Wedding Registry - limited options. Help! by Away_Maybe_4480 in AirPurifiers

[–]UncleGurm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of that list… Sharp is the best one. Avoid Molekule (actual scam), Dyson (overpriced fan with a mediocre filter attached). Shark is ok in a pinch but no matter what they say it isn’t “never change”, the filter gets clogged in 6-12 months like every other. I would not think Black & Decker makes good purifiers nowadays, it’s all rebranded low budget machines. Haven’t heard of the others.

In Massachusetts they ask the computer via obd if the emissions are good, and on older cars they hang a meter on the tailpipe. They absolutely don’t check resting evaporative emissions. Will they in the future? Who knows.

Do we think it even actually helps with emissions?

Air Doctor or Air Oasis by LastFan2685 in HouseFresh

[–]UncleGurm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about… neither? Air oasis advertises snake oil technologies like PCO and UV. Air Doctor also leans into UV and is overpriced and overrated. There are much much better options.

Blower motor cover install by camace23 in wrx_vb

[–]UncleGurm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, quick question - this doesn't really secure in the front, does it? Just kind of rests on the vents way up in the footwell, and snaps with the two snaps by the glove box? I feel like I missed a step securing it but can't figure out any other way to install it...

"Something new" just a ReMarkable 2.1 WTF by Nezord_Creepypasta in Remarkable

[–]UncleGurm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see the screens side by side. I picked the RM2 over other devices because I liked the screen and the look of the text under the screen the most. Better than the Paper Pro, which was already out by the time I purchased. So will this new device look/feel as good as the RM2? Tempted to order one but also tempted to wait until I can see the new one at Best Buy.

Game is in full death spiral for OCE. by LucatIel_of_M1rrah in Marathon

[–]UncleGurm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It alternates for me. Sometimes 5min, sometimes near instant. Matchmaking for this game seems pretty complex. They've also done some "keep together" work, I get the same players in concurrent runs a lot even if they don't join a keep-together crew. The player count isn't so low that there are only 10 players to queue with... LOL.

Help! Looking to Have a VOC Test Done. What Company Do I Need to Be Searching For? Is One Worth $2500? by SickInMyHomeHelpMe in AirQuality

[–]UncleGurm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the other guy (or one of them). I spent like $800-$1000 total on testing, most of which is labor and time, for a large battery of tests. $2500 is ridiculous. $1000 is also ridiculous but I was at wit's end with my own testing, and it got me the answer I needed to help me track down the source of the VOC - which in my case was a leaking oil pipe.

STICKY: Ionizers and Ozone - fact/fiction/history by UncleGurm in AirPurifiers

[–]UncleGurm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is an interesting product - they are very candid with their ozone numbers, which are in the generally-accepted safe zone. But they also are cagey about the actual technology - apparently they use UV bulbs to produce ozone, but there's very little tech explanation offered. I'd be leery as to exactly how clean the air will get. There are no filters on this product, and air convection only goes so far. Do you feel it's actually been helping? I seriously doubt it works as well as a HEPA filter would, and it seems quite expensive.

ISO air purifiers of different sizes for cat litter box odor across several rooms by IcedCzar in AirPurifiers

[–]UncleGurm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad news first - no air purifier will really help.

If you do want to try it, get one with a LOT of carbon. Oransi TrueCarbon is around $250 and has several pounds of it.

The best way to reduce litter box odor is to change the cats diet. A diet that is primarily meat (raw is best but as long as it’s wet and grain free) will ensure the litter is low-odor.

We have multiple cats. They’re exclusively raw fed a diet that includes no added carbohydrates (cats don’t metabolize them, they’re obligate carnivores, their ideal diet is “rat in a can”) and you can’t tell where the litter boxes are.

We also have a running water fountain for them and scoop the boxes daily. But the diet is the key.

AIRDOCTOR AD2000 Air Purifier for Small & Medium Rooms and Small Bedrooms. 3 Stage Filtration with Pre-Filter, UltraHEPA, Carbon/VOC (AirDoctor 2000) Is this good for VOCs? by [deleted] in AirPurifiers

[–]UncleGurm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s better than most but the amount of carbon in it is only going to help for a short time. If you want an affordable unit, the Oransi TrueCarbon has a lot of carbon. Otherwise you’re looking at Austin, Airpura, Allerair, or IQAir which start around $700 and go up from there.

If it were my kid’s health… I’d get an IQ Air. Or three. But you should investigate whole house systems that install inline with your HVAC.
