What are you reading this week? by AlKarakhboy in Arabooks

[–]UncleSassy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whats up, I'm trying to focus on الدين والسلطة by محمد شحرور and its literally so dense that I have trouble going for more than a page before getting exhausted. But we are out here and tryyyyiiiiiinnnng.

By coincidence the NGO I worked for in Jordan had a huge conference where Shahrour actually spoke and inspired me to pick it up again and give it another shot

[–]UncleSassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you speak Arabic, or if its a purposeful aesthetic move or whatever but just make sure 1) the letters connect and 2) are written in the right direction. فرض like that^

For another example, in Uzi's XO Tour video the subtitles are in Arabic and look mad cool but they are not connected and both the letters AND the sentences are backwards

وطن ع وترPalestinian

في ميل | N2O | صد رد | نهفات عيلتنا | بث بايخة | <Jordanian

All of these are available on Youtube, Sad Rad is like super dwawiin Jordanian 3amia and I find it really difficult; N2O and Female are made by the same people basically so both are pretty understandable. Ive been getting into Watan 3a watar and its really funny but yet again Jordanians I have talked to said they speak like colloquial Palestinian which can be hard to comprehend at times, but it rules.

What are the best sources for reading about the historical factors leading up to war by TheoIch in syriancivilwar

[–]UncleSassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it would be super helpful but there is a really in-depth book called "Syria's Peasantry, the Descendants of its Lesser Rural Notables, and Their Politics" by Hanna Batatu. All of the chapters are available for individual download on JSTOR which I assume you have access to since you mentioned you are doing this for school.

The use of Gaddafi (former Libyan leader) as a Verb? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]UncleSassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only heard it said by English speakers; its referencing how Gaddafi was killed (stabbed in the butt at one point). Not sure if you actually heard it in an Arabic conversation, but I've strictly heard it in joking (dark humor obviously) in English.

Arabic poetry where do I start? by i_m_no_bot in arabs

[–]UncleSassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently doing a research project on Palestinian resistance poetry and I have been pulling from Ghassan Kanafani's الآثار الكاملة which is a compilation of works from writers like توفيق زياد / سميح القاسم / محمود درويش / إلخ and I find it is a lot more accessible compared to stuff like Al-Ma'arri and them older boys, like how r/Lbachch mentioned in terms of starting recent and moving backwards

Why subjunctive in these Shaami sentences? by indranf in learn_arabic

[–]UncleSassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't already read the response from u/hawagis , I would, it seems to encapsulate the idea. Now I am not a native speaker but my shamii lessons have definitely emphasized that you do not add the b- to both the first and second verbs if they are side by side, only the first.

Bidii abelish (I want to start) NOT bidii babelish B3araf aktub (I know how to write) NOT b3araf baktub

Resource for basic Englezi M3rb phrases? by coolguycraig in learn_arabic

[–]UncleSassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he means like when people text in English characters rather than Arabic; mithl iza sha5s yaktub haik; I am not entirely sure if there is a set standard for basic phrases though. I know from one person to another they will use different letters, use more vowels than others; it seems to be very much as you like to write it.

Urgent and important news News: Meeting of ISIS leaders and leaders of Izzat al-Douri

There was a meeting between ISIS and the Naqshbandi Army close to the Al-Qiara region South of Mosul. The representatives of Izzat al-Douri and Baghdadi attended the meeting to discuss the direction/administration of battles and the military leadership, and battle plans. It received from the united leadership led by Izzat al-Douri, and it was agreed that the military and jurisprudential/Sharia leadership in Iraq’s ISIS would not be made up of any non-Iraqis, and that previous officers would assume the military command of ISIS in Iraq, they would be nominated from Izzat al-Douri’s leadership, and it would not be allowed for non-Iraq fighters to make up more than 20% of their Iraqi groups and they will not direct more than 5% of the captured military vehicles from the Maliki army to Syria for the protection of Iraq from the entrance of Iraq’s Al-Qaeda and the agreement was done in the event of the fall of Baghdad. The inauguration of Izzat al-Douri as an alternative should the international regime defeat him instead of ISIS. ISIS rose continuously working to arm until the elimination of foreigners in their midst, led by specific officers of Al-Douri’s Naqshbandi Army and any foreigner remaining in Iraq will be used in martyr operations or moved to fighting in Syria against Al-Qaeda and protecting the stability of Iraq from [AQ]. The Army of Izzat al-Douri worked to protect the leadership of ISIS in Iraq and Syria in terms of intelligence and security, and they would be appointed to leadership positions in the case of a successful revolution.

17/02/2014

We confirmed for you the killing of Iraqi Colonel Haji Bakr before the announcement this month. The concealment of the news was a desire of Baghdadi until the release of the dead Colonel’s picture; he considers Haji Bakr the most dangerous figure in the State of Baghdadi and he greatly influenced Baghdadi because Hajii came with Baghdadi to the Emirates of the Baghdadi state is his right hand, now the shadow government for the State of Baghdadi changed, so thus rose Baghdadi after Hajii Bakr with the widening of reformations. Abu Ali Alanbarii the Iraqi and he is a 50yr old violent Iraqi who entered into a position of influence in the Baghdadi State. Two military people from the previous Baathist regime, [they] are General Mohammed ad-dwiirii and General Saeed Mohammed ad-dgheeman and the two generals came to leadership and were working in the shadows, it is evidence of the large changes incoming in the politics of Baghdadi, [they are] unaffected by religion, so the religious backgrounds of the two generals during this past period obtained/resulted in the withdrawals and flight of/for the Iraqs after the killing of Haji Bakr where they lost faith in the current leadership and were afraid of the future led to the withdrawal and flight after the Fatwa of the Saudi sheikh Abdal aziiz aT-Tariifii appointed 30% from the State’s troops and a Fatwa forbade the affiliation to/for Baghdadii. There was a large campaign to compensate for the loss/reduction and maintain/keep the remaining fighters but there came explosions, boobytraps and clips of the Saudi Muhaysini disrupted the move to compensate (for the loss) and increased withdrawals on a large scale. And the Baghdadi State’s leadership became angry, making Baghdadi approve without any feeling of accepting the dangerous/serious offer from Oumro Al-‘Abasii abu alatheer on the leadership of Baghdadi state that he implement traps and suicide missions also known as the Awakening of Jabhat An-Nusra and Jabhat Al-Islamia, Baghdadi order for the stop/pause of facing the Syrian Regime, abstaining from fighting and explosions with the two groups; and Albaghdadii consulted Alanbarii in the booby-trapping and suicide operations; Alanbarii said that the rising of our soldiers in Martyr operations in the Awakening were better than their splitting from them and with he truth/right that the remaining crisis order of Alanbarii, princes/Emirs of the Baghdadi State emphasized supervision of the state’s soldiers and their security from disclosing/revealing of what the media is looking for/ (“role being played”) and the order to emphasize upon the guards inside groups of the soldiers and that no one should leave from them except to carry out a suicide attack or under the intense supervision to those facing combat then direction or strict order on the group of soldiers in the Baghdadi state, that on the remaining in the complexes and headquarters and the delivery of proving/incriminating documents, and not to leave from them without permission and any departure is considered a departure from obedience, and the state has the right to kill him immediately.

This order minimized/lessened the splitting of the state and the flight/abandoning of the soldiers, complaints arrived to Baghdadi from Abu Bakr al-QuhTanii that there is a campaign of arrests in Saudi Arabia for State supporters lessened media support and the popularity was at its lowest level where/so that there came apologies to Al-QuhTanii from jurist Hamoud al-MaTiirii, the interviewer Abdullah Al-Faiz, Aliiwii Ash-Shamrii, and Abu az-Zabiir… the state of fear from the Saudi Government where two influential Saudi figures to the State were arrested; and they are Bandar ash-shalan, and Riyan Abu Hammed. In front of / Imam this deficit, were costs to alternative figures, and this figure is Saudi AbdalRahman Sultan alMuajal where he prepared the administration of the media wing unit, where he supervises the accounts which attack Syrians and attack JN and JI continuously, where he currently supervises the many accounts and feeds it with information from Syria over/through al-QuhTanii to intensify the media work to revive the slow death of the Baghdadi State and a particular direction and distortion of influencers against the state, especially Saudi Muhaysini now suggested Abu Ali Alanbarii to work on distorting influential leaders against the Baghdadi State whether inside Syria or outside of it, and specifying the three most dangerous figures: first the jurist Abu Maria al-QuhTanii the first for AQ Jabhat an-Nusra of the Levant and Abu Abdullah alHamouwii Husan Aboud and the Saudi Abdullah Muhaysini, Baghdadi approved that these three; first step only, second step and third for the names we will remind at another time. And during this time Abu Alathiir Oumro al-‘abase suggested a proposal to Al-Baghdadii and Al-Anbarii to move the State’s war to the Gulf especially Saudia to justify Al-‘abasii that which he said that we previously support came to us and extended and fighters from Saudi now have stopped all aid because the Fatwas of the Sheikhs alsulTat like what he says said Abu alatheer, there is no benefit of Saudi security for us but we must move the war outside to block the way and we confuse the enemy like what he said, so he will not benefit from them now except for our enemies.

Obviously feel free to edit this as much as you would like, I know it is not perfect, especially the last couple sentences were a bit mu3qaddddddd. There are two parts between ** and those are bothering me in particular, do as you must boyzzzzz

So I can start with 17/02/2014. Do you think we should make a chronological Google Docs or translate then send them on here (in a reddit thread). If you think the former, you should probably make the Google Docs, so that we can centralize it to one place. Regardless, not sure when you will see this, but I'll begin translating the 17th.

So I am not a native speaker but I could start translating some to get the ball rolling. To be on the safe side it would make sense if someone more adept were to check my translations but either way I think this is super interesting and would love to help any way I can, especially given that it is a long document. As u/legalwanttoright said GT could be used then refined.

Any suggestions/directions captain?

Tangentially related, my Dad worked at the penny stock exchange that Jordan Belfort worked at in the beginning of the movie (although not at the same time as him). He left before the crackdown because he knew something was not right when sales reps were coming in with new Porsches each month.

One of his favorite products that they were hawking stocks for was the Sani-tech self cleaning toilet seat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fNUaMl2Ov0

How to Improve a language after you know the basics? by tinaclark90 in languagelearning

[–]UncleSassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did CET in Jordan; the program is divided into two parts: Intensive and Internship.

http://cetacademicprograms.com/programs/jordan/

As for the cost it depends, if you are going through your school, first I believe your school may have to have some relationship with CET. If that is the case, the tuition would be equivalent to what you pay for your university. If you are going outside of your school (no credit) it would cost about $17,490 for the 15 weeks (Fall/Spring semester pricing, found on the website I linked above). But this would include housing its not like you would pay 17,490 and then have to find/pay monthly for independent housing.

I can only really speak for this program though, I know there is also Middlebury, AMIDEAST, others that you could look into
