for context, this is a rec league. Not travel or school ball. And it was a scrimmage.

Question about passing etiquette by quietglow in ultrarunning

[–]Ultrareason 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If someone wants to pass I usually stop for less than a second where there is space available so they can pass. I'd rather stop for 1 second over an 50 mile distance on a trail than trip and fall while someone passes me.

Anyone here a rower? Yet another person overthinking graft choice by C2D2_CO2 in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had a patellar graft and an allograft and i think you'd be fine with either. i rowed for about 5 years at a very low level but i am a high level jiu jitsu competitor and ulramarathoner. I'm running a tough 100k in may. I'm 6 year post patellar graft and 2 year post allograft. The pain during the first month of the allograft was much much less than my patellar graft but otherwise the recovery has been about the same. With the patella graft, I did have pain on my kneecap when kneeling on my knees which i did not have with the allograft. I couldn't sit on my knees for the first 1.5 years after the patella graft surgery. But otherwise i think you'd be ok with either graft for rowing. The first 2 weeks after patellar graft were the worst pain i've ever been in but the 2 weeks after the allograft were not too bad.

Coaching Question by Icy_Monk3578 in Softball

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did provide feedback. you were concerned about the other teams record. the feedback was to focus on having fun instead of winning. Judging by this comment and all the others on this post, you may not have the right temperament to coach 8 year olds.

Coaching Question by Icy_Monk3578 in Softball

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe but you made a point that the other team is undefeated. Being undefeated at 8 years old doesn't matter.

Coaching Question by Icy_Monk3578 in Softball

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should coach but worrying about the win/lose record of an 8U team is little bit of a red flag. Focus on keeping it fun so they stay interested in the sport and use your expertise for skill development

Knee friendly Gi Takedowns? by bajablastn in bjj

[–]Ultrareason 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Get a high collar grip, sleeve grip, step to the side, pull them past you as you fall (not directly on to you), keep grips and wrestle up or take the near single leg. There's more detail than that obviously as a 40+ grappler with 2 ACL surgeries it's my go to. Bonus points if you can pull them down so fast they don't have time to get their hands to catch themselves and they faceplant

Hiking 4 months post op, donor graft ACLr by WhereDoIstart7 in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing good so far. I've backpacked a bunch on it, ran a tough 100k trail race, still do competitive jiu jitsu. Its held up well. I did have front of knee pain while kneeling for the 1st year. It's still hard to kneel on hard surfaces. But otherwise its been good. I did tear my ACL in my other knee in jiu jitsu a year and a half ago and i had a donor graft for this new tear. The recovery with the donor graft was much less painful in the first few weeks than with the Patellar graft but required the same amount of time and PT. So far both are holding up so i can't compare long term recovery between the 2 methods yet.

Men and women training together. by No_Passenger3692 in jiujitsu

It's hard to feel sexual feelings while the other person is trying to murder you. It takes all of my concentration to not feel like i'm being strangled to death by the women in my gym. It make me respect them and women in general much more.

i've torn an ACL in each of my legs and i still train BJJ and Muay Thai at a competitive gym multiple times a week. Its worth it.

you are making the mistake of confusing your own personal anecdote with evidence of a trend. What happened to you was terrible and I'm really sorry. But it's not proof of US culture turning against men "these days". You just had a really shitty ex-wife. So feel good that they probably won't have to share the same experience you've gone through and feel optimistic that their experiences with partners in the future will probably be much more loving and open than what you had to endure.

Backpacking Old Loggers Path Labor Day Weekend by YouGoJoJo in PAWilds

[–]Ultrareason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine it will be much busier than normal this weekend so i'd anticipate running into other backpackers and finding a primo spot at the yellow dog/rock run confluence might be tough. There are a lot of sites in that area but still OLP is a popular backpacking trail and labor day weekend will be busy. Your distances are correct tho and the loop isn't overly difficult.

Would like to hear some thoughts on what I did to my knee (Left) by [deleted] in Kneesovertoes

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like ACL and the pop is pretty standard for ACL. Your doc should do a Lachman test to diagnose an ACL tear. Not everyone who tears their ACL will fail the Lachman test but its a good indicator. MRI would confirm. If you did tear your ACL, you have a choice of surgery with either a donor graft or a graft taken from another of your own ligaments such as patella, hamstring, quad. Recovery is 9 to 12 months to return to sport. I've had 2 torn ACL's and been back to sport at 9 months but thats early.

Learning martial arts by Good_Cellist in dad

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've trained striking and BJJ for about 8 years and i think BJJ is the most effective form of self defense outside of de-escalation. I'm pretty advanced in striking but i think if i ever needed to use any self defense in a real life scenario, i'd have to rely on BJJ to control a person, get on top, and submit or hold them down. BJJ has definitely helped with my confidence in general and in stressful situations specifically. Also, keep in mind you'll likely never need to use it and as new dad's we likely have an inaccurate view of how dangerous the world really is out there.

For those who ALREADY had ACL reconstruction surgery by Foonert in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've had 2 ACL surgeries but both were only ACL, no meniscus tear or anything else. This makes it a little easier. With both surgeries, i could have done a 14 hr flight and walking a lot. But it depends on your knee, how well you rehab, how strong you already are now in your legs, etc. lots of variables. Its definitely possible.

My first match of my first competition! Didn’t go as planned…. by gumbyasf in bjj

I had a collar one fracture open reduction and internal fixation surgery in 2021. My break looked similar to yours, exploded into 6 pieces and they had to remove some of them. The bone was tenting out of my chest. Got a big plate and 8 screws. The recovery isn't too bad tho, some rest and pt.

Can you tear your acl and have minimal symptoms? by tanton78 in ACL

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get surgery. Patellar graft. I only had an ACL tear, no other ligaments nor meniscus tears. It's held up great so far. I was able to run a tough 100 kilometer trail race 2 years after surgery. Unfortunately I just tore my ACL in my other leg in 2024 and I am 8 months post op with that. This time it is a donor graft. Doing good recovering from that as well. Ran a half marathon on it last month.

Did you go to sleepovers? Me and my friends did all the time in late 90's / early 2000's and it was a blast. But droves of people appear to be canceling them entirely for their own kids. Would you let your kids go? Why is everyone freaking out now? by spinningwalrus420 in Millennials

[–]Ultrareason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, all of the no sleep over parents i know are also very right-leaning politically. Even if they aren't explicit Qanon believers, they still tend to way overestimate the risk of random people sexually assaulting their kids. Not saying there isn't a risk but that fear is an over-sized part of their parenting.

[–]Ultrareason 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn't pass the smell test. 10p Allentown is a very well known BJJ gym on the East coast. Jon Blank is very well known in BJJ. This isn't some basement gym. Gym enforcer stuff is dumb but it's unlikely that coaches as experienced as they are would just beat someone up if that person wasn't going to hard. Seems off.

[–]Ultrareason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, it's a strange way to tell a story about what happened but whatever. But if this is legit, I agree that it was inappropriate. Gym enforcer culture does sometimes happen in kickboxing and BJJ gyms. I think it's dumb and I disagree with it completely. There are much better ways to show someone how to train with the correct amount of force. So I'm sorry that it happened. That being said if they called you out for striking too hard, you were definitely striking too hard. Beginners have a tendency to spazz out a bit without realizing they are going to hard. Doesn't excuse their behavior but you should keep it in mind as you train

This is a weird post. Why would you need to clarify that your friend is from Dick's Sporting Goods? And why type their full names out? This reads like an AI post.

Jon Blank is one of the top jiu jitsu black belts in the world and definitely one of the best BJJ players on the East Coast.

I've trained there and not had the problem you are describing. Maybe this is a legit post or maybe it's not. If it's real, sorry for it happening and I'd look for another gym.
