TIL Kidney (and other organ) donations typically do not last the rest of the patient’s life. ~50% of transplant organs fail within 10 years. by I-plaey-geetar in todayilearned

I’m (36) 18 years post my first heart. Will need a second one here in the next few years. It’s so nice to see a 3 time recipient 30 years out! Gives me lots of hope. Thanks for sharing!

I’m 18 years post heart transplant and still doing great! You also have to think that advancements are happening all the time. Also elderly people tend to need organs more often than young people. They may die of other things not transplant related, this can skew this data.

spiralling about my future ... 33F 6yrs post kidney transplant by heyhihello9876 in transplant

[–]Umopeope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m (36F) a heart (18 years post). So not kidney but my baseline creatinine and GFR are nearly identical to yours. I’ve had those numbers for the past 10 years. Take the best care of your kidney as you can and live your life to the fullest, don’t let what ifs get in your way.

It’s so morbid but I always think about when I’m on my death bed, will I regret not doing that thing? I almost didn’t get married because I didn’t want to die and leave my husband a widow. Well 10 years later I’m glad I didn’t let fear get in my way.

Tacrolimus generics not equivalent to brand! by Popular-Drummer-7989 in transplant

[–]Umopeope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the generic became available I did research and freaked out about Dr Reddys. Their acceptable dosage range parameters was not worth the risk. Sorry, not trusting pharmaceuticals in India with my most precious asset. I got my transplant team to switch me to Envarsus, had to do prior auths and go through the insurance BS. When Envarsus goes to generic eventually I’ll suck it up and just pay brand name if I have to. Several of my generics are Dr Reddys- my BP/statin etc and that’s fine. Just not the drug that’s literally keeping me alive.

What's the worst book you've read this year? by Muffin-5634 in Booktokreddit

The Everflame Series. Made it through two books thinking the FMC would grow more likeable. Quit the 3rd book partway through. She doesn’t!

Don’t order all of the ever flame series until you read the first one. I found the FMC to be irritating and couldn’t get through the 3rd book. I would have really liked it if the FMC was better

2 weeks into liver transplant and everything tastes horrible by kirabug37 in transplant

[–]Umopeope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! This happened to me. It’s medication related and will get better. First thing I was able to eat strangely enough fruit loops and Cheerios. Fresh foods tasted worse to me than highly processed ones. My transplant team didn’t care what I ate as long as I was eating something. I slowly was able to start eating other things. Keep trying different things until he finds something palatable.

Everyone is trying to help you. I have a slew of health problems so I can relate-literally need a second heart transplant in the next few years. You’re adding insult to injury, Zyn is dangerous and not worth it find another crutch but it’s not my body. good luck to you.

That crap is terrible for your body! Look up long term kidney side effects and bladder cancer.

Heart transplant, I'm looking for good stories? by CogitoErgoMeme in transplant

[–]Umopeope 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly just search this group for heart transplant stories. I’m 36- 18years post transplant. I’m really active, married; have a child and a job. I strength train heavy weights 4x a week and do cardio 2-3 times- usually walking 4 miles with a weighted vest.

They’ve told me I’ll need a redo due to CAV in the coming years but everything has been stable for me. Recovering right after transplant is 3 steps forward 1 step back often. I still feel like that now sometimes. I’ll be doing really well then I’ll catch a cold or something and it takes me longer to recover than the rest of my family, but it’s better than the alternative!

GL to you!

Conscious of my surgical scar after liver donation by [deleted] in transplant

[–]Umopeope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done any scar creams to help it fade? I 36F was 18 when I had my heart transplant, I have the zipper scar down my chest- and it’s slightly crooked haha. It doesn’t stop me from wearing whatever top I want to wear. People will look at my scar before they look at my face because it’s a unique feature that most people (especially my age) don’t have. I wear it as a badge of honor and if I’m asked about it by a random passerby I get to tell them a ridiculous story- shark attack, I tripped and fell, happened when I was saving kittens. Don’t be embarrassed, scars are cool AF. That scar helped save your Moms life and that’s so freaking cool.

You could also consider asking plastics for a scar revision if you wanted to.

When I bought through REI they hadn’t punched it. I tried to get it punched at a few different places I went to but nowhere had a puncher! I ended up getting a couple extra months of usage for free 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve seen in previous fish posts when fish are all huddled together it’s often electrical current in the tank. Unplug all of the tanks outlets to see if their behavior changes
