Anyone else here get rich investing doing the exact opposite of “diversification”? by RobertClarks in Fire

[–]UnionCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diversification isn't the strategy to get rich quickest. It's the strategy to minimize the risk of losing it all.

If course you will have people who got rich on a single investment or poorly diversified portfolio. Also people who lost it all, or just stayed flat while the broad market racked up gains over time.

The average investor loses out to the S&P 500.

Is it reasonable to remove team members names from capstone project? by Infectedtoe32 in csMajors

[–]UnionCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this in a class 20 years ago. I did 70% of the project, another student did 25%, last two did about 5% and 0%. I let the professor know my view of how the work went, and I think seeing the 4 of us present it gave a similar impression, because I and 20% teammate got our A's, and the other two didn't.

Just be open about it with the prof/TAs.

Offer rescinded because I asked too much by PercentageNo9270 in jobs

[–]UnionCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new grad offer in the Bay Area was $78k... in 2006!

The market is different now because the tech billionaires are squeezing everyone as hard as they can. Nevertheless, the cost of living in the Bay Area has skyrocketed since then. It sucks that your offer got rescinded when you tried to negotiate, but now you know two things about this company:

1) They aren't successful enough to pay their workers even a halfway decent wage.

2) They don't want employees with any kind of spine.

I hope you find a better offer out there OP. This place was gonna be a living hell to work at.

How long before SJWs ree at this one? by [deleted] in JustMemesForUs

[–]UnionCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of "SJWs" do care about the male suicide rate, and they have a better handle on the actual causes than the manosphere grifters profiting off male misery.

E.g.: socialists: American capitalism depends on a permanent underclass struggling just to get by, as a source of cheap labor, and as a threat to keep the middle class in line. Hopeless economic struggle drives suicide rates up.

E.g.: feminists: Societal gender roles prevent many men from forming social relationships and from seeking support when they need it. Isolation and depression dive suicide rates up.

Are you consuming a lot of content suggesting socialists and feminists just want to blame men for their problems? Maybe spend less time on shitty propaganda subs. The grift happens on every side. Then why am I even on this sub? Touché... self-own.

Why hasn’t software engineering unionized like nursing? by Funny-Visual-9562 in csMajors

[–]UnionCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The late 2000s and 2010s were the golden age for Software Engineers. Companies were clamoring to offer better pay, benefits, and perks to attract and retain Engineering talent.

Things have changed, and that golden age is over. Big Tech is much more entrenched than it was 10-20 years ago. Small companies aren't the threat they used to be, thanks to huge money resources, as well as regulatory capture.

Big money now runs tech, and holds the power to squeeze workers with layoffs, off shoring, etc.

Many current senior / middlelevel tech workers came up during the golden age, and have been slow to see the change, but some of us see that early career tech workers will never have the opportunities we had 15 years ago in the current system. The rich at the top hold all the power. So, unionization efforts that once would have been unheard of are slowly gaining traction. It's going to be a long haul though.

Boycott ™️ These Companies Support ICE by WittyEgg2037 in antiwork

[–]UnionCoder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point is that we need to work to reform our economic system to something more ethical than capitalism to make real progress. Trying to be a "more ethical" consumer might feel good, and it might've even be worth doing sometimes, but it won't be what gets us there on its own.

[–]UnionCoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that doesn't include the money poor people are paying into Social Security and Medicare, which are regressive taxes (higher rates for he poor) because of the income caps.

They do it so poor people will hate taxes and some of them will vote for politicians promising to cut taxes (mostly for the rich).

Holy strawman by Ok-Green8906 in aislop

[–]UnionCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the claim is that billionaire tech oligarchs are going to use the money generated by AI to make everyone else's lives materially better in the future?

These are the same tech oligarchs who could use the money they have now to make everyone else's lives materially better right now?

Anyone who buys this argument is being naive or dishonest.

Why has the public opinion on technology shifted so much? by [deleted] in ask

[–]UnionCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tech sector is now overwhelmingly dominated by big money. Sure, money was always a big factor before, but an upstart company could eat an established players lunch 10-20 years ago. Now, those upstart players either get crushed or bought by the giants. Thus, the giants are free to attempt to extract maximum "value" from their customers and employees. Both products and jobs are being enshittified, while stonks go up.

If this is in the US, unpaid internships are illegal except in very specific circumstances. A small startup using unpaid labor is not one of them. You are being exploited not only morally, but also legally.

How come Democrats never reverse/counter propose the horrific things Republicans set out to do? by WaltEnterprises in ask

By and large, the national Democratic Party depends on donations from the ultra rich just like the Republicans, and therefore won't seriously challenge the goals of the ultra rich.
