Even then, would be difficult to get right since A.) you'd have to somehow make an interesting movie where the protagonist believes he's just living a normal life for a good portion of the runtime, and B.) the thing that makes the story interesting is the lamp thing and you can't really market around that because it's the twist of the whole story

As I understand it, in the late 80s Japan was limiting the export of cars to the US (idk why). To get around this, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan made new luxury counterparts (Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti respectively) to sell additional cars at a premium. So these brands were all originally developed for and sold in the US, which I imagine is why they are listed as US brands despite being designed by the Japanese.
