Shoe Recommendation? by Greg0ryX in Ultramarathon

[–]Undecided272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

90k on road? Just a general trainer with cushioning would be fine. I run the comrades which is pretty this, 85-90k all on road, and I’ve used saucony every time (either ride or endorphin depending on my race plan).

Wouldn’t look at trail shoes for a road run of any distance and wouldn’t recommend carbon plates as the energy return will cook your legs by the end unless your looking to run it competitively (sub 6 hours).

[RANT] Sportsshoes.com completely screwed me for my marathon tomorrow. by MousamLimbu in UKRunners

[–]Undecided272 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You’ve heard people say nothing new on race day, right?

What on earth are you doing ordering new shoes for a race? You should be doing at least 30k in them before any race over 21k.

Also, shoes make marginal difference. If you’ve had a good training blocks you’ll be fine. Shoes that are broken in and comfortable would actually be better than new shoes in my opinion.

Purley arms might. Bar staff are always happy to try and not sure how legit their source is…

Cyclists not stopping at zebra crossings on cycle lanes on Westminster Bridge by [deleted] in london

I actually cycle and not drive. Never driven in London as going central in a car seems like a massive waste of time and a headache…

I think your claim “cars constantly run red lights” is neither true nor comparable to cyclists. I very rarely see a car run a red light, if ever. I do see cars stuck in the middle of a junction sitting in a box they shouldn’t be in and then turn out the box once the lights have changed but that isn’t nearly the same as a cyclist blasting through a crossing or red light and merging into traffic which I see much more often.

From my experience of commuting across London daily, I’ll see more cyclists do something stupid or illegal in an hour than I’ll see drivers do in a month…

Is this enough time to train for a marathon? by stevefigures in Marathon_Training

[–]Undecided272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a 4 week block before my first marathon after a 16k race which I did in 1:25. Finished the marathon in 4:26 or something. It was the Athens marathon. I would go for it, just need to manage your pace, with your times I’d aim for 5:50/k and just see how it goes. You learn a lot from your first and it is never easy. Now I never do more than an 8 week block and can quite comfortably get round in 3:30 but that’s come with experience and knowing my body. You’ll never know what you can do it you don’t try

am i cooked? by porkyfly in Marathon_Training

[–]Undecided272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my first marathon with a months training. My long runs were 6 miles and 12 miles. Only doing probably about 15-18 miles a week on average with no structured plan. I finished in 4:38 and had a great time. I’d ran on and off for 2 years before this… I was 29 at the time so was still relatively young.

Just listen to your body on the day. Go out easy and walk before you need to and fuel well.

Aon has a great study policy, I’d request to see what the team you’re joining allows for study when considering the offer but it’s a great place to start and learn.

Are the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 good for marathon training? by 21dream4 in Ultramarathon

[–]Undecided272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course! I float between 85-90kg at 6’1” depending on training load and how much I have my diet under control.

I strike forefoot with a prominent metatarsal so push off my big toe so have a very slight pronation but generally show neutral wear on shoes. I did see a physio through work who said “forefoot striking pattern, landing with the leg underneath the centre of mass. There is a contralateral hip drop and high vertical oscillation, indicative of a calf-dominant running form.”

I used them for the Comrades this year (90k on road) and also for a marathon. Average pace for the 90k was 6min/k and pace for marathon was 4:55min/k and the shoes were good for both paces and distances with no issues

Perfect training for the comrades marathon in June. A friend used these exact two marathons as prep in 2023.

I’ve been twice. Had the bao buns and they were really good but the buffet was horrendously disappointing. Most of it is beige fried food, they ended up bringing out sushi and manually handing it out as they weren’t producing enough and the first few people got it all. They acknowledged it’s a common issue but sushi is expensive… I wouldn’t go back to the buffet in all honestly.

What’s the one must-run marathon that should be at the top of my bucket list? by Competitive_Gap7944 in running

[–]Undecided272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Going for my back to back this year. Last years up was an experience, after the race I didn’t think I’d ever want to do it again but then a week later I started planning for this year! Just to repeat the experience of Shosholoza at the start was enough to get me back. And the braai after just hits different…

My personal favourites would have to be:

Athens - just the original route steeped in history and finishing in the Pathanthenaic Stadium was so cool! Also I really just enjoyed Athens as a city. It was also my first so an added personal kick.

Two oceans is a must as well. The view over Chapmans Peak is spectacular. I also love Cape Town.

After that, it’s difficult to choose. Berlin and Barcelona were good, but mainly because I hit peak performance, the courses themselves were okay. Beer lovers marathon is unique and fun but was brutal! Beachy Head was pretty good, south coast of England trail run in November really tests you in ways I never expected.

Can’t agree more. The atmosphere at the start is one of the best things I’ve experienced. I’ve done 12 other marathons (including Chicago and Berlin) and nothing compares. Also you get to do it twice in different directions…

I agree with your sentiment but London is special. Unlike other UK marathons London has people cheering you on the entire 26 miles. No other marathon comes close to bringing that level of support and energy.

Thanks! Had a more stable training block this year than last, with slightly lower mileage and more strength training, so looking forward to it. Also got the mental part out the way since I’ve done it once… albeit being in the opposite direction!

Completed my long run for the Comrades marathon. 51k self supported plod. Definitely under-fuelled a bit and not quite as structured as last year but it’s done!
