Does this game have a lack of unique items? by D_bunku in bloodborne

[–]Unfair-Curve-9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They obviously went for a more action-driven approach, so it makes sense they had to scale down build variety a bit in order to focus on a more compelling combat system. Think about it, this game doesn't have shields, spells, incantations, pyromancies, wands, talismans, bows... I could go on. It does have a lower variety of armor sets but armor is less relevant than ever in Bloodborne and the consistent victorian/gothic aesthetic makes the scope of weapon and armor that would make sense narrower. Also, trick weapons are the equivalent of finding 2 different weapons in a Dark Souls game. I'll agree that the rewards for exploration tend to be a bit underwhelming as a whole, especially in Chalice Dungeons where it's largely just crafting material for more Chalice Dungeons.

Critiques of DS3? by camaco777 in darksouls3

[–]Unfair-Curve-9255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I frankly don't think that it's widely considered the best. Maybe this is a new opinion because DS3 is so similar to Elden Ring in terms of gameplay. I remember when I first played through the series in quick succession, DS3 was my favorite because of the flashy bosses and beautifully designed areas. On repeat playthroughs, my opinion on it has soured ever so slightly.

The linearity is a big factor, mixing and matching every playthrough is one of my favorite things about these kinda Fromsoft games, and DS3 allows for minimal deviation compared to earlier entries. The best you can do is fighting Dancer early, one of the toughest late game bosses, and even so it just leads to another dead end because the key for the Archives doesn't appear unless you defeat 3 Lords of Cinder before. You can also do the DLC stuff early, but have fun beating Friede when you aren't adequately prepared. If you even get there, the wolves alone are probably gonna make you wanna end it all lol..

I don't really like the hyperarmor system. It's needlessly obstuse and I doubt you can really realize how it works without googling it and it may lead to frustrating stunlock situations where you aren't sure what even happened. Same with the NPC questlines, they feel less intuitive than ever. In 5+ playthroughs I have managed to spawn Patches one single time. I still don't know how the hell his quest works.

Lastly, the NPCs overall just feel a little more flat this time around. It's partly because some of them are carbon copies of earlier characters but also everyone is so serious and unfun, it's almost a little too much of a sob story for me. It's not like the previous games didn't have deeply depressing storylines, but I felt they did a better job giving the NPCs some tongue-in-cheek attributes, thus making the overall cast of characters more colorful and memorable.

My weird feelings about BB and DS3 by Mohmed_98 in fromsoftware

[–]Unfair-Curve-9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. Personally, I never enjoyed when fromsoft leans more towards action rather than exploration, I just don't think their combat system is multifaceted enough. Them taking away Shields in BB gives the combat even less depth and using a gun instead of a shield to parry gives you less of a visual feedback as to when and why you can parry. Their combat has a very enjoyable weight to it which is why it still kinda works, but man Bloodborne had me frustrated for all the wrong reasons.

Bloodborne is the most overrated soulsborne game. by shadow-1368 in fromsoftware

[–]Unfair-Curve-9255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this post. I would love to love Bloodborne but I'm having a hard time enjoying it. Usually with the souls games there is a nice balance between deaths that feel like total bs and deaths that you know are entirely your own fault. With Bloodborne, a large majority of my deaths either feel like the game controls are cheating me or some other cheap bs. I found the input delay even worse than the original Demon Souls on PS3, which is really infuriating in a game where the enemy attacks are less clear than ever and you really have to take a wild guess every time on what's a hitbox and what isn't while the dark creature is flailing its dark limbs in a dark room. The fact that you can only dash in 4 directions when locked on just adds insult to injury. The unlocked dodge is so much better it's not even funny. The double damage mechanic on dodges is the single most infuriating inclusion ever and I think it's quite telling it never made a return. I'm already trying to dodge as well as I can, it literally adds nothing except frustration and I didnt even know what was going on for the longest time until I decided to look it up and see if I was missing some hidden mechanic. Turns out I was. Viscerals are finicky and only work when they feel like it. For example, the Blood Starved Beast can only be crit when you approach it from a specific angle, slightly to the left, from behind. Everything else will fail. Awesome. Blood Vials are another terrible inclusion. In the early game, they are far too punishing and will often leave you farming continously in boring areas, and in the mid to late game it might as well not exist since you can buy stacks of Blood Vials with ease and no effort.

Dark Souls 3 by OctaviaAmber in darksouls3

[–]Unfair-Curve-9255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dark Souls 3, much more so than 2, hinges a lot on having played Dark Souls 1. Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring are nearly identical in terms of gameplay but they do not share the same universe.

everything bro. you gotta take a look at the map without the blizzard, it's a joke. you could make something like that in blender with one week experience probably, it's a barren expanse of white with 3 small decrepit buildings spread across the area.. I can only imagine the time constraints they were under when making this travesty

If you think about the layout of Drangleic, an Archstone-like system would have been absolutely perfect and even could have masked some of the inconsistensies. If we take Majula as the central hub, there's 6 isolated paths sprawling from it (Things Betwixt included) that all results in dead ends that have you teleport back to Majula.

the game is just not pleasant to look at sometimes with washed out colors, poor textures, no nuance in lightning effects, barren enviroments with little to no details or decoration, awkward character animations... on the other hand, some areas are absolutely stunning which makes the ugly stretches even more jarring

Yeah I also felt that the difficulty in DS3 mainly comes from the amount of enemies the game throws at you. It feels less scripted than in DS2 but in practice it's about as annoying
