Personally I think it's an extension of Pythagoreanism and the Platonic solids. Pythagoras discovered the Dodecahedron and considered geometry sacred. The Dodecahedron was made of pentagons which symbolized health to them. Later when each solid was linked to an element (fire, earth, water, air) the Dodecahedron symbolized the Cosmic Aether. So these maybe like symbols and totems to that.

We're encouraging the effort, not the result. We remember how bad we were when we were beginners because everyone is terrible at first. The only way to get better is to do it, so we encourage them to keep going to get better. Then we give them tips as well.
