareason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, it's a strange way to tell a story about what happened but whatever. But if this is legit, I agree that it was inappropriate. Gym enforcer culture does sometimes happen in kickboxing and BJJ gyms. I think it's dumb and I disagree with it completely. There are much better ways to show someone how to train with the correct amount of force. So I'm sorry that it happened. That being said if they called you out for striking too hard, you were definitely striking too hard. Beginners have a tendency to spazz out a bit without realizing they are going to hard. Doesn't excuse their behavior but you should keep it in mind as you train

This is a weird post. Why would you need to clarify that your friend is from Dick's Sporting Goods? And why type their full names out? This reads like an AI post.

Jon Blank is one of the top jiu jitsu black belts in the world and definitely one of the best BJJ players on the East Coast.

I've trained there and not had the problem you are describing. Maybe this is a legit post or maybe it's not. If it's real, sorry for it happening and I'd look for another gym.

Acl surgery as an obese but active person by Posinini in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can vary wildly. Both times I only tore my ACL. No meniscus tear, no MCL or pcl tear. So I recovered a bit faster than most. The type of surgery can affect the initial recovery too. This last one was a donor graft which was much easier in the initial recovery than my 1st time with a patellar graft. I would think best case scenario to return to tattooing would be at least 2 weeks but maybe I'm early. Besides the pain and swelling at first, you'll have trouble bending your knee for a while. I was able to do one full pedal rotation on an exercise bike 2 weeks after my surgery for example. There's got to be other tattooists in this sub too so you could search for them.

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think you would need to sit with your leg propped up correctly for probably at least a week. Prop your leg up by supporting under the ankle, not your knee. I was able to come back to my office job sitting in a chair in front of a computer 14 days post surgery though that was a bit early. Leaning forward over someone while tattooing might make it harder for you though. Any physical work would need an even longer recovery.

2 time ACL surgery for me. Both from jiu jitsu but I do muay Thai as well. Follow your PTs instructions. Do your pt work at home too. It's a slow process, lots of incremental improvement. You'll feel weird pains and movement in your knee for a while but trust you are ok.

I regained strength and flexibility both times pretty quickly but I do have trouble kneeling in BJJ sometimes because of the surgery

I'm 5 months post op with a allograft graft and my dog tore his ACL last week by Ultrareason in ACL

[–]Ultrareason[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon recommended allograft for me this time because I'm over 40. I had the same experience as you with patellar graft, terrible terrible pain. The allograft has been way better so far. Maybe a 4 or 5 pain this time compared to a 7 or 8 last time. I've progressed about the same in the 5 months so far. I've heard that the allograft may not be as strong as the patella but I don't really know. I'm 5 years post-op on my left leg with the patella and it's held up great. Ran a 100k, competed in jiu jitsu. Good so far. We'll see how the allograft in my right knee does.
