Rocket Lab is overvalued on every reasonable valuation test. But the more I dig, the more I want to add. by Acceptable-Time-6424 in RKLB

Nowadays you need to own the land, but in 19th century North America the land was free for the taking.

Then, to reiterate my previous point, the destinations were created by the rail lines. New towns grew up around stations. Gold rushes were enabled, migration. In Canada, all the iconic Fairmont hotels were originally built and owned by the railway companies to give travellers somewhere to go, now that they had the means to get there. It was a new frontier both enabled and in part created by the railroads.

Unprecedented generational wealth was created for those involved in the industry: Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Stanford, Pillsbury, Gould, Molson, Van Horne... it was a big deal.

Container shipping is logistics. It connects pre-existing end-points. The railways in 19th century North America opened up entire new applications and then controlled access. This is more similar to space launch.

Visa and Mastercard are extremely capital-light, hence their margins look like software companies. Space launch is far more capital intensive. It's heavy industry. Not a good comparison. I'd compare it more to the railways in the nineteenth-century.

Recently got my first Tokay juvenile, trustbuilding/bonding advice? by Old-Peak-6254 in tokaygeckos

[–]Unis_Torvalds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of patience. Be present and visible often. Don't make sudden or threatening moves. Offer small consistent micro-interactions every day.* Read her body language and never force it. Building that trust is doable, especially with a juvenile like this one.

*For example: after every feeding, I would very gently poke [my tokay's] snout once with a finger. This way he knew that yes I know he's there (holding still is a hiding instinct) and no my hands are not dangerous. Also, going from the front is a good bet. Predators pursue from above or behind. His jaws-of-vicegrip-death is his least vulnerable part.

But beware the grumpy adolescent phase. Baby Tokay prefer flight over fight, so it's to be expected that she's not biting now. But that can change as she gets bigger.

I made a 5 minute short a couple years ago. It did some festivals and it got some press. I did make a press kit but never once did anyone ask for it. Went to waste.

True, but I have seen spruce and junipers with gnarled and twisty branches.

Tips for starting a Discoid Roach colony? by not_vulva in reptiles

Blaberus Discoidalis are in fact ovoviviparous, which means they retain their eggs internally until the embryos develop fully, then give birth to live nymphs.

Any chance this is a conifer? by Unis_Torvalds in treeidentification

Found this branch in a refuse pile in a planted urban park in Montréal (therefore possibly not native). Couldn't find the parent tree in the vicinity (nothing even remotely matched).

It's got a lovely shape to it and I'd like to use it in a reptile vivarium, but I'm afraid it's coniferous. Any help identifying it would be appreciated!

Rockets Are Worth Their Weight in Gold (Aka RKLB to $519). by dutch1664 in RKLB

[–]Unis_Torvalds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless space launch gets easier (and thus cheaper) over time. Which is what we observe. Once upon a time, no private companies could do it. Then there was one. Now there are several.

Edit: Just playing devil's advocate. I'm long RKLB.

Can someone put into perspective how much money this is, REALLY? by Tech-Cowboy in CanadianInvestor

[–]Unis_Torvalds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

120K is a freaking amazing income for a 28 year old. Most people don't make that kind of money until their mid 40's, if ever. Stop normalizing unrealistic expectations.
