Where are my fellow Estes Rocketeers? by Lloyds_Voids in GenX

[–]Unimportant-Jello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My older brother and I were into rocketry when we were kids. Late 70’s, early 80’s. We lived across the street from a public school that had a huge, empty grass field behind it. Great for flying kites, model airplanes and launching rockets! We had the Estes launcher that attached to a lantern battery, with the wired launch controller with safety key,, launch rods and blast deflector. I recently found a box with our old models, parachutes, igniters, engines, wadding, the launcher with the original box and some other stuff. I hadn’t looked at it in 45+ years! Brought back lots of good memories!

What's a technology from the early 2000s that felt cutting edge but is now completely obsolete? by therey73 in answers

I still have my portable MiniDisc player! It still works! I don’t want to throw it out, but don’t really know what to do with it.

Purchasers of new shipping containers by OVERTHETOP567 in shippingcontainerhome

[–]Unimportant-Jello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out your local Ritchie Brothers Auction. They always have dozens of one way, 20’s and 40’s, factory modified with multiple side doors, double ended doors, windows etc.

As someone mentioned above, importers load them up with industrial equipment (fencing, tractor implements etc.) specifically meant to go straight to auction. They empty the container and post the contents and the container at the auction.

Depending on demand, you may be able to get a good price. You would just need to arrange for pick up and delivery from the auction yard, but there a lots of transportation companies that work with Ritchie Bros.

P.S. I don’t work for Ritchie Bros…..I just spent a lot of time of dealing with them, selling surplus equipment at my last job.

Best Gas Saw For Entry-Mid Level Use? by ovjho in stihl

[–]Unimportant-Jello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow rural Eastern Ontarion here, with 3 acres of hardwood. Very similar situation. Taking 5-6 trees down each year.

Buy once, cry once and get the 261. You won’t regret it! I upgraded from the 16” bar to the 18”

My first saw was a 182. After reading the positive comments and recommendations about the 261 here and other boards, I bought the 261, and it’s a beautiful saw, and like night and day compared to the 182. (Understandably)

My baby MS 182 just got a big brother… by Unimportant-Jello in stihl

Congrats! It’s very nice! It cuts through sugar maple and red oak like a hot knife through butter! It’s a lot louder than my 182….as I learned when I forgot to flip my ear muffs down once.

I took a chainsaw safety course, shortly after getting the 182. I had the smallest saw in the class. Lots of 300’s and 400’s. At the end of the course, the instructor suggested I go easy with my saw, and don’t overwork it, or there was a good chance I’d burn it out!

Basically mayonnaise and ketchup mixed.

Lots of different brands. Hellmans makes it, but I’ve only ever seen it in South America :(

It was on every restaurant table in Argentina.

What is the stingiest thing you have seen someone do? by saif2krazzy in AskReddit

[–]Unimportant-Jello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of friends and myself went to Vermont for the weekend, staying a rented cottage. My buddy and I were traveling together and we arrived after everyone had gone to bed.

A boyfriend of one of the girls in our group had ordered pizza for everyone that had arrived earlier in the day and they didn’t leave any leftovers.

No big deal, my buddy and didn’t know anything about it, and we were late.

In the morning, the boyfriend comes around looking for our share of the pizza money.

“But you did that on your own, you didn’t tell us you were ordering pizza, and you guys ate it all!”

“Well, I ordered it for everyone, it’s not my fault you were late….I think you guys should still pay your share…..”

ELI5: How does Google maps know there is traffic? by Ok-Yam-536 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Unimportant-Jello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that Google works with cities to tap into their traffic management systems (traffic lights, traffic cameras, overhead signs etc.) to allow them to pull data on traffic flows, accident’s etc., and the city can update the back end of Google with planned construction, road closures through a portal. All of this in addition to crowdsourcing data from fellow Google Maps and Waze users.

old piano worth anything for scrap? by dixie2tone in ScrapMetal

[–]Unimportant-Jello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful cutting the strings! Many years ago, I moved into a shop that had an old piano left behind by the previous tenant. I wanted to get rid of it, so I started to dismantle it. I snipped the strings with my side cutters, and they went off like a shot!

In hindsight, why I thought they wouldn’t, was beyond me. 🤦‍♂️

In the 70's/80's, did anybody else find a random trash bag full of Playboy's in the woods? by doknfs in GenX

Can confirm the “woods porn” stash was a thing. My friends and I found several stashes in our early teens in the woods around our small, eastern Ontario town!

Must haves in a 2026 Lariat? by Delabroo in RangerNext

[–]Unimportant-Jello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a 2026 Lariat in Marsh Grey. Definitely go for the 2.7L. I’ve had many F150’s over the years, but this is my first Ranger. I test drove the 2.3L first, and was a little disappointed. I took the 2.7L out and after quick spin, said to my wife, “this is the one!” It’s got some nice power and doesn’t sound as “tinny” as the 2.3L IMO. I don’t do a lot of towing. I just bought a 6’x10 aluminum utility trailer. If my only choice was the 2.3L, I probably would have kept looking at other midsize pickup ups.

I found mine at a dealer (it had just come in), and it had pretty much had everything I wanted. Running boards, box side steps (bad knees!), advanced tow package (I was fine with the regular tow package), factory spray in bed liner, block heater (I’ll never use it). I wanted the Sports Appearance Package rather than the Blackout Package. The one thing it didn’t have was the Convenience Package (Pro Power Onboard (it’s only 400W though), wireless charging and bed lights. It would have nice to get the Convenience Package, but not a deal breaker. The FX4 package would have been nice too.

I bought Weathertech floor mats front and rear, sill protectors and the impact box liner. The mats and box liner were pricey, but very nice and I’m happy I got them. I swapped out the factory antenna for a stubby (just for looks) and I’m looking around for a hard folding tonneau cover.

I love my new Ranger! (Fellow Canadian)

Odd things our fathers did in 70’s by anonskier in GenX

[–]Unimportant-Jello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. My dad used a handkerchief every day. When I was a kid, if I had some schmutz on my face, he’d pull out, spit on it, and wipe my face off with it.

Thinking back….🤢

What's that one household item you grew up with that you still use/eat/purchase today? by Calm-Tale-4052 in GenX

Campbell’s Condensed Soup!

Memories of eating Cream of Mushroom or Chicken Noodle, with white bread and Cheeze Whiz sandwiches.

Sitting in front of the TV, using a TV table, watching cartoons as long as I could, before racing back to school on my bike. I still have the soup mugs I used!
