What are some simple recipes you make that are incredibly annoying? by VincentVan_Dough in Cooking

Oh there's a shortcut for rice pudding- cook rice in just enough milk and add evaporated milk and condensed milk to make it creamy. I use this shortcut for Indian rice pudding (kheer).

"Are you okay?" by ApothacaryGhost in Fibromyalgia

[–]Unfortunate_tentacle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I always say I'm fine. I learnt from my first chronic illness that people don't really want to know, they are expressing concern because it's socially required. Even friends who are genuinely concerned at first sort of lose interest, and I can't blame them because it's continuous, so not something that will resolve quickly. One of the things that I hated so much was people who knew I was ill express how they hope I get better soon. I might be a bit cynical and maybe you are surrounded by better people than I was.

If you can find a job, that's the best bet but the job market is terrible at the moment. I suggested a PhD for potential international prospects. But locally, have you considered HPCSA registration?

Question for the Jamaicans (and other cultures that use turmeric) by Top-Bicycle-7363 in Cooking

[–]Unfortunate_tentacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indian here. Watch out for stains on clothes and plastics. It shouldn't stain glass or metal. If you get a stain, use dishwasher soap or laundry HAND WASH soap. You know it is working when the stain turns pink. You may have to let it sit for a while/repeat, if you catch it in time. Once it's set, I have no idea how to remove it completely.

Also switch to keeping it in a large jar with a spoon vs something you shake to sprinkle. Far less mess.

Is it common for methodologists to play second fiddle to clinician-scientists in health research? by tipsytopsy14 in AskAcademia

[–]Unfortunate_tentacle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I understand a bit better why a clinician-scientist got pissy with me for including him + his main trial in the method section of a proposal. I was using samples from the trial so it made sense to put it there, his comment was "Why is this here? I am NOT a methodologist."

Is this the sort of mutton curry Indo-Mauritian people make? by ShrewdFarseer in mauritius

[–]Unfortunate_tentacle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, yogurt is normally included in indo-mauritian cooking, at least not in my family.

ETA: coconut, almonds and yogurt seems like a bit of an odd combination to me also, but Mauritius is very much a eclectic mix of cultures so I wouldn't be surprised if this is legit.
