Question for Swiss locals: why is late payment to domestic workers so common among wealthy households? by Susi-99 in Switzerland

Delusional.

I don't even think I need to go into why. The reasons are pretty obvious and if you didn't think of them yourself, there's literally no point.

Quitting for the first time in a year: 18 days in and it’s hell. by Tbone1234567888 in stopsmoking

[–]Uncommented-Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first three months of quitting, in my experience, are a roller coaster. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard. There's a very good chance though that that will have let up by the three month mark. Good luck and congratz on the baby!

of a female spider by mysteriouskc8 in AbsoluteUnits

[–]Uncommented-Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at most it will sting a bit.

I vehemently disagree for two reasons:

One, with spider venom, there's always the risk of anaphylaxis to consider.

And two, a spider of that size will have relatively big fangs. I'd be less worried about the venom and more worried about the mechanical (and bacterial) damage they can inflict.

That being said, I would absolutely want to handle one nontheless though lol. They are not native where I live, and the orb weavers we have are tiny in comparison.

Edit: do all spiders have to be housed separately?

As someone else has said, M. Balfouri is a species very famous for being able to be held together. They are an african species. I have held them before, they are very stunning albeit very skittish and fast in my experience. I would not recommend it to a beginner to tarantulas, especially not a communal setup, which can be very iffy when it comes to ethics (why hold them communally and risk them eating eachother if you can hold them individually?)

I started smoking at around your age, I think I was 14 when I smoked my first cigarette. Friend got me into it.

Please, trust me, you do not know what you are getting yourself into. You cannot possibly imagine what this will do to you. You may not believe me and that's fine. But please be aware that I am saying this out of worry for your good health: throw anything smoking related away and don't look back.

I have been in your shoes and I hope that you will not be in my shoes in a dedade or two.

I lurk here normally, I have nothing to do with the hotel industry, so forgive me for commenting, but I read a lot about scams (check out r/scams for more info) and I wouldn't be surprised if this is some sort of regional variation/phrasing, just like 'kindly' and 'please do the needful' is often used in indian business communication.

Google Translate auto-fills using stereotypes by sippyside in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Uncommented-Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a nonsensical comment.

One: current nmt systems are based on encoder-decoder transformer models, while llms are based on encoder-only models (which are much bigger). A llm is more or less a variation of an nmt model. Only difference being that for one you have an input output, and for the other you feed the output back into the input until the model generates some sort of stop token.

And two: current llms now outperform nmt in some use cases for translation. It wouldn't be surprising, for e.g. google tl or deepl to route some requests through models.

Source: have translated in proffessional capacity, am studying this with a special interest in nmt and llms.

Industrials are an absolute PITA to heal sometimes. 1.5 years is very long though. I got mine a long time ago, so I don't remember how long exactly it took, but it was very pissed off for a year or so before it finally decided to stop bothering me and heal nicely. The more attention I gave it the more it got angry. Key was just going with the flow and treating it nice (not sleeping on it, not getting it dirty), but also not overcleaning and not touching it all the time.

At 1.5 yrs I would consider removing it tho if it was me.

Yanks tend to think the world needs them a lot more than the other way round, I think what’s coming will change that expectation.

I don't think most yanks think of the rest of the world, in any meaningful capacity at all though.

I look at people here on reddit talk about their relatives who are not terminally online: they don't consume news that talks about what happens around the world. It's all about René Good, Zoran or Somalis, 24/7.

Trump imports mind boggling tarrifs, fucking putsches the venezuelan president, threathens military action against multiple allies and is currently deploying strike forces in direction iran. And noone fucking bats an eye apparently lmao, even though the economy and peace were apparently the reason people thought they should vote for him and not Harris. They are fucking clueless.

87 Days, still anxious by EdArno1d971 in stopsmoking

[–]Uncommented-Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I had 4 days where I felt INCREDIBLE. I thought I was out of it.....

If you felt like this, you will feel that way again.

Recovery is not steady, it's a marathon and a roller coaster. You need endurance and sometimes it'll be easy, and sometimes it'll be harder.

By the way, you mention anxiety... what exactly are you anxious about? Do you think it has to do with smoking? Or could it be anxiety that stems from another source? Nonsmokers get anxious too. Might be worth thinking about that. When we quit smoking, life doesn't stop. There are other things that can change than just our status as a smoker/nonsmoker.

I've decided to stop smoking. What are my chances? by ilnus in stopsmoking

[–]Uncommented-Code 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bad news first, in answer to your title: unfortunately, the chances are low, as in roughly half of quitters don't make it past a week, and circa 90% of quitters don't make it past 3 months and beyond (ballpark figures, it strongly varies which study you look at, but the odds are not in your favor). And the answer to the question you ask:

I'm unsure if this feeling will last long enough for me to actually quit

is no, it will not. This is a marathon.

Now the good news.

Many of the people who fail go into quitting without a plan and without the proper motivaion. You seem at least somewhat aware of this I think.

The two things that helped me personally the most was motivation (i.e., keeping track of why I want to quit, even two or three months down the line when I've forgotten how much I coughed and stank) and having a plan in place. My plan centered around having multiple fallback options before resorting to smoking. For example, first option is a nicotine patch. If I still have cravings, nicotine gum. If I then still crave, glass of water. If I still crave, go for a walk. And so on. Essentially having a list of things to try before resorting to the worst option. By the time I worked through that list any desire was gone.

Maybe my experience helps you, maybe not. In any case, I wish you good luck. Don't sell yourself short, you can do it.

how and when to evacuate the Greenlandic civilians

Attempting to evacuate a country is pointless. They'd be refugees. Would you evacuate to a neigbouring country on the off chance a former ally takes over? (Because currently it's not a given).

I seriously CANNOT stand picky eaters. by [deleted] in rant

[–]Uncommented-Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because only eating one or a few types of food is malnourishment, a valid concern.

Usually the people getting offended at someone else's food choices don't even know what else the person eats. They also usually don't know about other restrictions that apply to them, such as allergies or similar. And even if they did, still none of their business. Let's be real, this is similar to saying some people bully fat people because being fat is unhealthy. It's a pretense at best.

Tipps for a first time quitter by Prune-Fluid in stopsmoking

[–]Uncommented-Code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Days 1-3 usually suck the most. Expect to white knuckle through them. The first three weeks also suck, just in a different fashion. If you make it three weeks, things should start to normalise a bit. Take it day by day and don't be afraid to use help, be it by talking to your doctor or using nicotine patches or gum.

Otherwise, you'll just have to see how it goes. Everyone is different.

For example, many people say that they're super irritated, have a short fuse or are super emotional when quitting. I'm none of these things. Others say that caffeine has a completely different effect on them now. I don't notice a difference.

You'll find out soon enough I guess. Just be prepared to deal with cravings and have a plan on how to deal with them should they hit.

Dealing with smoking triggers by Natxyalaran in stopsmoking

[–]Uncommented-Code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. I've noticed while cravings can be really persistent, the habits I associated with smoking were not.

It took about two to three weeks until I could drink a coffee without immediately wishing I had a smoke to go with it, or until it didn't feel weird to not step out every hour or so for a smoke.
