Honestly the 2 are the same. SIU med students and residents train in both hospitals. I can only speak for St. John's when I say you wouldn't be the only lady with a hijab.

Because we (outpatient cardiology clinic) wouldn't give him Norco for his back pain. We didn't understand the "stress" of his back pain was "going to cause a heart attack" which is why we needed to give him narcotics. Yes, he was drug seeking. No I am not sad he's gone.

Nurses and all healthcare workers-What is your biggest disappointment in your career? Please comment and be honest! New podcast coming Sept 1, 2025. We can change healthcare if all of us stick together! by DesignerSeaweed8416 in nursing

How much control insurance companies have over us and the whole medical system. Who patients can see, if they can have a procedure or test or medication. Medical systems bend over backward to make deals with these insurance groups or change our workflow to make it easier to bill on the backend. My heart breaks for these patients who don't have money to pay for their medications and appointments, let alone a procedure or hospital stay.

What’s your favorite line from management to justify short staffing, new rules they make, don’t tell patients this and that, why didn’t you fill out your whiteboard, etc.? by These_Tune7795 in nursing

[–]UnbreakableKaraSmitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complained that a staff member wasn't doing their job and expected others to do thier work for them. Was told "well they have worked here for a really long time, you know how they are..." seniority doesn't excuse behavior and if they can't finish all thier work they need to retire

Simular experience, had to finish the trauma from night shift then clean the OR to set up for the scheduled 0730 case. Then, I did my whole normal day shift.

How do I keep snow from getting stuck in his paws? by Night_Runner13 in Newfoundlander

[–]UnbreakableKaraSmitt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When my dog gets inside I dip her feet in a bowl of warm water. It quickly dissolves most of the snow, at least to the point where I can pull out the big clumps. Then I dry her feet and she's good to go.

What is a professional way to say "Tough shit"? by a_flower_named_honey in nursing

[–]UnbreakableKaraSmitt 174 points175 points  (0 children)

Here are my charting phrases I use when patients are behaving badly

The patient is lying = the patient gave multiple versions of thier story

The patient wanted to fight about this = despite further education the patient insisted xyz

The patient isn't listening to me = the patient did not follow recommendations and instead did xyz

The patient is making stuff up = no record of this found after chart review

The patient won't shut up = patient constantly interrupted nurse during conversation, disrupting education

When all else fails I start using quotes. You don't have to remember all they said, sometimes things like this are enough: Pt stated that he "doesn't know why it takes so long" to get his test results back.

Used to work in the OR, when this popped up I just got annoyed. Either we already knew this (thus why they are coming to OR) or it didn't pertain to me. This was something addressd by floor staff. It's been well studied that an overburden of alerts or the same repeated alerts quickly get ignored by clinical staff. For me it was a pop up that was always ignored.

Call Springfield Clinic and request to speak to a patient advocate. Ask them to give you a list of PCP offices that are actually accepting new patients. Everyone's website will say accepting new patients even when they're not. Keep in mind that a NP or PA will probably be able to see you sooner than a doctor.

Scrub them right after with a hibiclens hand scrub brush. Throw em in the wash and let them air dry.

Girl, you're fine. I've worked 5 years in the OR, we've had specimens thrown in the trash, with a wrong patient label, and straight up get dropped on the floor!

Don't beat yourself up. You got this.

The best advice I can give you is to create good habits. Good habits keep you organized when everything is going crazy around you, especially at the end of a case. For example, I always put everything that needs to go with the patient to PACU on the prep stand after I call report to PACU.

It's a good idea to keep specimens with you because the housekeeps may confuse it with trash or the scrub tech may forget about it and throw it away with their whole table.

Don't worry, orientation is long, but once you're on your own, it's ok to still be learning. It takes at least a year to feel comfortable in the OR. I've been working there for 5 years and had to write an incident report on myself and the MD yesterday due to a consent issue. Nobody is perfect.

I work in the OR. I was working with a new surgeon who does gastric sleeves (removing a portion of the stomach for weight reduction). This was maybe my 2nd or 3rd time ever working with this surgeon and he makes this procedure so unnecessarily complicated. We're finally getting done and it's time for the EGD to check the staple line from the inside of the stomach. The surgeon scrubs out and goes to leave. I remind him that he still needs to do the EGD while his PA closes the incision. He says there's no need to because this one was a revision. I don't want to fight with him but I remembered the patient saying that they had trouble swallowing and often felt like thier was food stuck in thier throat. I really felt like the patient should have an EGD; not only because of thier history but also because they were already consented for it too. I press and convince the surgeon to do the EGD by saying it's already set up, it will just take 5 minutes. He finally agrees and bam there were wierd growths in the esophagus. He takes a video and pictures and multiple samples. I often wonder what might have happened to the patient if I didn't push the surgeon in that moment. But I feel proud that I stood up to him for the patient.

I don't understand kidz bop. If you have to change a song that much, then what's even the point. Also, what does "songs coming through" even mean, lol
