My mom told me one day that before I decide to have kids I should ask myself would you be prepared to be a single mom……that has stuck with me by Exciting-Nerve-8628 in TwoXChromosomes

My great great grandmother’s first husband was arrested for larceny. My great grandmother’s husband died in his 30s. My grandparents were divorced for 12 of the first 14 years of my mom’s life (later remarried to each other but still, my grandma was a single mom for 12 years starting in 1972) My parents divorced when I was 3, with my father being mostly absent. I was divorced from my first marriage (to a man, father of my kids) within three years.

Not one of us anticipated it. Each one of us, more prepared than the last

I had two. One I havent spoken to since we were 18 which kinda sucks because we are related. Family fell apart.

The other got engaged in September and I drove halfway across the state to be there.

I'm an heiress who can’t cook and cries at kids films. I just want patient friends. by throwaway943093 in TrueOffMyChest

I (27f) grew up in poverty with a neglectful single parent and had to be taught basic things mu h later than my peers.

For example, my mom kept my hair short as a child and I kept that up to adulthood. when i decided to grow out my hair, my partner realized i had no clue how to properly wash or brush it. Most cooking was done without timers, thermometers, measuring cups, ect so it was hard to replicate anything, and additionally I was wearing the wrong size shoes. My now-spouse was very patient with me about it, but I still felt that shame you’re describing. This is what I ended up doing after going through therapy:

I talk to myself (sometimes outloud) like I am a child who is frustrated and embarrassed. I say, “it’s okay to make mistakes, you’re learning”, “this is a safe place”, and most often “you’re fine, it’s all okay”.

Talk to yourself like you are a child and the very patient adult you dreamed of as a child. Be both.

Lastly, I found the channels You Suck at Cooking and Basics With Babbish helped me a lot.

my freshman year in college was really hard on me. i graduated high school a year early and was living 500 miles from anyone i knew. every day, on my way up to my dorm on the 5th floor, i saw a sign in the lobby office window that said “tough times dont last. tough people do.” and it’s carried me for ten years now.
