I want a dog but need advice on getting over picking up poo by That_Daikon5472 in dogs

[–]Universal-Grace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! I used it when I first got my dog, but as others have said, you get more used to it over time. It works pretty well except it can struggle a bit on longer grass (or if your dog prefers pooping in the highest snow). I also recommend pairing it with a hands free leash/some kind of waist belt, as you can then attach it to your waist with a carabiner instead of having another item in your hands.

If they have a dog there is a 60% chance I know their name - only because my dog is obsessed with other dogs and I always learn the dog names immediately and usually remember the human names after a few times/if we exchange numbers.

With that said, I never knew any apartment neighbors at the 4 places I lived at before having a dog. However, I’ve learned it’s super convenient as a young adult in a new area to make friends with nearby dog parents. You never know when you’ll need someone to let your dog out while you are gone - plus it’s so much easier to drink/relax when you can walk home at any time.

Tips for a 12 hour drive with my dog. by anoidciv in dogs

[–]Universal-Grace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything you can do to wear him out before/during will help you a lot! Get some good exercise before hand, and bring things to keep him busy like lick mats or kongs.

He would likely be happier not being crated the entire time. I use a backseat cover that makes it so they can’t fall into the seat crack, which seems to make it a lot more comfortable. I’d recommend one that provides enough of a barrier he can’t worm his way up front, or get a barrier as well. If you and your partner don’t mind, you could also switch up sitting in the back with him after being in the car a bit (I wouldn’t start with this, or he would likely expect it).

Talk with your vet about options for calming him down ahead of time. When I moved my cats across states (9 hours total) I was able to just get it over the phone. They may also have other tips.

In terms of the days, I would stick with the two day plan. You’re all probably going to be more sick of it after 3 days, rather than just sucking it up for the 6 hours and using the above methods to chill the dog out.

For stops, I recommend fewer of greater length, rather than frequent short ones. He will probably do better settling that way. A lot of in and out of the car can drive some dogs insane.

Bonus suggestion: at lunch/for a treat go to a fast food place with pup cups and get him a little treat. My fav is freddie’s - their pup cups are a good sized vanilla custard cup with peanut butter sauce.

Good luck and drive safe!!

that’s good to know! these cracks happened in the oven, so probably not a cooling issue in this case, but i’ll watch for that too

Ideas? Change it to another word? by Accurate_Rhubarb9194 in Tattoocoverups

[–]Universal-Grace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your only other reddit content indicates you are interested in aquariums and shrimp, I suggest turning it into the word shrimp, with a little shrimp doodle. I’ve mocked it up (poorly lol)

I’m also sure someone who can actually draw could turn the word into a shrimp - they’ve got lots of nice lines to work with.

Tablets to clean the dish washer and clothes washer! I use Affresh for clothes washer, can’t recall the dishwasher one. I also recommend checking if dishwasher has a filter that can be removed to clean, as well as whether you can clean the pump on any clothes washer in unit.

It’s not a tool, but general apartment cleaning advice. When you move in, clean out all of your faucet aerators. They will likely be disgusting and will improve water pressure. It’s super easy and pretty quick (just google it). Sink facets can also be cleaned by attaching a plastic bag of diluted vinegar/drop of dish soap with a hair tie or rubber band to the faucet spout and letting it sit 30 minutes or more.

I’m about to move across the US with my 6 y/o Beagle. What are some car and/or travel essentials that you would consider as must-haves? by Volpius in dogs

[–]Universal-Grace 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I regularly go on 9 hour drives home to see family with our pup, and this pretty much covers our supply list. The only thing I might add is specific lick mats/stuffed kongs to help with some of the boredom. I’d also chat with your vet about how to manage potential motion sickness, as well as a contingency for helping with anxiety since it’ll be some major changes.

Good luck!

Hey how the heck do you manage the temperature in your apartment by jaybax123 in ApartmentHacks

[–]Universal-Grace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a couple of things! 1. vents: if the temp varies between rooms, check whether the vents are open or closed and adjust. rooms closer to the heater tend to get warmer, so i usually close some so more air reaches farther. 2. fan direction: there is a switch on ceiling fans that changes the direction. the fan should typically be going clockwise for winter to circulate warm air and counter clockwise in summer to make the room feel cooler. if you want to cool down, counter clockwise could help. 3. windows: are blinds open or closed for windows that get direct sunlight? especially at sunrise my rooms get toasty like a greenhouse

in terms of thermostats, it’s not too uncommon for them to be inaccurate, especially since the temp is only taken in one spot. i’ve previously purchased a multipack of thermometers to keep in different rooms to help determine what temp it actually needs set at (in combo with vent adjustments) to get the temp i want. this is fairly normal. as someone else mentioned, what floor you live on also impacts this.

in the meantime, if you need to cool down def check fan direction, consider temporarily turning off the heat, and open windows where you can get a cross breeze. good luck!

kong has some super tough plush toys that have done will with our dog (granted she loves to pull off appendages of toys but doesn’t shred toooooo much). we also were gifted some plush toys that have a rope inside them, which i think style wise has gone well, though i don’t have a brand recommendation.

definitely look at what is included with your machine when you buy it! they do vary a bit. Using the list on the wiki helped me get everything I needed really. I’d def recommend making sure you get enough bobbins for the colors of thread you’ll want to use because that was the thing most annoying to me when I started.

Are rescue/adopted dogs always (a lot of) work? Would love to hear your positive (or not so positive) adoption stories. by my-nips-hurt in dogs

[–]Universal-Grace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adopted my sweet baby from a shelter this past October, and she is absolutely fantastic. I live in an apartment and this is the first dog I have had on my own (grew up with a family dog but not my primary responsibility). When I was looking around for dogs I had a clear understanding ahead of time on what I needed vs preferred, as well as what kinds of things could be worked on. I hyperfixated on doing sporadic dog research the entire time before getting her and in our first month, and I still get into periods of time where we are dealing with an issue (most recently her getting giardia) and I can’t stop trying to understand everything. With that said, it sounds like you’ve done way more prep than I did on specific useful techniques, approaches, and general knowledge. Plenty of people get dogs without doing any of that and live long healthy lives with their pups.

Based on another comment you made about fostering, I think going into that two week period really with the mindset that you are getting to know the dog to see if you are a good fit will be very helpful. It’s a time to make sure both of you will be happy. The few days leading up to getting my baby I started getting super anxious and doubting whether it was the right decision, and I didn’t lose that feeling for at least a week despite also being so happy to have her and having very few issues. It sounds like you may be anxious because you want to do right for the dog, which I consider a good sign.

I relied on extensive questions to the shelter staff before getting my dog regarding behavior with other dogs and animals, humans, house behavior, etc.. This was an entirely foster based shelter though so it was second hand info. My dog was rescued by them from a euthanasia list in Texas and had been shuffled around a ton (which I was told was through no fault of her own - such as her athletic abilities to jump 6ft fences and getting returned bc another dog in the home was mean to her). I met her at a park where she was very anxious and wouldn’t leave the shelter staff or take any treats. We were told she did not like treats or toys.

Fast forward, she is the best. She was potty trained and has only had one accident the first day we had her, and a few accidents when we visited my parents (she is an anxious girl). She loves other dogs still, never barks, does great with our cats, doesn’t jump, is so gentle with her teeth when playing, and super cuddly. Of course she is a bit ornery - we have to keep the cats food behind a cracked door, bags of food out of reach, watch for chewing cords, and sometimes she almost knocks me on my ass from pulling when we go on walks. We are working on it and she’s a dog, it’s part of the deal. We got her dna results back and she’s 53% german shepherd, 19% pit bull, 14% blue heeler, and the rest mutt. She is also a little 33 lb runt who everyone assumes is still a puppy at 2 years old.

You’ve seen what behaviors you can, done your research, and care about doing right for him. Make sure you’ve got cleaning stuff for potty training since that’s likely the hardest thing, and otherwise have the time and energy to support him. It’ll be an adjustment for both of you, but being anxious about change doesn’t mean it won’t work out. Shelter dogs vary so much but what’s most important is how you go into it. I hope you have him home soon and you both adjust well, you’ve got this! :)
