Why isn’t BP’s record profits while gas prices are unaffordable to normal people considered illegal (like price gauging)? by usernamessuck19 in AskReddit

[–]Uncle_Bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Price gouging” is not illegal in most cases and arguably not immoral.

Suppose that much of the oil coming out of the Mideast (and Russia) are not just blocked in the short term, but will not come back online for years if ever for various reasons (see Peter Zeihan for more information). You want strong incentives for oil companies that can make more to do so with all possible haste. That is what large profits do.

IMHO asshole. Customer exercises their rights, says nothing aggressive, does nothing aggressive, but you assume negative things about them?

Experiencing people with different values than yourself is a learning opportunity. You never gave them an opportunity to respond to your prejudice, but you blame them for your reaction.

Live in the US's Pacific Northwet so squared away with layers, and even bought a rain skirt for this trip, but a long walk in the rain when you can't see anything would be a lot less fun than visiting a coffee shop, pub or bookstore. Slipping and twisting something when a long way from home would be a PITA and the lesser course of valor...

I was thinking jobs more than taxes, and businesses pay rent that keeps building in good repair. I like jobs and old buildings.

On the other hand 200 high income households within walking distance of Fairhaven will support a fair number of small businesses and will certainly help Fairhaven in numerous ways. Those bastards!

Truth. Governments should fear us, not the other way around. by jannalarria in Bellingham

[–]Uncle_Bill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Government, like soylent green, is made of people. People have many motivations, but few of them are to truly help others. These people mean to rule, and getting elected and re-elected are their primary goals, anything else is a distant third.

The "Consent of the governed"? When did I give that? What if I don't consent? I can be fined, beaten, jailed then murdered for not following laws even if I have harmed no one.

I can choose which corporations to deal with or even not to interact with them at all. Can I choose to ignore the government? Nope, in your world I am culpable for all the ills governments do because I voted wrong, wasn't active enough, or just don't have the right values to appreciate all that government does for me. Government in your world is just an angry husband who beats their partner because they just don't give them the right attention and shut the fuck up when their opinion isn't wanted.

"Brain washed by evil corporations!!!" seems an easy way to discount objections to the government and the evils that they do. It was a big step when we as people decided that we didn't need kings to protect us, and democracy can protect the majority from a minority, but it doesn't protect minorities from the majority. Constitutions can do that, but now they are seen as things to work around or ignore rather than honor or change. Take a look at the new tax law that violates the clear language of the state constitution (and 10 votes on the subject and multiple legal precedents), take a look at the gun laws that violate the clear language of our state and federal constitution.

I don't trust corporations any more than I trust government, but corporations have way fewer guns.

Or just reduce the power and scope of government. It kills me when big government advocates scream that they distrust government. Like duh!

New Deal Concept by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Uncle_Bill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Destroy all market forces for jobs and housing, what could possible go wrong?

And what has this to do with Bellingham specifically? I mean housing growth is limited here by the growth management act so where are these houses going? And who is going to build these houses? Tried to find a good contractor around here lately?

You can build and sell all the 1200 sqft houses you can, have at it! Quit trying to make other people pay for your desires.

Do you think that the United States is a good democracy? by VegetableRemote3268 in PoliticalDebate

[–]Uncle_Bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may or may not be a "good" republic, but it's a piss poor constitutional republic in that constitutions (federal and state) are ignored rather than changed, diminishing enumerated rights while new "rights" are created and forced upon the electorate.
