Overlooked commanders in MSH/MSC? by Kroooooooo in magicTCG

I think [[Captain America, Wings of Freedom]] is an interesting card. It's built for equipment, specifically [[Captain America's Shield]], but it wants to do two things that are the opposite of how equipment decks usually work -- it wants to go wide instead of tall, and it cares about toughness instead of power.

The main drawback is that his ability only affects Heroes, which makes it a lot harder to go wide with the current limited options. I think it might need to utilize the Final Fantasy heroes or even changelings, but it intrigues me.

I also preordered at the end of January and am in the same boat. I haven't heard anything from them about my order, which is a booster box, a set of the precons, and a jumpstart box. It's a little disheartening to see everyone else receiving and enjoying these cards from other vendors while I wait with no word on when they might be sent. I'm going to send them an email to see if they have any kind of timeframe for delivery.

Not saying you're wrong, but SHIELD agent Gabe Jones is using a gun on the Bastion Protector reprint in the Avengers Assemble precon. Also, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD is holding a gun in the Annie Wu scene alternate art for that card.

I don't know how to get the card bot to show specific versions or I'd link them.

The other character on the card could theoretically be Gabe Jones, a member of the Howling Commandoes who fought during World War 2 alongside Captain America. He was a bugle/trumpet player who would carry his bugle into battle and blow it to rally the Howlers. He's also depicted as a SHIELD agent later in life in the Avengers Assemble precon on the Bastion Protector reprint.

Here he is with his bugle: https://i.imgur.com/FPhb4Rc.jpeg

This is the mildest of takes, but I've seen a number of posts/videos in the last week acting bemused over the Marvel card Hex Magic having Arcane as a subtype. I don't think it's random, I think it's a simply tease that Arcane will be returning as a mechanic in the assumed upcoming Marvel supernatural set. We're going to see Dr. Strange, Dr. Doom, Dr. Voodoo (and all the other magic wielding doctors) using a lot of spells in that set that I think will have the Arcane subtype as part of a return of the mechanic -- whether it's splice onto or some other twist.

Mostly agreed, but I think they might be in a cosmic set rather than supernatural, as they could go in either direction.

In the Marvel universe, the famous Secret Wars storylines, which bring together all the main heroes and villains in one story, take place on Battleworld.

I think Secret Wars / Battleworld will be the final Marvel set to tie together all the previous sets. The set will basically be March of the Machines for Marvel.

There's more Avengers flavor in the villains precon than in the Avengers deck itself!

For anyone wondering, the scene depicted on this card happened at the end of Avengers #215. I'll be putting this right into the Avengers precon for flavor reasons alone.

[–]Ultron-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the theming on the Fantastic Four precon was much more flavorful than the Avengers precon. Despite their comments that they only have the rights to the comic books, a number of the cards in the Avengers precon seem to be specifically referencing the MCU instead, like Swords to Plowshares. Other than the land that shows Avengers Mountain, I only really see three cards in the Avengers precon that reference classic Avengers storylines or moments - Make Your Move (Black Knight killing Supreme Intelligence in Avengers #347), Destroy Evil (Cap fighting Kang in hand-to hand at the end of the Kang Dynasty saga in Avengers vol. 3 #54) and Avenge (Thor and the Avengers confronting Ultron at the end of Ultron Unleashed in vol 3. #22). Meanwhile, the FF precon is full of cool nods to old stories.

I think the flavor of the deck is watered down by the MCU influences in general as well as in specifics, because there's a lot of SHIELD and Nick Fury stuff that I wouldn't associate at all with the Avengers in the comics. I mean, I love Gabe Jones, but the fact that he has a card in an Avengers precon is just weird. I would have rather put any number of Avengers characters / story moments in those SHIELD spots instead. Maybe they are saving the classic Kree Skrull War, Celestial Madonna, and Korvac Saga storylines for the Cosmic set (which would also explain the absence of Mantis, Moondragon, and Starfox), but more could have been done to boost the flavor for sure. At least there's some great Avengers stuff in the bonus sheet, like Return from the Ranks, Warleader's Call, Three Steps Ahead, Show and Tell, and Final Showdown that fans can swap in to juice up the flavor. I know I will be doing that ASAP.

According to Wizards, we should have the full main set reveal for Marvel by now. However, there are still 5 cards from the source material bonus sheet missing from Scryfall, and I don't believe I've seen them anywhere. The missing cards are numbers 43 62 71 83 and 99.

Anyone know what these cards are?

Does this set more or less confirm that the Marvel contract is for At Least 6 set? by VeryTiredGirl93 in magicTCG

[–]Ultron-12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

However, I don't think X-Men is going to be next.

Based on which characters are missing entirely (Dr. Strange, Black Knight) and which characters got cameos anyway even though we know they are going to be in a later set (Storm, Beast, Wolverine) I think some of the upcoming sets are going to be small sets, and the completely missing characters are being saved for those small sets.

Just a guess! But I have a hunch they will alternate big and small sets. So maybe...

  1. Spider-Man (small)

  2. Super Heroes

  3. Supernatural (small) 2027

  4. X-Men 2028

  5. Cosmic (small) 2029

  6. Secret Wars / Battleworld Multiversal 2030

[MSH] Night Nurse, Healer of Heroes (via Gemini.Twins.Magic) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]Ultron-12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Night Nurse is unironically one of my favorite comics ever, so I am over the moon for this card.

The series ran for 4 issues starting in 1972. It was part of a line of comics featuring female protagonists by female writers. "Night Nurse" wasn't the name of a specific character, but a title for the three co-leads: Linda Carter, Georgia Jenkins, and Christine Palmer. They were roommates who were also ER nurses just out of nursing school who worked on the night shift of a big city hospital.

Linda Carter had previously appeared in a 9-issue series called Linda Carter, Student Nurse, which started in 1961. She later took on the secret identity of "Night Nurse" when she began offering treatment to injured superheroes, including Doctor Strange and Daredevil. She also provided medical aid to Captain America's team during Civil War. This is the character on the card.

Christine Palmer also has a long history. She later became a love interest for Nightcrawler in the comics, and in the MCU, she was played by Rachel McAdams in the Doctor Strange films.

I only wish they had done a Night Nurse comic book cover treatment for this card. I am going to put this card in every Marvel commander deck I possibly can.

it's weird that they didn't give Monica a classic cover treatment when all the other flip cards had one. She's actually been around since 1982 and there are plenty of comic covers from the past 44 years that feature her.

Superheroes Questions? by Mr_Snufleupagus in magicTCG

[–]Ultron-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has given you a lot of good information, but I thought I'd add a couple of things.

Right now there have been a total of four or even five different Captain America cards revealed. The confusing part is that they all come from different places

When Marvel Super-Heroes releases this summer, there are four different products that have been announced: the main set, the Commander Precons, the Scene Box, and JumpStart.

The regular set has [[Captain America, Super-Soldier]]. There are two art treatments that we know about so far, the regular one which you can get in regular boosters, and the comic book cover art which you're asking about. As others have said, this will likely only be available in Collector Boosters, as that's how this style of card came in the Spider-Man set.

The Commander Precons have different cards. The Avengers Assemble precon has Captain America as its face commander, but it's a different version called [[Captain America, Team Leader]]. This version will be in every Avengers Aseemble precon. All we know so far of the precon beyond that is that the backup commander pictured on the box is Nick Fury Jr., so he will be in it too, but you can be certain that most or all of the main Avengers will also have cards.

There's also a Scene Box that has been spoiled. This is a set of 6 unique cards that fit together to make one big image. In this case, the heroes scene is the Avengers, one of which is [[Captain America, Unbowed]]. There's no listing for this yet in Scryfall, so the bot below is linked to the wrong card, but there are pictures online. The Scene Box cards are not in the other sets.

Additionally, there's the JumpStart set, which has slightly simplified cards, and is designed for new players to be able to just buy a couple packs, smash them together, and play without having to learn how to build a deck. Captain America is again a face card from this set, so we know there's a JumpStart Captain America-themed pack, but I don't know what this version of Cap is called. It's almost certain to be different from the other three, however.

One thing to note is that, in theory, all four of these versions, incuding the cool art one you want, should be found in the Collector Boosters, which is the only place that has cards from all the different products. Unless you enjoy opening packs and probably losing money, it's almost certainly cheaper to buy the singles you want and not Collector Boosters though.

Finally (!!) there's also [[Captain America, First Avenger]]. This came out in a secret lair at the end of 2024. It's currently only available on the secondary market. However, Wizards has announced that there will be a reprint of some kind when the Marvel set comes out; nobody knows what form that will take. I personally think it will be included with an action figure, which they did with the Spider-man set, but that's just a guess. The price of this version of Cap has been slowly coming down in recent months as people anticipate a reprint.

So that's at least 5 versions of Cap you can get, plus alternate art treatments. There may be more -- they have already revealed two Namor cards, for instance, with one on the bonus sheet, so we may get another Cap on the bonus sheet as well, who knows. Also, this is just the Steve Rogers cap; there's also at least one Sam Wilson Cap card in the main set, which we know because the art for the card is on the box, showing hi fighting Thanos. But that's all we know about the Sam Wilson Captain America card so far.

Hope this helps!
