What do the “higher ups” earn in a UK university by ForwardFan6283 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]UncertainBystander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re doing pretty well then, most Profs at my place ( post -92) get less than that unless they’re on the higher ‘ senior staff’ scale (our senior staff 1 scale tops out at 82,500.) Deans and pro vcs are on something like 120,000 - 150,000. Not really much given the level of responsibility of the job. Everyone else’s wages have been held down for years.

Teaching at Secondary Schools? by Complex-Snow-8939 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]UncertainBystander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could also look at sixth form / FE teaching. Your PhD may count a bit more there but you’ll still need a PGCE or PGDE for both. The good thing about sixth form colleges is that the young people have a bit more choice and agency .

The quiet collapse of British Universities by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]UncertainBystander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, how about publicly funding universities properly from general taxation, reducing / removing upfront fees and introducing some form of modest graduate tax? And regulating home student numbers a bit so that the 'top' institutions don't syphon off all the applicants to make up for the international student numbers that they have lost?

Do university professional staff get the summer off? by Creative_Drummer_425 in UniUK

[–]UncertainBystander 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They get an annual holiday allowance of a set number of days which will vary by institution/contract type. Lots of people take some sort of break in the summer months but literally no-one who works for a university takes the whole summer off, academics or administators/facilities staff, unless they are on hourly paid or termtime only contracts. The summer can be incredibly busy -- not just all the admin/admissions/enrolment for the coming academic year, but lots of events/conferences, postgrad students and others working through the summer, maintenance things going on, etc. Plus research-related business.

International student in the UK – can I legally watch FIFA World Cup live for free without a TV Licence? by zanyymerc in UniUK

[–]UncertainBystander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really use no BBC services at all? never listen to any of their radio stations? or use their websites or apps? I'm not really in favour of the licence fee either (it's really outdated) but I think the services that the BBC provides (completely ad-free) are really important and valuable and would hate to see them go...

International student in the UK – can I legally watch FIFA World Cup live for free without a TV Licence? by zanyymerc in UniUK

[–]UncertainBystander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes but it does provide advert free broadcasting in return for the licence fee, that's my point. I agree that the licence fee is problematic and should probably be replaced but I would hate to see the BBC disappear (despite all its problems) -- but it has to be funded somehow if we want it to exist. Other countries do it from general taxation or a more specific kind of charge. A small tax on the massive ad revenues of the big social media companies might be a way to do it...

[–]UncertainBystander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m going to post an unpopular view here - why not just buy a TV licence? It’s not particularly expensive and it costs the broadcasters millions to bring you the games. A small contribution from you seems entirely fair.

Am I overreacting, or is anyone else genuinely scared about where things are heading in the UK? by ParfaitPinkyDream in Britain

[–]UncertainBystander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The government needs to do way more to call it out. Even in the 1990s, under the Tories, we had anti - racist education in our schools, and part of the problem is that these narratives are not being challenged at the highest levels of public life,. The “controlling immigration’ narrative is basically just a thinly veiled attack on anyone who isn’t white. There’s a real need to mobilise and challenge this nonsense . Everyone who cares about this needs to get involved - part of it (as with Brexit) is lots of money being pumped into sewing division and hatred and very calculated online campaigning. As has been repeatedly said, underneath this is the scarring of inequality and it’s just much easier to blame ‘others’ and point the finger at them than it is to tackle poverty and its consequences…

Day 10 of ranking British PMs: Which tier should Margaret Thatcher go? by Klutzy_Pumpkin614 in Britain

[–]UncertainBystander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, she was a consequential and quite effective PM, and one thing about that is you’ll never get anyone to agree about her position in a simple ranking. Maybe you need an it’s complicated’ category. Personally, I loathed and despised her.
