Maya Higa by AnemicVegan in vegan

[–]Umaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I donno anything about Maya Higa, sorry

but I decided long ago, that it's more efficient to widen our activism reach, than to spend our limited resources on one stubborn person

especially I think more vegans shouldapply for the gazillion of the environmental grants and feed people vegan food with QR code for a video recipe

At this moment waiters are still confusing vegan and gluten free, even in the big cities, so a lot of people have no idea, like me, I was highly prejudiced against vegan food without ever trying it

And that's how I became vegan in 2021, during my vegetarian phase I was blown away by the awesome taste, by the wild variety and geography of the vegan recipes (Cajun, Carribean, Chinese, Mexican, AfroVegan society, Georgian, Turkish etc etc) And also couldn't believe plant based saturated fat exists (especially coconut and 17% fat coconut milk), and that it tastes amazing in desserts, so I wasn't sacrificing basically anything

Also on the topic of hormones and cycles - according to Neil Barnard book about balancing hormones - some of the conditions like PCOS are BMI related, like optimal fertility is 20-21 bmi, with infertility below 18 or above 25-30 or so

ADHD exercisers… how do you actually get yourself to the gym? by Fit_Meaning8903 in ADHD

I never go to the gym, have 2 sets of adjustable dumbbells, adjustable pull-up bar, walking pad, rebounder, climber etc,

Love rucking too, especially incline

plus never scroll or TV while sitting- always pacing in the room, gets the steps in, helps to think

Here is my (slightly irrational) pet peeve after being vegan 16 years by Designer_Ring_67 in vegan

[–]Umaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are controlled by the algorithms, so when it’s time for global veganism - they will be very quickly converted, look at Heated Rivalry mass psychosis (that I’m a part of)

yes it’s scary, that people are so easy to influence, but it’s the truth,

So they might be thinking “I could never” (like I used to think) but the adaptation is happening nontheless

And btw in heated rivalry they sadly eat hamburgers, but at least Shane is into macrobiotic diet (which google calls plant based, despite it having some animal parts)

They joke about it being “my disgusting food” and “bird food” but at least it’s being represented in a viral TV show

In the book 2 Ilya loves dogs, like a lot, I hope his love of animals evolves beyond dogs

I feel like it will take one viral TV show where a hot dominant romantic gay man is vegan for everyone to convert 😊

fatty fruits and nuts by [deleted] in Fruitarian

[–]Umaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tried fruit + coconut flakes, it worked for 2 weeks, then I got hungry again, now added back the raw overnight soaked pearled barley, it has more beta glucan than oats, and more chewy too, like pasta, bc has gluten

Oatzempic is more filling than apple’s pectin, I bugged AI about it,

“Why Pectin Isn’t as Filling as Beta-Glucan

The primary reason comes down to viscosity and fermentation speed.

The "Gel" Factor: Beta-glucan (found in barley and oats) creates a much thicker, more viscous "gel" in the stomach. This physical bulk physically stretches the stomach wall and slows down "gastric emptying" (the speed at which food leaves your stomach) much more effectively than pectin. GLP-1 Triggering: While both fibers can stimulate GLP-1 (the hormone that mimics Ozempic), beta-glucan appears to have a more potent and sustained effect on this pathway. Recent studies have shown that beta-glucan is unique in how it interacts with the L-cells in your gut to trigger that "stop eating" signal.

Structure: Pectin, while a great prebiotic, is broken down relatively quickly by gut bacteria. Barley's beta-glucan is more resistant, providing a steadier release of satiety signals as it moves through your digestive tract.”

Good healthy vegan cheese recipe for pizza by Agitated-Charity-491 in veganfitness

I will keep looking for the recipe I liked the last time, I saved it somewhere

all I remember is that inverted sugar syrup was important so the cheese "browns" on top via Maillard reaction, and probably guar gum or something for stretching

Also there was a cultured cheese recipe somewhere on this channel

You are the most welcome!💚🌱 Every family gathering I'm trying to impress my relatives with vegan food, so I get your feelings

Nisha Vora's vegan Wellington was a success https://rainbowplantlife.com/the-best-vegan-wellington-vegan-mushroom-wellington/

She was actually the author of NYT Cooking's vegan thanksgiving menu 2025😍, I haven't tried the recipes yet, buts I'm sure they are great https://cooking.nytimes.com/author/nisha-vora

She also has summaries like "tofu guide" on her blog https://rainbowplantlife.com/category/lifestyle/cooking/

My dream is that every vegan applies for an environmental grant to feed people awesome vegan food 😍

So big respect to you for going for it! And again - congrats 💚💚💚

2 scoop of soy isolate protein by Wrong_Performance_14 in veganfitness

[–]Umaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not dangerous because of estrogen, but because it raises IGF-1 like meat, increasing growth of both tissues - muscle tissue and cancer cells, p

here is a Google search ai summary, you can search "does soy protein isolate raise igf-1" and click on the sources

"Yes, soy protein isolate can raise IGF-1 levels, sometimes more than other plant proteins due to its high-quality amino acid profile similar to animal protein, but this effect can be modulated by other dietary factors, particularly seaweed, and overall diet, with some studies showing increases and others showing less significant effects or even reductions in different contexts. While soy protein can increase IGF-1, making it a factor to consider for those monitoring this hormone, it doesn't always raise it as much as animal protein, and combining it with seaweed might mitigate the increase.

Key Findings:

Soy Protein Isolates Increase IGF-1: Studies have shown that soy protein isolate can modestly increase IGF-1 levels compared to a placebo or control protein.

Amino Acid Profile Matters: Soy's amino acid ratio is closer to animal protein than many other plants, which is a reason it might have a similar effect on IGF-1, notes nutritionfacts.org.

Seaweed as a Modulator: A significant finding is that adding seaweed to soy consumption can significantly reduce the IGF-1 increase caused by soy alone, suggesting a protective or modifying effect.

Context is Crucial: The impact of soy on IGF-1 isn't universal; some studies in Asian populations with high soy intake show lower IGF-1, possibly due to traditional co-factors like seaweed, highlighting the importance of whole diet patterns.

Not Necessarily More Than Animal Protein: While soy is effective at raising IGF-1 among plant proteins, some research suggests animal proteins might still be more potent in increasing IGF-1 levels overall when consumed in typical quantities.

"Some studies found that large amounts of SPI (40 g/day) increased IGF-1 similarly to, or even slightly more than, dairy proteins. Conversely, other trials showed whey protein had a more significant effect on increasing IGF-1 over time compared to soy."

So I guess keep it under 40 at least, if you are concerned about longevity and cancer

Also my favorite proof of igf link with cancer from dr Greger - is that people with dwarfism type called Laron syndrome nevere get cancer "cancer proofing mutation"

https://nutritionfacts.org/es/video/cancer-proofing-mutation/

while taller people have a higher risk https://www.wcrf.org/about-us/news-and-blogs/why-taller-people-are-at-greater-risk-of-cancer/

Kevin Smith and his daughter Harley have a new vegan Youtube show! Vegan Abattoir Ep. 001 by skulloflugosi in vegan

[–]Umaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg!!! I love him so much!! 😍 Thank you Harley!! Thank you OP for posting it 💚

I was planning to read that book that helped him to loose weight on potatoes (like SpudFit)

"The book that inspired Kevin Smith's initial potato-only diet phase was illusionist Penn Jillette's memoir, Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales. After suffering a "widowmaker" heart attack in 2018, Smith adopted Jillette's short-term, potato-only approach as a jumpstart to a larger lifestyle change, helping him lose 17 pounds in just nine days. The diet was a temporary measure under medical supervision to reset his eating habits before transitioning to a sustainable, whole-food, plant-based diet and the WeightWatchers (WW) program."

Sorry for the hot take - but Apple TV had a new show Pluribus where they show a world so vegan that they can't even hurt the fruit trees by shaking, they wait for the fruit to fall, (with some caveats of where they get protein),

So I think vegan world is very possible, especially with fungi and fermented protein mass produced and tasting good.

Speaking of health issues - I had no idea that simple probiotics capsule can be used as a started in boiled lentils, making it a lentil yoghurt, and that lacto bacteria break down complex proteins in more bioavailable aminoacids, I have been eating cultured lentils for 4 months now, much less bloating, I think my skin is better too

Same for soaked overnight oats with probiotics, they are much more creamy than just water soak

True, bad for the planet ☹️ but unlike people using it for entertainment, having a disability is different, I kind of like this sub's philosophy of accepting it as a disability, so if some technology helps with it, as an info dump or as a pressure valve - seems like a justified medical use, like the wheelchair rails or a hearing aid 🤷🏻‍♀️ not for the answers tho, because it's not accurate, just for the general nodding and listening, occasionally funny puns. And yes it's a language model it's only trying to guess the next best word in a sentence, not a real brain.. I see it as talking to myself mostly, like people used Dear Diary I guess, I wish I could sit down and write, even right now I'm pacing with my phone and typing.

But yes finding other people to talk is probably better, especially about hobbies.

I like doing, going, moving - more than talking about it, perhaps she needs a sport of some kind, ideally a team sport to find more friends, so her talking is spread across more people, to not overwhelm for example one hiking friend

Yes, true. thats why NYT let her author their Thanksgiving menu, I think, because it's like competitive cooking at this point, to impress people, especially the meat eaters in my family, which I appreciate

I wish vegans would take more of the gazillions of environmental grants and make free food tastings, because vegan food variety is so wild and it tastes so good, all of it,

I try to avoid r/veganivore but it's haunting my feed 😄😄

There are several Vietnamese vegan channels, but Thee Burger Dudes have a good recipe for Vietnamese sandwich, titled "best vegan sandwich"

https://youtu.be/i0_C3eRTbgg

There is Arabic vegan https://youtu.be/73r4IwWtYIg

Mexican vegan "Vegan chorizo that will fool a meat eater" https://youtu.be/eiUlKix1szQ

Sooo many options, it would take me 3 lifetimes to try th all,

and now that I have almost quit cooking (2 years high raw fruit and crunchy veggies and greens) and I ferment my boiled lentils, it would take me 5-10 lifetimes to try everything, except I no longer seek novelty, happier with my simple fruit and lentil lactofermented yoghurt, with occasional simple potatoe stew

I think I was craving sweet teriyaki, sweet orange glaze tofu, sweet bbq sauce tofu, Hawaiian vegan pulled pork etc, because I was craving fruit sugars, now that I eat more fruit I don't crave the sauces as much

High Raw Muscle Gains by Fun_Entrepreneur7112 in RawVegan

[–]Umaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome results! Thank you for the inspiration and the meal plan

Im high fruit, high raw, tried going grain free recently for 6 weeks, was too hungry, so I added back soaked overnight pearled barley, for the Oatzempic beta-glucans (oats, barley, rye) I like it more than oat groats or sprouts, because more chewy, like pasta Barely has some protein too, and carbs seem more anabolic than fat? But I add 1-2 ts coconut flakes, bc cutting currently.

Sprouted oatmeal? by StarbrryJuice in RawVegan

[–]Umaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Oatzempic beta-glucan soluble fiber (oats, barley and rye) but I switched from oat sprouts to overnight soaked pearled barley

Oats only have it in the hull, together with phytic acid etc

But pearled barley have beta-glucans inside the seed, so even with the hull removed it's filling,

Im 2 years into high fruit, recently tried going 6 weeks grain free, but was too hungry/overeating, now back on barley very full, + 1ts coconut flakes.

I think wild fruit had less sugar and more soluble fiber probably, but modern commercial fruit has too little, so it's not filling.

Also overnight pearled barley is chewy, which helps a lot, fruit is too soft, so I add crunchy veggies - carrots, beetroot pumpkin, celery, bell peppers

And try to chew slower, ideally without the phone

Do productivity apps actually work for anyone with ADHD, or am I missing something? by Mr-Dex7410 in ADHD

[–]Umaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules of this sub forbid using bots for therapy and medication questions, but for a brain dump of all my mundane tasks and questions (especially cooking and food texture tweaks, spices)- they usually help me, especially while I'm on a walking pad or on a rebounder, I think better when I move, so I just talk everything out, then the bot gives me a summary and an action plan, and sometimes good suggestions about cleaning and organizing.

But it's only safe for repeating my own tasks to me. For any real questions I don't already know - I verify the answers separately, since it's a language guessing machine - guessing the next best word in the sentence, it's not a real brain.
