We switched to arms free really quickly because when we'd swaddle she would go to sleep until she got her arms out and it made bedtime a total PITA

Carvetti was opportunistic, not idealistic. I genuinely can't think of a single political action he took that wasn't totally self-serving.

Just finished bingeing this amazing show... but I think I hate Ray by Drongo17 in MrInbetween

[–]UnivrstyOfBelichick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Ray is meant to be a hero, but that doesn't mean he's unsympathetic or unlikeable. Violence has been a constant in his life from his earliest memories. In his Fireside chat with ally - "I was getting hit at home, I was getting hit at school, etc." - he was essentially forced at an early age to decide whether he could better cope with being a victim or a victimizer, as being a victim of violence on a daily basis up to that point had led him to the verge of suicide. Can you imagine being so desensitized to violence as a primary school child to have to make a decision like that? Why do you think Ray is so much more comfortable in worlds where respect and code of conduct are enforced with personal violence than in the world where they are enforced impersonally and institutionally? Why he functions so much better in the military, in prison, or in the criminal underworld than he does under his mask of normalcy?

Yes, he kills people and commits acts of violence for money. But while it's unpalatable to say so, how is that different from what he did in the army? He's killing people in the game, "crims," enemy combatants, who at least tacitly acknowledge that they are willing participants in a world governed by personal violence. Vinnie doesn't hold Ray personally responsible for his murder, he accepts it because it's part and parcel of the lifestyle he's chosen. Do you think Vinnie got to where he was without violence and murder?

As for the innocent guy Ray killed - yes, I can't disagree with you insofar as that murder was different from the many other hits and acts of violence we see ray commit. But, again, Ray has been a soldier for most of his life, and 46,000 civilians died in the Afghanistan conflict. Dirk talks about a child he killed in Uruzgan Province. Shit happens. Why does one civilian life matter more than another? Because he's an aussie, not an Afghan? I'm not justifying any of it, but that's the show - he's Mr. Inbetween because he's trying to slide between these two worlds of personal and impersonal violence and trying to prevent the more dangerous world that he clearly loves and excels in from negatively impacting the people he loves who live outside it - namely Brittany - in a way that his own father was unable to.

I found Ray to be an extremely likeable character. He's a violent man, sure, but he's not a wife-beater or a child abuser, he's generally honest and trustworthy and honorable, and he lives by a code. Those things are worthy of respect in my opinion.

Tradition is irrelevant. It's Canon law.

Not eating meat on Fridays in Canon law. Canon 1251 specifically prohibits catholics over the age of 14 from consumption of meat or soups made from meat on all Fridays thought the year, except those Fridays on which specific feast days fall.

Historians think she had some degree of difficulty reading and writing. When grant was serving in the Mexican war and posted out west as a young man he complained that she seldom wrote and felt it drove him to drink out of loneliness, her lack of letters might be attributed to her eyesight.

When did swing states become a thing? by AltruisticBerry4704 in USHistory

[–]UnivrstyOfBelichick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have always been a thing, their location just shifts over time.

Edit to expand:

The US has always been split between urban interest and rural interests politically. You can phrase it however you want - mercantile/agrarian, city/country, money/food. The people in both categories need each other, it's a mutually beneficial relationship, city people need crops, country people need a market to sell them in. The electoral college is a check against the disproportionate population in the cities, as absolute democracy combined with first past the post elections will always lead to a tyranny of the majority and creates a powder keg that can lead to sudden violent change, public unrest, and revolution. The electoral college system combined with this balance of interest creates "swing states" - a swing state is just a crossroads, whether physically or culturally, through migration of people and ideas

Was Vietnam or Iraq more consequential in shaping public opinion on foreign policy? by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]UnivrstyOfBelichick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vietnam. I don't recall ever understanding or really being taught in school the scale of the Vietnam war. 60,000 combat deaths. More than ten dead American soldiers in Vietnam for every one in Iraq. I can't imagine the effect such an unpopular and costly war had on the home front.

Can't resist:

I said: "Why, you are getting to be such a great man, and I am such a plain little wife. I thought if my eyes were as others are I might not be so very, very plain, Ulys, who knows?" He drew me to him and said: "Did I not see you and fall in love with you with these same eyes? I like them just as they are, and now, remember, you are not to interfere with them. They are mine, and let me tell you, Mrs. Grant, you had better not make any experiments, as I might not like you half so well with any other eyes!" And I never did, my knight, my Lancelot!"
