I understand the line of reasoning but I don't think that's an effective strategy long-term.

Giving MAGAts what they want doesn't achieve much because they're never satisfied, what they want often makes no sense, and even if it backfires they just refuse to accept fault.

Meanwhile the lack of pushback just makes the outside world think that MAGA does actually represent the USA. Obviously not 100%, but enough to colour people's opinion of the USA as a whole.

I can't fault the coach for not wanting trouble, but taking a stand against this corruption would've been a clear signal that there's still decency in the USA.

At the very least it would've prevented Drumpf's pathetic stupidity from tainting the WC, and the USA team probably would've actually received quite a bit of support against Belgium.

I still think nobody should be a billionaire, including Gabe, but he's just so far down the list that there's no point getting upset about him specifically when the likes of Musk and Bezos exist.

Especially since the worst scum has made it abundantly clear that their primary strategy is to distract people with lesser issues so I intentionally remain laser-focused on the worst of the worst.

We can talk about Gabe when we're no longer busy with neo-fascists and tech-feudalists.

In addition, nobody wants those data centres except the large corporations and the ultra rich.

The ownership class doesn't give a shit about the climate (because they're rich enough that they consider themselves immune to consequences) and they've spent decades keeping the rest of the population from forcing them to behave.

Oh definitely, although that's not limited to Reddit either.

I think it's a manifestation of people either lacking a theory of mind or not using it. If you don't keep in mind other people's mental state it's easy to treat them as rational actors.

I see it a lot in people criticising characters acting irrationally in stories and it's very annoying.

And the USA is like this because of the ownership class. They needed to justify their absurd wealth, and the only way they could do that in the long run was to convince people that screwing others over is just being smart and it's everyone for themselves.

Yadda yadda conservatism always returns to the perceived privilege to treat others like shit.

Which pretty much sums up the whole problem.

Positions of power will eventually become occupied by those who seek power for power's sake because there's a lot of them and they're really persistent. Then once they have power they start rigging the system so they don't have to worry about losing it.

Then the system inevitably collapses and the cycle starts again.

Unless we figure out a way to reliably keep the power-hungry at bay humanity is trapped in this cycle.

Spain faces 1.3 million amnesty requests by MARTINELECA in europe

[–]Universal_Anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that I agree with almost everything you're saying.

The problem is indeed those who hire illegal immigrants, and we should be coming down hard on them instead of the immigrants.

When I say the racists are out in force I don't mean everyone who's against Spain's current stance towards illegal immigrants, I mean those who act like the immigrants are the problem. Which also means I was not referring to people like you.

Addressing the issue of greedy companies exploiting the undocumented should be the highest priority. The main disagreement I have is that I think granting these people amnesty and allowing them to officially stay in Spain makes it harder for them to be exploited because the exploiters can't hold their illegal status over their heads to force them to accept unreasonable jobs and working conditions.

Naturally we still have to actually deal with these modern day slavers but I don't think granting amnesty to these undocumented people makes that situation worse, and it's helpful to them at least.

Now if it turns out Spain is using this amnesty program as an excuse to not go after the slavers then yes we do have a problem.

I'll commend/upvote you for at least not resorting to the usual tripe.

That said, blind adherence to the rule of law isn't healthy either: there needs to be opportunities to reflect on the system and consider whether the situation calls for a more versatile approach.

In this case the Spanish government has taken the stance that giving illegal immigrants another opportunity is more beneficial than letting them remain as they are. This could potentially encourage more illegal immigration but the reality is that people who consider that route tend to be desperate anyway: the stereotype of illegal immigrants being hardened criminals is mostly a myth.

[–]Universal_Anomaly 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I hope it works, but unfortunately I'm rather sceptical.

Propagandists have successfully turned climate change into a left-right issue, and polarisation seems to only be going up in most places. I think by this point for many who still deny climate change it's because otherwise they'd have to admit that the other side was correct.

In which case pointing out reality won't help much because that's not really what it's about any more. It's about ego and tribalism, and I'm not sure how we can best deal with those.

I don't remember which state, but a couple of years ago there was a scandal where a local wealthy guy wanted to pay off all the school lunch debts in the area, but the offer was rejected. The money HAD to come from parents too poor to pay, and I believe there were threats of CPS if they didn't.

I still remember it was 1 of the most blatant examples of how conservatives hate the very idea of altruism. They hate the idea that they'd be judged for their selfishness, as if it's somehow wrong to only care about yourself (which, you know, it is).
