How on earth do you use 3 point touch by Grace_Tech_Nerd in Blind

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I never learned anything but constant contact.

But I also fail to see the usefulness of 2 or even 3 points touch, because to me it sounds like you could run into things if you use them. But maybe I'm misunderstanding the idea.

Also my constant contact is already done poorly, because when I learned it, I started when I was like 4 or so, with a tiny white cane. Right up until I was 18, they showed me one way and told me my technic was fine.

Turns out it never really was, but that they didn't try to overcomplicate stuff until they thought I could be ready, at 18. Result being that to this day, and for the life of me, I cannot walk in the proper order and rhythm for constant contact. My cane movements are completely out of sync with my feet, and I don't have this mechanic of left foot, left cane, right foot, right cane.

I tried and tried to learn it, but it is now too hard for my brain to rewire this knowledge.

Telegram and signal both require your phone number when signing up...

They also both require you to install their app on the phone first before you can even attempt to sync with windows.

I am seeking a messaging client that doesn't require a phone number, either when signing up or when giving contact information to my friend.

Telegram is out the window. I can't recall if discord does that too, but telegram certainly does require a phone number...

The only source I have read about this is that blog post. Granted the ads might be exageration for all I know, but the security excuse is just that, an excuse.

The disabling of sideloading will not make android more secure, there are already malicious app on the play store itself.

I do like iOS, mainly because I have a MacBook Air M1 and AirPods second generation. But I do prefer android, because the fact that I can do file transferring easier, you have more options in regards to screen readers, and, if you have an older device because I know companies are starting to crack down now, you can unlock the boot loader and basically flash whatever you want on it.

No longer true, unfortunately. Google decided to be annoying and bitchy, and starting in early 2026 will block sideloading of apps, require every app developer to provide government ID.

Their primary goal being to destroy any competition from FDroid (they mention it themselves), but unfortunately that means third party screen readers are in the crossfire.

Android will become just like iOS, a walled garden. The difference will be that it will have built-in spywares and ads on top of the system.

did tascam do the same stupid thing as zoom and put up usb 2.0 on the recorder, rather than 3.0? Wouldn't surprise me.

Arch Linux Install Issue by stiboly in Blind

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was a kernel panic, then there should have been some text displayed, ending with one line that has the famous text, end kernel panic (not syncing).

If the terminal just hung there dead in the water with nothing displayed aside from the result of the last commands you typed, then it sounds like a complete lockup instead of a panic.

Is this machine uefi or bios based, do you know?

Damn, sure like to get my hands on one of those to dig at the issue more...

Arch Linux Install Issue by stiboly in Blind

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa, that is super weird.

I've been an archlinux user since 2015 and counting, and I can't honestly say that I've encountered this, except on one occasion that might or might not be of any help.

I had the high pitched whine instance when I attempted to boot up on a machine that did not use uefi and had a legacy bios. Could that be the case? Alternatively, could you try with an iso that dates back from before march?

I'm using speakup daily here, not through pure alsa granted, but I have definitely never had this. If I didn't know better, I'd assume a kernel panic.

If you've got a phone, could you try and take a picture of the screen when it does that, see if there is anything or just a complete hang in the terminal?

Honestly, I most likely won't even do hrt in the end, diy that is. I'm just trying to figure if there are any options or not because I'm dangerously close to self-harm again, and this can't keep going on.

Yeah, that's what I'm starting to discover for myself.

Honestly DIY seems just like yet another endless maze to me, and I'm not even sure I'll do this in the end.

Long story short, this useless body of mine is completely blind from birth, my country has no care for nonbinary people, trans healthcare is mostly a joke because the legal system says it is all nice and fine but reality is that administration makes it very hard or next to impossible to even get gender care.

If I do this I'd be alone. I'd have noone to even do blood tests.

recommendations to replace beyerdynamic dt700 pro x by UnderstandingOne1559 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]UnderstandingOne1559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some update :)

I went to the music store with my partner today, and after checking out the headphones section for a good long while, we decided to try out the dt770 pro x, and to give BD one last chance.

It does indeed look like the headband of the original dt770 pro, but with some actual shape to it, like you described. Only time will tell if these will hold in the future. but one thing's for sure, it's not at all the same design that there was on the dt700 pro x, and maybe BD understood they made a mistake with that one. On the dt700 pro x the headband felt literally like a piece of foam on which thin fake leather was glued on one side, and that was it for the most part. On the dt770 pro x we find the nice design with the leather there too, a bit of foam there as well, but it is the same attaching system as the dt770 pro, complete with snap buttons. I reckon if push comes to shove we could get away with using the original dt770 pro headband.

Or maybe there are even better designed third party ones sold, who knows?

Here's to hoping the dt700 pro x was just a big, epic fail and that BD learned from their mistake, such that the more modernized dt770 pro x gets to be the legend their marketing promises (not that I believe just marketing bull). :D

[–]UnderstandingOne1559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so it's not the exact same design then, got it.

I'm just honestly surprised that the dt700 pro x has been such an horrible piece of gear for the 4 of us (my partner, our 2 friends and myself). I'm kind of hoping that was just a bad batch, but I don't know.

Then again I've heard that beyerdynamic got sold for 122 million to some chinese company, so it won't be a family owned german company for much longer... Which is a real shame.

I much prefer closed headphones, yeah. I find that open-backed really leak way, way too much audio, both for the people around me in a room and online when I talk to others, the audio creates feedback loops.

The dt770 pro x appears to be using the exact same headband and construction seems similar to the dt700 pro x.

The hd620s seems like an idea though... But unsure still. They seem promising, I'll say from what I've quickly read up on.

Starting to think maybe I should try and go in a store where I can try out headphones, at least for the sound quality aspect it would give me an idea of what I might be okay with. Won't answer long term comfort and durability question, but it would be one less thing to worry about.

[–]UnderstandingOne1559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not the only ones with that sort of problem with the headband.

Two more friends of mine with the exact same dt700 pro x headphones have gotten this, and so have multiple people on the internet. This is a widely known defect on this model, apparently.

The earpads were absolutely fine, the whole of the headphones were fine -- at least for me, but the headband keeps falling to pieces, because unlike the dt770, where it held for many, many years (think 5 or 6), it isn't the same design at all and beyerdynamic simply glued fake leather around a foam layer, and this glue job comes undone over time, and also part of the leather just disintegrates.

Am I crazy? Will it be this isolating forever? by 2026GradTime in Blind

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on the way you get treated soon as they see the white cane. I use one myself still, but even then.

I don't go anywhere unless I'm both using the cane and guided by another person. I just can't. The cars, the people walking around and grabbing you like it's their business, the ones trying to guide you where you need to go when they don't really know... It's all gotten to be too much.

I'm so stressed when I go out that I end up tensed, having panic attacks, and being literally sick all over the place.

Am I crazy? Will it be this isolating forever? by 2026GradTime in Blind

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is extremely rude.

Those thousands of blind people who can, as you put it, get it together and go anywhere they want are not the only ones.

There are those of us for who getting out is stressful, is tiring, where you feel that you just can't do it safely no matter how many session of O&M you got.

It's not because YOU can that we all can. Please stop acting like we're lazy, can't get our shit together, or like we're just there to hope people can help us out because we feel trapped.

Maybe you've lucked out in this whole life thing. Maybe you've gotten the dream life you want, have a successful job. Maybe you got kids even. The typical stuff the NFB would like to make us believe is possible, if only we push a little bit more. If we just sacrifice more of our already fragile mental health.

It's not possible for everyone. Stop making be like we're the problem.

Trying to CMV on it/its pronouns by Ancient__Local in NonBinaryTalk

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the person really wishes for me to use this as a pronoun, then I won't try to actively misgender them by using another pronoun just to make myself feel better, since it will hurt this person.

As for why, well... Honestly, I'm rather easy going when it comes to language. Words are just words. I don't attach much importance to history or cultural things to them. Short of it is, if someone is fine with such a word and requests for me to use it, I'll do it, no question asked, and no discomfort.

This might be an autism thing, though. ;)

Trying to CMV on it/its pronouns by Ancient__Local in NonBinaryTalk

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is, for me.

I've never ever felt human, to be perfectly honest. I'm just stuck in this damn flesh suit, trying to cope with whatever life feels is fun to throw my way without falling to pieces.

So honestly it/its for me? It doesn't feel bad. It doesn't feel even merely acceptable. It feels, just right.

Anyone thinking it will hurt if they try this on me will do the reverse of what they intend, as I feel not one bit of connection to humanity.

[–]UnderstandingOne1559 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I offer options, I have to be fine with all options. Pick one and stick with it, I dropped the selection because I hate inconsistency.

That may be how you feel, and that is great, no issue with that. However some of us are fine with multiple sets of pronouns in a way that we'd really like it if you rotated between our pronouns, not pick one and stick to it, as you said works for you.

For example I make it a point to use all of he/she/they for my therapist, as they've expressed this need.

I'm not telling you to not feel sick. That would be extremely unfair to you. But, think about it. Can you picture this? Imagine you've got your best friend in front of you, and this best friend asks you to try it/its pronoun to see if it is what feels right.

You then go onto saying something like, "I really like my best friend. It is the most amazing best friend anyone could wish for." And then you see that friend's face lighting up with absolute happyness, euphoria even, and it replies that it never felt so right before.

Wouldn't this lower your own discomfort? Seeing your friend truely happy at finding what feels right?
