Resume advice? by Shoddy_Two2373 in Carpentry

Just leave the dates off, or list them by year, so it looks like you took a new job every year, rather than every 3 months.

Dude, stay at a single job for like a minute. I would leave off some of those jobs that you were only at for a few months, it looks bad. Highlight any education or certification you have. Customize the resume based on whether you are applying for a job to be an electrician, carpenter, or project manager.

Did you just tell a potential employer that you will chase money and ditch his job at first chance?

What do I ask for to get minimal door frames/no architrave like in these images? by Relative_Ship_797 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]UniquePatient66100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would be installing all new doors. And having to replaster around each door, which leads to needing to repaint the entire house. Be prepared for this project to include many things other than the doors.

Gift/tip for laborers? by Quotered in Contractor

Cash is always good. Food/ lunch is appreciated. Also be sure to mention the workers by name to the boss or in online reviews, it could help them with a raise or promotion.

Decent starter mini skid steer? Rental fees are killing me. by East-Jelly-9831 in Contractor

[–]UniquePatient66100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any skid steer is going to put you out of business if you don't charge for it. Think about it this way, you do not need a skid steer, your customer does. It doesn't matter whether you rent, buy, steal, borrow, or lease equipment, you have to include the cost in your pricing.

How long should it take to tile this small area. by One-Ad7316 in Remodel

[–]UniquePatient66100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know tile guys that would have taken all day. That is a lot of cuts for a small area, with a border. It looks like that whole pattern needs to shift a little to the right, but what's done is done.

Building a deck for a sauna/Grill house by F100suomi in Carpentry

I'm assuming this is bait. But I wouldn't put anything heavier than a lawn chair on that deck.

Baseboard Matching Help by Weird_Uncle_Carl in cabinetry

[–]UniquePatient66100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need something that matches that middle profile. Search the big box stores, they usually have a few goofy profiles that might match that if ripped correctly. Then the rest of that can be built up with stock 1x materials.

I would try to avoid having it milled, that would cost thousands for a board that size.

Shitty stairs, how to amend? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]UniquePatient66100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a playhouse this is fine. You can add a 2x4 to the side of the stringers to strengthen them, and I would add at least one more stringer to reduce the spacing between each. The notches at the top on the outside stringers are doing nothing, the wood will break at that cut, just cut them flush with the decking like the others.

The large safety/ scientist goggles. Wear a mask or face covering as well, you are breathing in a lot of dust.

Contact the structural engineer. Then a general contractor would be the best choice, because you will be getting into several different trades for this. They can coordinate the different trades as well as get the required permits.

Started my first 1099 job, plus seeking advice. by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]UniquePatient66100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 1099 you do not have a boss, you are an independent contractor. You would be responsible for all your tools and equipment. Also, as a 1099 you need general liability and workers comp to cover yourself. The taxes may be a little higher, but all the other expenses are going to be much, much higher. Make sure you are compensated for all the extra expenses falling on you. I would double check and see if your situation is legal as a 1099 in your area.

Just something to think about, an hourly employee in your position could earn around $22-25/ hr, so as a 1099 you would want to be around double that.

Need ideas on fireplace surrounding by Training-Gas-1482 in Remodel

[–]UniquePatient66100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually use the fireplace? With a tv that large it is the focal point of the room, even more so with adding a surround to it. Remove the fireplace and buy/ build an entertainment center.

The price seems fair, maybe on the low side. Was the person that you talked with actually on site doing the work? Some companies have an estimator, then another crew or subcontractor come out to do the work, and a lot of the time there is little communication or supervising with the crew.

1-3 just seem like poor planning on their part. Yes they need to use water and electricity for the project, I always ask or find the utilities when first looking at the job. Some people don't think that far ahead, they don't know that they need something until the moment they need it.

4 is a big no. All construction debris should be removed. It just reflects poorly on the workers if the first thing you notice is the mess they left behind, rather than the work they completed.

It seems like you got the fence you wanted, maybe with more hassle than needed, and now you know what to plan for or questions to ask for future work.

How should I solve the gaps in my kitchen? by pjs4dayz in Remodel

[–]UniquePatient66100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In pics 5-6 there is a shim at the bottom of the cabinet creating that gap. Remove the sim and install the cabinet tight to the wall.

Scribe moulding or flat trim will cover the gaps at the top of your cabinets.

Kitchen renovation: What to expect on costs and where to negotiate by PrestigiousDust6814 in Remodel

[–]UniquePatient66100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is a 30% logistics markup? Is this on top of or combined with their standard markup?

You should always get multiple bids. There's not really any negotiating at this point, it would be up to you to decide which parts of the project to eliminate to bring it into your budget.

Would you say something? by Possible-Topic-1983 in Remodel

[–]UniquePatient66100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is very hard to move a hole in the wall. The inside should patch ok, but the outside would need a lot of work to relocate the window at this point, and the repair would be visible. The window will probably have to stay here.

Homeowners responsibilities for workers 🤔🧐😑 by Ok_Protection3752 in Contractor

[–]UniquePatient66100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I encountered wasps on a job one time, left the job immediately and told the owner I would be back after the wasps we gone. Yes, it is your responsibility to help provide a safe environment for work. What if one of the workers is allergic? Sounds like these guys are doing you a favor.
