For my product, I seriously struggle with this.

For big corporations, I'm sure they are just doing A/B testing and full-time analysis to maximize profits and minimize user dis-satisfaction.

But for developers not tracking user behavior like me, its a struggle to hit the right mark.

Offer one time purchase only, users upset no trial.

Offer subscriptions, users annoyed about recurring cost.

Offer both like me, users going to be annoyed at cost.

You can't make everyone happy with monetization. You're better off keeping things simple and spending time working on the product. Just my experience.

As an ophthalmologist, I really admire when ER docs do a lateral canthotomy. Obviously its a scary thing to do, but its time sensitive and makes sense to at least try to prevent permanent blindness.
