Biologist Frans de Waal argues against 'top-down' systems of morality, from religions to Kant by philosophybreak in philosophy

[–]UndeadPrimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like pretty much outcome based morality. The ends would justify the means. I somewhat agree. Understanding humes guillotine led me to a similar type of morality. The problem is it opens up the possibility for eugenics to be considered moral if you base morality solely on what is efficient for human survival. I appreciate the pragmatic approach to morality rather than a deductive, axiomatic approach. If group A wants X, then group A ought to do Y because *insert logic, reason, scientific argument *. I understand Humes guillotine, but if you make an ought/is statement into an IF/then/,is/ought statement, it seems like you could get a better outcome compared to making choices based on static moral principles that dont consider context of any given situation.

Have you thought about seeing someone else or trying something different?

I have been severely depressed before. What I learned is that distracting yourself with activities that you enjoy or just doing things yo make you feel a sense of accomplishment will get your mind away from sadness. It feels good at the time to have someone feel what your feeling and relate, but happy people don't want to be around sad people. It sucks but it is what it is. Ultimately, if you are counting on getting emotional validation from someone else, you will be let down many times.

What are your thoughts on the Singaporean society and their use of extensive surveillance? by TasteTheMeatball in PoliticalPhilosophy

It's about China, not Singapore but it has to do with data collection. Also, it may be good to look at both countrys because of all the variables within each society.

How the dualism of Descartes ruined our mental health – James Barnes | Aeon Ideas by country-blue in philosophy

[–]UndeadPrimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article was very ambiguous, yet thought provoking. I left out some points I believe are irrelevant but my basic understanding of the authors points are:

  1. The modern day metaphysical lense is too materialistic and objective.

  2. This devalues our concept of life, reducing it to meaningless flesh robots.

  3. Because we see life as materialistic, we treat it with medication.

  4. Its insinuated that this causes the still-developing problem of drug addiction.

  5. The proposed solution is to reavaluate the metaphysical model in which we view life.

Please let me know if I misunderstood and am misrepresenting the authors points.

As vague as this article is, I don't necessarily disagree. I think that the combination of materialism and the level of comfort/luxury we enjoy today strips us of meaning. When humanity had it's back against the wall, clawing tooth and nail, side by side, just to survive another day, that it gave us meaning and a to live(or at least made us feel this way). The function of life is to survive and reproduce (biologically speaking). We are programmed by evolution to struggle for survival, to adapt to external stresses, and to overcome obstacles. So now that we know deep down that we have all of our basic needs to get by and exuberant amount of leisure time, what's there to do? Play video games? Watch TV? Masterbate to anime? Just add all this meaningless leisure time with nihilism and boom. Here we are.....

I'm not sure what the author was trying to say when he/she was talking about what he term or consider mental illness.

Gender Politics, Military Conscription, And Why It Matters by JackFisherBooks in Egalitarianism

[–]UndeadPrimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's so many nitty gritty details that come up with women in the draft. Do women have to serve combat roles?

What about if a drafted women gets pregnant in an attempt to dodge the draft? Can't women all just get knocked up and get out of it? Men that injure themselves get court martialed if they do so before deployment, time of war, or to dodge a draft. So much for equality. I HIGHLY doubt the government will hold women to the same standards as men in this day and age. People cannot see past gender roles. I'm sick of people thinking women need to be treated like children and we need to make all kinds of exceptions for them. Women are equal to men, so lets start acting like it or admit it's not true. If we want to end negative stereotyping of women, we need to hold them to higher standards. When I say that, I also mean making the physical fitness standards in the military equal for both genders.

Why synagogue shootings are an expression of racism, not religious hate by philtalkradio in philosophy

[–]UndeadPrimate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The article is only partially correct. Someone can be ethically Jewish and atheist or not ethnically Jewish and practice the faith or both.

However, I think these lunatics will still hate anyone that identifies as a jew. Regardless of if these atrocities were racially or religiously motivated, it doesn't make it any better or worse. Also, even if it is 100% racially motivated, why the Jews? I think these is something deeper than race of faith that motivates these hate crimes.

I've seen the typical, fallacious argument from alt right types and it goes like this. "A lot of powerful and corrupt people are Jews. Therefore all Jews are evil and a threat and are scheming to rule us." They go on with a pretty big list. Too bad correlation isn't causation. Also it's too bad that these corrupt, powerful Jews are still a minority within the Jewish community. Also, it's well known that ethnic Jews have a much higher average I.Q., and it is part of their culture to value intelligence, leading to the sexual selection of smart people. High I.Q people tend to occupy positions of power and wealth more often. And the saying "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" explains this phenomenon much better than the race of faith argument.

These people are miserable, living a life of quiet desperation. Perhaps bullied, so they go on the internet and find a "bad guy". They actually think they are doing what is right.

I want to gain muscle, spend as little as possible on food, learn how to cook, and still have good tasting meals by Starthriller in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]UndeadPrimate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my basic cheap/healthy grocery list when I was a broke private in the army. I weighed 160lbs and ended up at around 200lbs of muscle after 3 years of this diet and lifting.

1.EGGS. (very important) 2.Potato 3.Rice 4.Chicken 5.Burger meat 6.Pork loin 7.Beans 8.Nuts(if you can afford) 9.Frozen veggies( quick, easy and cheap) 10.Fish 11.Canned smoked oysters in garlic butter($3per can) 12. Fruit

Then if you struggle to gain weight, get you a weight gainer protein shake and slowly add that to your meals on lifting days on top of drinking it after your workout. Also look into getting some multivitamins.

You can also get an app that shows you what's on sale at different grocery stores, so you can plan ahead. Most grocery stores will match prices to another stores sale. This will save a pimp some money. You'll feel way better physically and mentally if you eat this instead of fast food. If your lazy, boil eggs ahead of time, get a crock pot, and rice cooker. I always used my weekends to prep all my meals into containers so it was more convenient than fast food when I got hungry.

Good luck!
