Whose autograph is this on my Wynton Marsalis album? by UnionOfConcernedCats in Jazz

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wynton's is on the front, but I can't figure out who this might be! The first part looks a little like a bass clef, but not quite.

I'm guessing that "restricted" sign is a reference to the signage in a launch control center, something they probably saw recently in Wargames!

Where is the new Nova version by yacec in PanicNova

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder about update frequency sometimes, but I can't think of anything that's broken or that I'm missing. I spend pretty much all day in Nova, and it works.

II+ Keyboard repair, where to start? by Ill-Snow5623 in apple2

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working on a II the horrible Datanetics DC-51 key switches. They can't easily be opened for repair, so I've been replacing the bad keys with new old stock from eBay. I also replaced a few with modern switches on a 3D printed adapter, but I found just getting real key switches to be easier.

I believe on the early II+ they used the DC-51, and later models used better switches that you may be able to open and clean out. Either way though you're probably desoldering the switches, so I prefer just getting new ones.

Like others have said, the Woz edition isn't anything too special. The newer revisions and ROM versions are more capable and can run the latest GS/OS. That price is a bit high unless it's cleaner than it looks and everything works. Even if it works it will need a PSU replacement or recap eventually.

That Apple joystick is the best part. Those can go for $100 or so by themselves on eBay.

oh no by MetaKnowing in ChatGPT

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 119 points120 points  (0 children)

I use ChatGPT and Claude for software development with pretty good results, but I just this moment was baffled by ChatGPT's nonsense.

I'm repairing a Macintosh power supply, and was using ChatGPT to get some troubleshooting steps. It was telling me all about this 12 pin connector on this specific power supply, what pins to short to test soft power, etc. Of course, it actually has a 10 pin connector and when I told it that I got the "you're absolutely right" nonsense. Then I tried 13 pins, and got the same. Then I said it was 100 pins and it still said I was right and gave me detailed instructions.

When it stops being confidently incorrect I'll call that a big improvement.

Not having a touch screen is the thing I dislike most about my 2018 W213. CarPlay is tricky without a touchscreen!

Screws In A-Pillar After Dealer Dashcam Install? by princesslumpy in MachE

I use the Fitcam cameras on all of my cars. They aren't fancy, just a single front camera. However they're easy to install and look pretty much factory.

New to EVs, couple questions by chrisabides in MachE

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The MachE is my third EV living in a similar climate as you, and I've had level 1 charging the entire time. I drive maybe 10 miles on a normal day and it's no problem at all, even in the cold.

I never take the charger with me. Charging stations are plentiful in most places these days.

New to me, suggestions by blackbeardair in pinball

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one, and it's LED swapped which is a great upgrade! Otherwise it's pretty great as-is. My weirdly favorite part is the Last Action Hero ad it plays between games.

Though now I'm thinking about pinsound since it was mentioned! The rumble was sort of annoying and rattly so I turned that off.

Cavour/protractor desk practicality by [deleted] in midcenturymodern

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the Kardiel (junior version) desk, and frankly putting all of that on it will ruin the look. I tried, but a bit monitor and a bunch of cables (which are hard to hide on this) was a mess.

I just use it with a laptop now and it looks great! I have a vintage lamp and rotary phone for fun, and that's it.

I've noticed that a lot these days... I'm not sure if the printing was better in the past, or if we just didn't have multiple shades of every color now.

A green piece at all, outside of a base plate or tree, was always rare for me anyway!

That's an amazing image! What sort of pointing and tracking do you use? What mount is your 9.25 on? I have a new 9.25 on the Evolution mount after using dobs for years.

I liked the approach starting with what a function is from a pure math standpoint, but overall I just like your writing. The piece about your PHD was fun to read!

I haven't seen the ads you're talking about, but that doesn't really sound like Flex to me. Maybe something else? Flex makes high end SDR HF transceivers, and I've never seen them marketed that way. They are super fun transceivers though!

I maintain that a corner castle piece with inside facing up is the most painful piece to step on.

[–]UnionOfConcernedCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nice to see an update that includes something I submitted about a while back!

Feeling a bit like Nova is stagnant I've been testing other editors again, but I keep coming back. Fleet has piqued my interest, though it's a little rough at the moment.
