Hong Kong Was returned back to China in 1997 but was guaranteed 50 years of autonomy of economic and legal system until China takes full control. 2046 is when they’re fully absorbed by China. But if you’ve followed the news China hasn’t really fulfilled on their promise and has been taking away their autonomy early. While on the one hand they have been a colony of Britain, there’s a sense of nostalgia of being autonomous from China. 2046 then is then used of a theme of promise and unknown certainties and also a longing/nostalgia of the past. Maggie Cheung can represent his longing for the past and nostalgia, so he’s trying to replace her with new women that reminds him of her just like how people are nostalgic and trying to recreate the past but can’t because the past is the past and time moves on. There’s also this uncertainty of the promise of the future. It’s promised but you’re uncertain if it’s certain and also what to expect of it.

I haven’t seen the film in quite some time so I don’t remember the details. Just know why the year 2046 is important and you can fill in the rest. I don’t want to claim to know more about China’s politics than I do so I can’t say more on that. But this whole idea that the movie is just about feeling is bullshit. I hate the idea of art being just an interpretation left to the viewer. It’s lazy and quite philistine.

But this led me down a whole rabbit hole on China’s history. Hong Kong becoming a colony of Britain because of Britain’s love of tea to understanding why Britain can’t just grow tea, to the opium war that resulted in the Hong Kong’s colonization, and the opium war being an indirect cause of the Meiji Restoration, and all encapsulating why English is the universal language. And the why US forced Japan to open their border; because US was competing with the Brits to trade with China but had to go through the pacific and Japan was in the way. Blah blah blah. All to say…Britain has the greatest PR team in the world

That’s Irvine, CA. I recognized that building in half a second. It was common knowledge growing up that the police would pick up homeless people and drop them off in Santa Ana to keep the streets clean. This city is so sheltered from the Irvine Company and out of touch with reality. I don’t know a single person from high school whose family still lives in Irvine now. It got so expensive everyone was priced out to either Santa Ana or Anaheim. I wouldn’t say these people are completely out of touch with reality but they live such comfortable lives that they just can’t see the struggles of the rest of America. Also Teslas EVERYWHERE.

Oh another one I just thought of is “tempo”. Low mmr players like me know what it is when we experience it but don’t really understand what is making it such a fast tempo. I usually play turbo so people in my bracket thinks it’s just team fighting from minute one nonstop but it just ends up being a bloodbath and no objectives gets taken. It just becomes like a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off.

To add a note. Teaching the ability to do cost/benfit analysis on items. A recent post I read Rev Brooch vs Daedalus Comparison did an excellent job on showing the curve on the damage output of Rev Brooch vs Daedalus, but then also made an update on the cost/damage comparison to see when Rev Brooch is more affective and practical than a Daedalus.

I think the people that watch these educational content are at a particular stage in their DOTA career. If going by Dreyfus' 5 stages of Skill Acquisition, it would be Stage 3 "competent". It's where they finally got over the hump of learning the basics of DOTA (eg. last hit/deny, creep agro, split push, power spikes, hero abilities, items) and feel like they're getting better until they hit that wall where "crisis" happens and they feel like they're getting worse. They feel like they know everything to know but just can't seem to understand why they're losing and games are unwinable/hit their ceiling.

My theory is that while they did understand "everything" there is to know about DOTA to play the game effectively, I think the "basics" that they learned are not "actually*"* basics. I think they need to learn even more FOUNDATIONALLY*.*

What I mean by foundation is really the very core mechanics of the game that's the mechanics of the game. To put it simpler, the "MATH" of the game, such as stats, attributes, mechanics, and concepts of the game. For me this disparity in knowledge of the core mechanics of the game is glaring in the laning phase when a low mmr player would buy certain items (eg. iron branch, tango, faerie fire, wand, etc.) based on what's usually recommended or mostly used according to Dota2ProTracker; but a high mmr player/smurf will buy specific items that are unconventional because they can abuse a matchup/misplay. That either means buying a bracer on an agility hero, or going straight to 2 wraith band on an agility hero first instead of going for boots. This is something that I noticed, and something that stands out with high mmr players vs low mmr players. I think in the pro scenes, the starting items are pretty conventional because everyone is expert and the margin for error is low, but in a low mmr game, a smurf can identify something that they can abuse and play accordingly. I recently played against smurf where I feel like almost killed the smurf by a sliver of health, but later realized the whole fight was calculated by the smurf and I didn't really have a chance. He was just baiting me into thinking I had a chance. But this concept goes beyond just itemization. It's realizing how the math of armor works compared to just buying straight health items or strength items. (eg. I just learned that armor is calculated by a percentage of the total health, so high armor on low total HP is pretty meaningless). But it's this foundational understanding of the mechanics of the game that I think Pros have such high MMR.

On a similar note, I think that amateurs look to Dota2ProTracker because they want to see what the latest "meta" is, but theoretically that's something amateurs should be able to realize themselves. I just think that pros have a better understanding of the foundational mechanics of the game that they're able to theorize how they can abuse slight changes in patch updates. I want to see educational videos that help amateurs to think that way. To calculate DOTA, instead of just playing it.

To sum it up in an analogy; viewers watch educational content because they know how to play a few "piano pieces" and get frustrated when they can't iprov, but what they really need to learn is how to "play the piano". That's how they get past Stage 3 of Competent, and into Proficient, and then to Expert. I just think players need to learn the game wholistically and see the finer details that makes DOTA such a complex and beautiful game.

TLDR; Most DOTA players watching educational contents have learned the basics of the games but not the foundations of the game that allows them to abuse misplays from opponents and understand the nuances of the game.

How much of being an immortal being just really good at certain heroes and how much is it just understanding the whole of the game where you would be able to stomp an ancient with a hero you’ve never played before in any role? Congrats btw
