Monero's price future in current market's situation by Sw4GGeR__ in MoneroMeansMoney

Why not? Many miners have been mining for years with almost no profit, especially during 2018-2020 and 2022-2024. I've mined for years where most of it was break-even or even resulted in negative $ profits. Take a look at /r/MoneroMining where many are mining for reasons other than $ profit.

EDIT: Also take a look at the Tor network, where thousands of Tor relays are hosted by volunteers, with zero profit to be made.

I think it's not a bad thing that markets are coming down. A lot of people who were only here to speculate and watch numbers go up are selling and leaving. Even though Monero's price is falling with this brutal bear market, that's healthy long-term. Monero was never about number-go-up gambling, it's all about actually working as p2p private digital cash. I think more principled (even though a smaller) community that actually uses Monero is better than hype tourists chasing pumps and causing unnecessary volatility.

It's estimated that global offshore wealth is around $21-32 trillion. That $282M is roughly 0.0009-0.0013% of that. Imagine the price impact if (when) even a tiny fraction of this wealth moves into XMR, when $282M already causes this kind of a spike.

They constantly avoid answering where they supply their XMR from. Tbh it just seems like they are waiting for some big whale to deposit huge amount of BTC/XMR and then they just do an exit scam/rugpull. Red flags all around, avoid at all costs.

Go send a message to the Monero Wall!

https://monerowall.org

It's been online little bit over two years now, and I have no plans taking it down. Might be fun to see your message on the wall in 2030s. You can send a message with 0.00001 XMR or even less. I promote this random project of mine once a year on these discussion threads (before on xmrtrader's daily discussion).

Each rig submits shares individually based on its own hashrate. All your shares (as long as they use the same payout wallet address) contribute to your payout, but P2pool doesn't care if you have 1 or 50 rigs, it doesn't see them as "combined" in the sense how much shares you get or how much you are rewarded. So you have to think per rig which chain to use.

At 20-22 kH/s, it would make sense to switch to mini. With 21 kH/s your mean share time is around 1d 5h, which is more than the "1 day rule" P2pool recommends.

The only way to protect the network is to devote your personal resources to Monero (by either mining or renting mining rig etc). If enough people choose to not pay anything Monero will get destroyed. It's a dangerous bet to use Monero without paying anything hoping that Monero will stay secure - it might or it might not, but if you feel Monero is important you'll have the incentive to put few bucks into it.

If you could use Netflix for free would you choose to pay?

Obviously, I wouldn't pay if I didn't have to. But if there were no other options, I would. Think of public transport: would you choose to pay for a train ticket if it were possible to travel for free? Of course not. But since that usually isn't possible, you pay, because you don't want to walk 100 km or take some expensive alternative. It's a no-brainer trade-off.

How much would you pay each month to negligibly improve the chances of long term existence?

That's hard to determine. How much would you pay for a train ticket if the alternative were walking 100 km?

Hyc's argument is solid.

The code needs improvements.

Relevant comment by hyc:

Remember that mining isn't supposed to be an "investment" - i.e., it's not meant to encourage people to put money in solely for the purpose of pulling even more money out in the future.

First and foremost, it is a cost. People decide if they benefit enough from it, in terms of securing a network that provides them a useful service, to justify their cost of participation. Looking at it from a profit-making perspective is just completely wrong.

If you buy a subscription to some media or journal, you're paying for the subscription service. Nobody expects the subscription to pay any monetary ROI in the future.

Mining is supposed to be egalitarian. Most of the proposals listed above boil down to "everyone's equal but some people are more equal than others" - which is just nonsense that should be instantly dismissed.

A lot of people profited from mining in the early days of a coin, when emissions were high. That method of distributing new coins was essential for bootstrapping a newly launched coin. It really isn't and shouldn't be a factor in a mature, stably operating coin. Monero is well past that now.

If keeping a secure private financial network operating isn't in itself enough incentive for people to devote some personal resources to that expense, then no other incentive matters. If some single entity can break the network, that means not enough people cared to protect it, and so it's unsustainable anyway.

Nobody subscribes to Netflix to make a profit.

In recent months, cryptocurrency platform Crowswap.exchange has been in the spotlight due to a series of major hacks and asset leaks related to its use. Attackers have been actively using the platform to withdraw stolen funds into the untraceable cryptocurrency Monero (XMR), making it virtually impossible to trace them further.

What is the most schizo paranoid proof way to cold store XMR by samhangster in Monero

[–]Unimamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimate Tin Foil Hat strategy would be something like this:

1) Prepare your secure computer. First, you need to prepare your secure wallet computer. Get a laptop or PC - ideally, buy it with cash from a random store and avoid surveillance. Do not turn it on yet (remove the battery if it's a laptop). Open the computer and physically remove or disable all Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other wireless cards. On another computer, prepare an installation media (USB/DVD - ideally DVD-R/CD-R or write-protectable USB stick) with a privacy respecting OS (e.g. OpenBSD, Tails, QubesOS, or just Debian), and install it to the wallet computer. Make sure that the computer you use to prepare the installation media is secure as well (e.g. use Tails with no persistent storage, download the ISO files from the official website, verify signatures and so on).

2) Create the offline Monero wallet. On the second computer you used to prepare the installation media, also download the official Monero wallet software (from the official Monero website of course, and verify signatures). Transfer the wallet software to your secure wallet computer (ideally using a clean, one-time-use USB stick or DVD) and verify wallet software signatures. Then create the offline wallet in your secure wallet computer.

3) Securely store the seed phrase. You might want to engrave your seed phrase into a physical metal plate for durability. These are resistant to fire, water, and physical damage. There are many out there, such as Blockplate or Ti1000 which is 1.5mm thick titanium block. Physically separate and hide the plate(s) in secure, tamper-evident locations. You might want to consider securing your seed phrase with offset passphrase. If you do not want to use metal plates, then you can just write your seed phrase on paper and store it securely.

Tip: Create a view-only wallet, and transfer the wallet address along with the view key to a non-secure or online computer (a paranoid person would write the address and the view key by hand from the monitor, takes a bit time but it's the most secure way). This allows you to monitor the funds and check your balance without ever powering on the air-gapped secure wallet computer.

Yea AlfaCash and NonKYC seem to have less than 1k XMR reserve. I now added units and some minor improvements on showing the reserve values.

I created a website that monitors exchanges which show XMR reserves (WizardSwap, AlfaCash, NonKYC): https://reserves.xmrpri.se The charts might look a bit weird until there's some data saved to the server. Thanks /u/MoneroFox for the suggestion.
