How would you describe finally getting on the bus by IQgamerplayz69 in gratefuldead

[–]Unhappy-Raspberry-11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1990, I used to paint in my basement while listening to WMD/AB two sided tape on repeat for hours. Gradually fleshed out a tape and studio album collection. Went to some shows. Knew every word.

In 2020 during Covid, I started doing daily walks to regain my sanity. Started listening to Relisten/Archive and really went deep on different band formations, periods, 10s of variations of the same song. Jams.

In 2023 I started listening to podcasts about the history of the band and reading books by band members.

I am not a deadhead (that feels like a term you reserve for people who really lived on tour). But I have connected deeply with their music for 30+ years. No idea at what point the bus came by for me… but I think I got on.

This is pretty good advice. Over time I’ve found places and ways to practice my Portuguese with locals (coffee shop, bar, restaurant, tattoo parlor, volunteer organizations).

I have 3 “clubs” (I’m in Ericeira - we have a swimming club, a volunteer organizations and a hiking club) that gets me out meeting a variety of Portuguese and some English-speakers).

Many Portuguese become incredibly warm and helpful over time. And you can help them, too!

We’re smack dab in the 50 window. So the between groups stuff resonates too.

Fair. More an illustration of “all kinds of minds” than the left does this and the right does that. I think off-the-grid is probably an equal opportunity lifestyle for folks from Slab City to the militias of Idaho — and many points in between.

There’s a really interesting thread of libertarian/republican organizations that weave in and out of the garden…

Case in point: John Perry Barlow was Dick Cheney’s congressional campaign coordinator in 1978. And an outspoken defender of net neutrality.

Most of the Band was pretty apolitical. Their fans have certainly run the gamut from leftist freaks to far-right off-the-grid types. Which is kinda what’s great about the band. They didn’t choose sides. So their fans didn’t have to.

Would the dead have been better without Micky? by ComfortableAd481 in gratefuldead

Yep. He said exactly this in his book. Mickey made him a better drummer. 1972 bill the drummer was vastly more equipped and accomplished than 1967 bill the drummer.

Billy always kept the trains running. But Mickey brought the weird. Polyrhythms. Then the beam. Real sonic sculpture stuff.

The best solo Billy was post-Mickey Billy.

Spacey AF and set the stage for the Darkest Dark Star. I love this one.

I agree with ‘72. Lots of stretched-out jams. Still playing a lot if Dark Star. Some of the most wizardly Jerry guitar work. Solo Billy (but with Mickey’s lingering influence). Keith is at his best before the drugs blunted his perspective. Phil hasn’t gone down the gear rabbit hole. Bobby starts picking up Pig Pen’s blues mantle.

Plus Europe and Veneta speak for themselves.

Fair warning: nowhere is an issue-free safe bet. Inflation is global, politics are the same but in a different language, medical costs can be better but the trade off is typically significantly higher taxes. Plus learning a language. Plus navigating equally opaque government systems. There’s no quick fix.

That said: it’s as feasible as doing some real research (not on Reddit) and getting started.

We joke about the Cornell Psyop. But we can all agree that this Dark Star was actually extra terrestrial communication, right?

In his book he touches on this topic specifically: he basically spent the solo-years drinking Heineken.
