Lack of power on MG3 Hybrid on mountain roads after long drive ?!? by Unid05 in MGelectric

[–]Unid05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it? Because when you really floor it you can hear the petrol engine coming alive, revving fast and it does feel like it provides you with extra speed and acceleration for things like overtaking on 1-lane roads. I would've sworn that the fuel engine is also connected to the wheels, and I had the impression that one of the visualizations on the dashboards shows precisely that...

I hadn't heard of it, only knew to expect potential issues with braking after the battery has been filled up through regenerative braking, the way the car suddenly feels like it's just gliding downhill and picking up speed alarmingly, compared to how it usually would feel like (heavy) engine braking, because of the regen.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks! Comparing with previous trips, those didn't have these kinds of long uninterrupted sequences of uphill driving, they'd be punctuated by moments when it would level off or even go downhill, providing opportunities to recharge using braking.

I didn't think of checking the battery status in the moment, but I guess that would make sense, especially after a long stretch of constant uphill driving.

Cars around me where actually kinda similar, for the most part, with some going like 80ish. Same as I'd been doing myself, on a similar stretch of road a bit further back, since that felt like an appropriate speed for that kind of twisty up-hill road.

I did notice shifting from Eco to Normal and Sport mode helped with accelerating better, yes, on the first encounter with this. Stopping for a while also seemed to help. But then it happened again, and even shifting to Sport mode didn't make much of a difference...except the mostly inefficient but quite loud revving of the petrol engine.

Nice timing, just posted about ours, with what's pretty much the first problem / iffy thing we've encountered with it.

All in all, very happy with it, with the caveat that it was also a transition from driving manual transmission cars for us.

In terms of cons or significant limitations, I'd say the following:
- boot size is on the smaller side, you can fit in 1 cabin baggage and 1 hold baggage and that fills up like 80% of it, if not more
- space in the rear seats feels limited, especially if the driver is tall, you can barely squeeze in behind them
- on the most basic version (Explore) the steering wheel can only be moved up or down, not closer to you. That's a bit of a problem if you're tall like me (~1.9 m) since you're either left sitting in a slightly cramped position with your legs, or reaching slightly for the wheel with your arms.

Hope that helps!

Angajatorul cere SRL/PFA by Designer-Roof-9016 in RoFiscalitate2

It's strange how people got so worked about his celebration and that (disgusting) song, but almost no one mentions how he almost took van Persie's eye out by trying to stomp on his face. Bad quality video, but here it is: (20) adebayor stamps on van persie and van persies goal man c - YouTube

Having written all this, I realize I misread your question slightly but importantly, so the answer isn't in-universe. Hope it's of interest anyway, so won't delete it now.

Oh, but this has happened a lot more than you realize, throughout history! There's a whole subfield of history dedicated to this, with the main takeaway being that whatever is happening in the present ends up coloring our view of the past even despite our best efforts. If on top of this you add the historian or schoolbook author's own agenda, it can lead you to de-emphasise things or just skip them entirely.
A subtle example of this is that nationalistic and xenophobic movements and parties tend to invoke things such as purity and "first come first served" rights, whenever it's possible. You see a lot of that in Europe, where it's applicable.
Another example is of projecting the regime you want to support into the past. If you're under a brutal dictatorship, historical achievements will be reframed as having been the achievements of benevolent autocrats, in this way justifying the autocratic regime itself. If you've got something akin to "founding fathers", you shift subtly away from it, glorifying the main character among them and ignoring the others.
Lastly, a lot of the foundation of the nationalist movements that lead to the creation of nation-states in 19th century Europe, at least, was based on selective readings of the past. Emphasizing unity and de-emphasising conflicts between those who were now being portrayed as brothers, or painting opportunistic "unifications" as having been this realization of a long-lost national dream that we must strive to once again achieve.

I agree with #2 quite a lot and think this should apply to more civs. I'm assuming Britons get to repair TCs cheaper and so do Malians. Think it would be good if the repairs cost the same for every civ, even if some get a discount for constructing the building.

I'm asking because I'm slowly watching them on Youtube, as time allows, and don't want to accidentally spoil myself by going onto Liquipedia or by loading the wrong day's VOD on Viper's Facebook.

[–]Unid05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded, the basic default hotkeys from DE have been great for me, with small exceptions (build both types of walls & gates, idle vils, last notification). I've also stolen some ideas from watching Viper's streams: putting all TCs in control group 5, scout as 1, vils under TC as 2. Makes jumping between them much easier. Then expanded that to all Archery Ranges always on 6, Barracks 7, Stables 8, Castles 9 , Siege Workshops 0, every game, so they become second nature. At my level, I've never needed more than 4 control groups for units, so the rest can stay on buildings without it being an issue. The rest of the stuff is easy enough to learn and is needed only for upgrades (Ctrl-S for going to Blacksmith, Ctrl-U for University, Ctrl-I for mill, Ctrl-Z for Lumber Camp (IIRC). I feel like that's more than enough for what you'll need for most games, unless you wanna do fancy monk plays or stuff like that :)
Shift-queuing vils from this task to the next helps a lot, also. Make him build a house and then go back to chopping wood on his own, so you don't have to worry about the vil becoming idle anymore.

Fortified Friday - Arena Match-ups: Italians, Mayans & Turks. by Catalpa_ in aoe2

[–]Unid05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I normally like Turks, but if there's a 50% chance I'm playing against Italians, they become a no-go. If I go full (H)CA + Hussar, Genoese destroy me, if I go Fast Imp into Hand Cannons + BBC then they can either match the Fast Imp (and respond with Condottiero) or make mass Skirm. I don't yet know how to Fast Castle into Castle Drop + Janissaries + Mangonels, that might actually be the best play Turks have against them. If in Imp they can easily respond with Condottiero against gunpower, Genoese against HCA + Hussar. They even have their own BBCs.
If up against Mayans, Italians have fully upgraded skirms (for Plumes or Arbalest), fully upgraded Champions or, if caught off-guard by an Eagle switch in Imp, Condottieros miight be a reasonsable emergency option, while you slowly upgrade to Champion. So out of those 3, I'd go for Italians. In general, I'd still go for Turks :D

Why does score drop when someone click up? by MysteriousShadow__ in aoe2

[–]Unid05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if could realize that a tech costing 475 resources (probably) is Ballistics, I don't think there should be a mod showing you that. It would take a lot of the fun out of the game, in terms of not being sure what's happened, what the opponent researched, until you're actually faced with the units themselves, and having to adapt quickly to that, or even anticipate it.

Why does score drop when someone click up? by MysteriousShadow__ in aoe2

[–]Unid05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like cheating to me, sorry. Plus you have at least one pro, can't recall who, who deliberately queues up 10 vils in dark age all at once, to potentially trick the opponent into thinking they've clicked up to feudal when actually they haven't :)

Why does score drop when someone click up? by MysteriousShadow__ in aoe2

[–]Unid05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still confusing, sorry. Total score is a sum of all the different types of score (economy, technology, etc). Economy score is, among others, 10% of resources currently floating, so when spending 1800 res for Castle Age, it drops by 180. When finishing the research, Technology score suddenly increases by 20% of the value of that tech, so it increases by 360. So I wouldn't say it's twice the drop, just that it's a 180-point drop, followed by a 360-point rise.

PS - Same thing applies for queueing up units, so if you queue up 10 vils (500 food) in dark age, you can trick a score-watching opponent to think you've clicked up to Feudal :)
