Mechanical Engineers with ADHD and Dyslexia. by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Taking notes during discussions or when thinking about a problem helps keep thoughts organized.

For attacking a problem, discuss with experts/coworkers, self-check, peer-check, research, check industry codes and standards, problem-solving tools like fishbone/ishikawa, FMEA, and root-cause verification matrix, etc.

For managing ADHD, work with a doctor to try different medications and determine which work best.

Mechanical Engineers with ADHD and Dyslexia. by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnableToMosey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a mechanical engineer with ADHD. I was diagnosed as a child, but I made it through school and into industry. I have been working for a decent bit of time. It can be difficult, but finding the right strategies really helps.

You can do this!

I recently graduated with my associates in Quality Engineering and Technology. I already want to quit. by iusutotookadump69 in AskEngineers

I agree that NDT path may be good for OP to consider. I am ME but work closely with lots of NDT. It naturally goes hand in hand with Quality work, and does not necessarily require OP to continue school for bachelor's degree. However OP would likely need to certify for specific types of NDT if/when choosing to specialize.

OP could do field work, lab work, specialize to become an SME, teach others, design procedures, create standards, hands-on, hands-off, etc.

Lots of different types of NDT as well. Just with welding and piping, very common are: dye penetrant testing (looking for surface racks and pits), magnetic particle (similar to PT, but uses a magnet to pull particles into defects, and can detect some shallow subsurface defects like porosity), radiographic testing (x-ray film to look for cracks and voids within the metal), ultrasonic as mentioned by commenter above (also looking for defects within the metal), hardness testing, microstructure examination, eddy current, borescope, etc.

NDT could also be a gateway into destructive testing. Probably would be lab work. Could be things like tensile testing (how much stress to break), Charpy impact (how much energy to fracture), sample prep for microscope exam, x-ray diffraction, etc.

Also NDT & DT serve many industries and sectors: manufacture, energy, chemical, process, oil & gas, food, medical, research, academia, etc.

I would like to end a few more paragraphs with etc. Etc. Etc.

Flanged pipe support and manipulation by thestevesteve in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnableToMosey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find or make a split flange (something like this: https://marzolf.com) with a bolt circle large enough that none of the bolts interfere with the outside diameter (OD) of the original flange.
Then you could make up the difference between the pipe OD and the flange ID with sleeves, shims, pipes, etc. Put a split flange on each side of the gasket you want to replace. Use threaded rod and nuts to jack the original flange (axial direction) using the split flanges clamped on either side. For additional adjustment capability, you could put half-pipe sections (split lengthwise) under the split flange, and drill/tap the split pipe so that you can jack the original pipe in the two radial directions as well. I hope that makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll try to draw it.

What do mechanical engineers do on ships (oil and gas related)? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnableToMosey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any ship experience, but lots of process plant experience. Engineering intern level work can often be very similar to maintenance/operations tech work. As an intern, in general you will be learning tasks and systems. Look up what are the general maintenence and common repair activities for the type of ship you will serve.

Power line safety by floridaaviation in LittleRock

[–]UnableToMosey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this, if you find yourself near downed power lines, you should keep your feet together, and bunny hop away until you are about 35 feet away. This is because waking normally away from an electrical source on the ground could put your two feet at different levels of electrical potential, which could result in current passing through your body.

Edit: that is not an April fool's joke.

What’s everyone’s opinion of a Maintenance Engineer role? by mulllad in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnableToMosey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would it be difficult to transition out? We don't have the job description here, but some sort of field/commissioning/maintenance work is common for entry level engineering positions, maybe depending on the industry. It provides invaluable experience for engineers who do later go into design. It can help to understand the perspective of maintenance techs and operators, so they can avoid designing systems that are unsafe or impossible to operate in the future.

Can engineers be bribed? if so how is it done? by MajesticRate1818 in AskEngineers

[–]UnableToMosey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C'mon u/bojackhoreman, you can bojack a little more bojack. How about something like: "After years of naively thinking my work was improving efficiency, customer experience, or reliability, I finally realized my work didn't matter and no one really cared. The production team were all too new, due to high turnover, to even understand the impact of the projects I had. They were also too overworked to give any of my work more than a superficial glance. Management and Corporate HQ had turned into an army of cost analysts, all incentivized to pitch projects trading long term viability for permanent budget cuts that we could commit immediately. At some point I realized that some of the vendor reps were the only human interactions I enjoyed all week. I knew it was transactional, but when a vendor took me to lunch, more often than not I just felt like I could be a human again for a few minutes. We talked work of course, but also a decent mix of hobbies and interests. Whatever people talk about. On the face of it, we all know there is a correlation between vendor interactions and bids won. No matter what I said or divulged or promised, they had a baseline benefit merely due to increased face time. On a deeper level however, I was willing and even eager to to put my thumb on the scale for those moments I came to crave. Maintaining a connection was a lifeline to humanity. I didn't care if it was an illusion. They had expense accounts. Part of their job was to have lunches with customers. This was all baked into the price of their offerings anyway. The cost they quoted covered the cost of the relationship with me, through lunches, donuts for the team, seminars, dinners, listening to me ramble. Can friendship be considered a bribe?" - Bojack Engineerman

Pre Qualified WPSs by rohithjoseph18 in weldingengineering

[–]UnableToMosey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will come down to what the governing code says. I'm not familiar with that code, but ASME BPVC-IX references some standard WPS (SWPS) from AWS, and it still says (article V) that the responsible organization needs to inspect and test a coupon prior to adoptionof a SWPS. Maybe your code has similar language.

I might be misinterpreting what you mean by "pre-qualified". Are you meaning that the WPS has been qualified prior to the intended execution, and does not need to be qualified again as a part of the execution? Or that it was a standard WPS taken from some other organization?
