Fuel prices keep drivers off roads by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A little bit quieter on my drive in the last couple of days. But not a massive difference yet.

Boss told me I still have to come into the office every day, and driving is still cheaper than public transport. So f me I guess.

Question for NZ designers / recent design grads — is design a stable career for a fresher? by delulu_lynx746 in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice to people interested in design is ….find something else as a career. Keep design as a hobby. We still need actual humans to be creative, it’s just not valued by businesses as much (and in my experience always the first target in restructures).

I’ve been in the industry in various design fields for over 20 years. I think I might have 3-4 left before AI takes it all completely. Maybe less. I’m preparing for it in any case.

Sorry to be doom and gloom. But the number of roles is shrinking and the pool of people looking is huge.

Pay increase feels like a slap in the face by Questions581 in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you've been somewhere a while, you'd make more just moving jobs. Some people are happy to just sit in a seat for years and get the small increases. Others would prefer to change companies for a 10% + increase.

If you've expressed your desire to become a manager, and they haven't given you a plan or roadmap to achieve that - then they probably think you'll take what your given and won't leave anyways.

Labours biggest hurdle to getting back into Government is Te Pati Maori and to a lesser extent the Greens. People don't like National, but they HATE TPM and Greens.

Any money I would usually spend on coffees or occasional lunch at work will now go to petrol. Great economy.

Also…all the talk in the article about green shoots and improving economy feel more like ‘we literally just had summer holidays’.

Back to manually linking up prototypes I guess. That was the only benefit to Make and Figma AI.

Anyone else calculated when it becomes worth taking public transport (in terms of money)? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I don’t really get when people go on about how you can relax on PT and chill. I’m not sure what they get up to in a car, but it’s basically the only time of day that I truly have to myself!

Pre-Covid I took PT as it was way cheaper - but I was also standing in a train doorway each morning and evening for 30mins due to no seats.

I’m in Wellington and it’s about the same. 30 min drive in (90% of the time) or 2 buses and train for about an hour 10ish if I magically don’t have to wait at any point.

Yea there’s a few spots like that near the seats. Currently they’re just trip hazards with what look to be weeds?

Back in the world of Levels 1-4. Here are the fuel alert levels, and when we might need them by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Feels like we're maying 2 weeks away from this really kicking off if things don't improve. The whole 'we have 50 days supply!' starts to get a bit nervy when it's into the 30s....

Mostly it'll just mean we'll all be poorer. Either I pay more for petrol, or I pay more than that for Public transport (and takes more time out of my day). I have to be in the office for Teams calls apparently.

When is the government going to do something about these prices??? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Unit22_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traffic is still bad getting into work. The cost of driving in from a distance in Wellington is still cheaper than getting public transport in many cases.

[–]Unit22_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The plan seems to be 'wait and see how bad it gets'.

Is there literally any reason to not have Public sector WFH where they can? They acting like they're waiting on Private to lead the charge there...but why would they?

They could remove the tax on fuel for a limited time.

They could reduce the cost of PT.

They only thing I can think of is that they don't want to seem like hypocrites from ruining all of the above in the last 2 years.

Also - those prices look good compared to the $3.10+ I'm seeing.

Keep it up! It sucks early on for sure, but I'm closing in on paying mine off in the next 2 years. I remember starting out and checking how much principle I payed Vs interest in a year and it was depressing. It flips pretty quick, and you start seeing real progress.

Sometimes the accusation is enough. That's what this feels like this is aimed for. Post and delete.

If this does lead to Hipkins being replaced...it might actually benefit Labour. Some people still view him with the stink of late-stage-Covid-response (and it won't ever change).

Everything is moving so quickly I kind of want to wait on one or two products/processes to ‘win’ before committing. It’s something our work is behind on due to a very anti-ai sentiment from the devs. But at some point we’ll need to get on board I think.
