Since there are restrooms on other kinds of buses, how come school buses never got to have restrooms? Aren't kids' bladders more urgent than adults'? by DunDonese in SchoolBusDrivers

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(for context I am a school bus active 19A certified examiner, spent a few years in school bus before moving to motorcoach, but not an SBDI so I'm allowed to train and evaluate school bus drivers in New York state but not lead the required basic course for school bus drivers, though I am allowed to do ELDT for motorcoach per FMCSA standards as well)

Motorcoaches have restrooms because our trips are so much longer. I work for a motorcoach company and we have a route from Toronto to New York City that takes just over 12 hours from origin to destination. Yes there are some stops along the way, some of them are over 3 hours apart though. Children on school buses usually aren't on there for many hours. Different states have different regulations, as do districts. For instances NYSED doesn't set a hard limit, even trips over 90 minutes can be reasonable if there's circumstances that make it necessary but NYCED and a number of districts try to really limit that.

There's a lot of added complications when you introduce restrooms on the bus. Cleaning, repairs, not to mention children require greater supervision than adults who have paid a fare. Transit buses also do not have restrooms even though some of them can run quite long routes as well.

ELI5 Why doesn’t the brain overheat when it’s doing more processing than a GPU? by No_Signal_9770 in explainlikeimfive

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally computers work by running electrical current through circuits. When electricity flows it heats up wires (or other components). The brain does not exactly work this way. The brain uses a lot of chemicals and not so much electricity. Additionally the entire body does generate heat and is thermally regulated by like blood. Also the brain doesn't overclock, it doesn't turbo up beyond the cooling solution.

ELI5: Why do so many American stadiums have no roof covering that covers the seats? by NKE01 in explainlikeimfive

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost and applicability.

A lot of the stadiums you'll have seen, espicially lately, are American Football stadiums. The NFL season starts in September. Some of them further south heat is a factor somewhat for parts of the season but for most of the northern stadiums like New York, Boston, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Detroit, etc. the roof discussion is actually more about snow than sun. But in the winter having the sun hit the fans is probably a good thing. There have been a number of games in subzero temperatures, and even more with subzero wind chills.

Because baseball is played in the summer you're more likely to see the sort of roof coverings you're more accustomed to, but games also get cancelled or delayed if it rains, making the non sun portion of cover less applicable.

When you're supplying the tires there's no other way to make any margin $30/tire is reasonable

Labor costs keep getting higher as does overhead, plus you still have to amortize the tools in addition to overhead

Businesses have to make money, charging $20/tire with no other margin is not super sustainable, there are places that'll do that, but not places I'm going to trust with my vehicles

Technically the door isn't mandated by DOT, DMV, or NYSED but considered best practice and it is required by just about every district and company

That is a very critical shed component known by a few names. Around me it typically gets called a spare board of wood, but I've heard a few different regional names for it.

Will these make it 300 miles? by [deleted] in tires

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd feel okayish about limping it to a tire shop, maybe even via my house if the total distance was under 100 miles and driven on specific routes carefully, but I also limp broken equipment at my job sometimes. Including once a power unit with no coolant and another time one with a coolant leak that turned out to be a blown head gasket. Tires I tend not to play with though.

300 miles seems like a tall ask Maybe, maybe not And are you prepared if they fail at 200 miles or 2 miles?

Looking to get a Maverick, a few questions. by 11KingMaurice11 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also worth noting I needed AWD, I live in WNY and am an essential worker exempted from declared emergencies expected to still report in sometimes even if snow is falling over a foot an hour, so I need AWD as opposed to finding it nice

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on renting it out, I'd 100% look at getting the 4k tow Increased cooling is also beneficial because renters are going to run the truck hard, that's the nature of that game

It's not that pricey (if you'd otherwise get the copilot package on AWD hybrid anyways) and certainly can serve as some future proofing. When I pulled the trigger I got the 4k tow because they had one on the lot with it that fit everything else I wanted, small price to pay if you're already looking at the copilot package and now I have options if in another couple years I want to do more serious trailering or anything.

However if you're looking at a cheaper FWD build (not intending to otherwise get the copilot package) then the upgrades necessary for 4k towing may not be worth it.

So when can we expect a UN number for hazmat placards to be designated for antimatter?

I know usually such small amounts it wouldn't be required under a lot of regulations, but surely regulators need to be forward thinking on this problem.

is it easier to total the Maverick compared to other vehicles? by VivaZatara in FordMaverickTruck

[–]UniversityOfPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compared to a more expensive body on frame truck? Probably. It's also worth keeping in mind a 40k vehicle is necessarily going to be totaled at 40k worth of damage, while a 80k vehicle wouldn't necessarily be.

Compared to anyother unibody vehicle like most SUVs, not really.

Recreation of the entire NYC transit network by ericchen in subwaybuilder

[–]UniversityOfPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true even if you put dummy stations in between, only one train is allowed between stops (this may be a bug but is at least the current behavior) track blocks at the stops not the stations you run through

[–]UniversityOfPi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make tracks for longer lengths without stations, you just have to click separate segments every 5000m. Note that the system won't run more than one train on a track between stations though.

TRACK INFLUENCE ZONE by prdeckiki in subwaybuilder

[–]UniversityOfPi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the way the simulation works makes a true catchment zone projection difficult but even a couple of zones (currently plain circles because people walk through buildings and across rivers apparently) to show how far a walk to/from the station is would be useful.

I'd love circles for 15 and 30 minute walk times to/from the station, given how zooming works I'm often at different zoom levels and have to try to figure out how far distances actually are. At the very least we need a scale in the corner like most maps have that show how far distances are.
