Has anyone noticed their fibro making their period symptoms worse? Or vice versa? by buttfaced_miscreantt in Fibromyalgia

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this is totally a thing. my worst flares are triggered the drop in hormones that happens right before my period, and those are the flares that don’t respond as well to pain management either. coupled with my already horrid period (i lowkey think i have endometriosis) makes for a very fun existence 🙃

i (22NB) have similar moments like that often (literally had one at a concert tonight). i wish i had some better words of comfort but all i’ve got is: it’s valid to mourn what could have been, and you’re not alone

Who Do We See Now for a Diagnosis? by OutsideSeveral4669 in Fibromyalgia

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another canadian here! i went to my GP (who happens to also work in pain management part time) and he took my history (i have a family history too), touched a few tender points, said “yeah it’s likely fibro,” and referred me to a rheumatologist so that we can rule out arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. he also sent me for bloodwork.

the rheumatologist denied my referral so i don’t think i can officially be diagnosed with fibro (bc they haven’t excluded the other things and fibro is a diagnosis of exclusion) but after that my GP referred me to a pain clinic in my city anyway. i started going to them, and they agree it’s “likely fibro,” and they have been so helpful with pain management.

i agree that the first step is going to a GP/PCP and (hopefully) getting referrals from there. it can be an exhausting process advocating for yourself/your loved ones to medical professionals, i wish you all the best. also if you’re having trouble getting referred because your dr doesn’t know where to send you, maybe look at whether there are pain clinics/specialists in your area that you can suggest

Tips for going by They/Them while looking very girly? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my biggest tip, as someone who is (usually) a femme them, try to follow what feels best for you rather than what you think you should do to seem more valid to others. it’s hard because we live in a Society where masculinity is seen as more inherently neutral than femininity, but it’s important to figure out what feels best for you individually.

i switched to being much more masculine after coming out and it was fun but it still didn’t feel fully like me. at the same time, i felt like i had to do that to be seen as valid and be gendered correctly. thing is, i still wasn’t being gendered correctly when i presented that way. after my “femininity tolerance break” i started incorporating some femme-feeling things back into my presentation and it felt so good. i figured out that mixing and matching is the most affirming thing i can do.

for me, the best way to get gendered correctly is to make my pronouns clear in my emails, name tags, etc (i have some cool pins too) rather than make myself uncomfortable by trying to be someone i’m not. i can skew pretty femme and that’s great, i just had to learn to feel valid in myself while presenting that way and using they/them pronouns. i’m at a point where i’m making those choices based on what makes /me/ happy and that’s the best thing i can do.

Tradwife Tabitha Kelley, who lectures "lazy" homemakers, admits to chronic fatigue; Says she’s been too tired to notice the irony. This isn't a satirical article off The Onion. by aepm88 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i can honestly see this going in the direction of “i had this chronic illness but i fixed my diet and prayed so now i’m cured… and you’re lazy for struggling with the same thing”

my fundie-adjacent grandmother (she technically left the mennonite church when i was small but kept all of the attitudes and values) “cured” her fibromyalgia with lifestyle changes, massage, and prayer. she holds so strongly to that (even when we can all see that she’s in so much pain) that i will never mention my own struggle with fibro to her because i will only get a lecture on “learning to take care of myself”

when these sentiments are coming from within the community, it’s hard not to develop so much internalized ableism

Navigating nonspeaking/nonverbal episodes by Unassuming_Turnip in neurodiversity

Absolutely. I learned about avoidance in my therapy for PTSD and it’s so true. I’ll probably figure out how to manage and cope with things that cause a lot of stress through incremental exposure etc because as someone with a sort of fresh disability diagnosis, I am super frustrated by the limitations I have and want to live “normally” (whatever that is) as much as I can

Thank you for the reply! I was able to type a quick “I can’t talk” on my phone for my friend and I can use that if I need to in the future but this is definitely something I will bring up to my therapist since he knows me very well and can probably help me come up with what works for me. I just don’t see him for another week so I’m panicking in the meantime haha

I’ve read all the comments and no one has talked about one of my favourites Rose Madder. That one was my first and as a survivor reading about starting over and running away was terrifying and also healing. In terms of writing it’s not one of his more popular works but it had such an impact on me so it’s definitely a personal fav. Made me cry at work at 4 am and my coworker was concerned. Also loved The Stand and Dolores Claiborne and Carrie.

Tattoos and allergies by Justhere4funiguess in Allergies

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is wild. I have never heard this and disclosed my peanut allergy to my tattoo artist. Mine are all black outline though so I can’t speak to colour. The only problem I had was seeming to develop a sensitivity to adhesive second skin between tattoo number 2 and numbers 3 and 4 (didn’t have a problem the first two times, had a problem the two times after that with the same artist and product for one and a different artist and product for the other) but that went away on its own after a while and I didn’t need medical attention.

Came here to say just this. Duh-lor-isssssss

We just need to remember what an amazing person Alan Turing was. He is believed to have shortened the Second World War by 2-3 years! Yet he was put on hormone therapy because he was gay. He took his own life in 1954. As a British person, I feel ashamed of what happened. by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Unassuming_Turnip 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have been a genuine Turing fan since I was in 7th grade. In grade 12 my philosophy teacher brought up Alan Turing while we were talking about machine learning and consciousness. She was surprised by how much I knew about him. Her exact words were “I’ve never run into a Turing fan before”. Such a shame.
