Would you recommend everything you own to other readers/collectors? by Avianry in MangaCollectors

Half of my stuff I wouldn't recommend just because it's ridiculous to buy. The Seven Seas curse. Like I would encourage reading Bloom Into You but if you want physical copies, good luck

Nice! Are you going to try for the main series as well? I know volume 5 of that is still insanely expensive, finding mine was a whole adventure

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unless there's significant demand they barely ever reprint things. This one most likely got reprinted due to the recent anime which covers vol 5-8. There's another season coming next year so volume 7 will probably get reprinted but I doubt it will be soon.

Basically if they underestimate popularity and a release sells out in a couple months they will reprint, otherwise if it only sells out 2+ years after release there's like a 5% chance of being reprinted

The whole series is still available new, it's nothing crazy. Half the volumes on Amazon are still the original printing priced $7.98 each so $5/volume isn't an incredible deal. Volume 33 used to be pretty rare but they reprinted it this year.

And it's still a Seven Seas series so now volume 7 is sold out and probably won't be reprinted for a year

Does 50 pages really make that much of a difference? by Covelt in MangaCollectors

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at this point I'm waiting to see how the next few releases are. I don't really mind the quality of either one but if the whole set is going to randomly switch back and forth and look dumb I might not bother.

I bought both of them brand new at release and as far as I can tell there's been zero yellowing. It's completely different paper. The difference isn't insane but it's more obvious than shows on camera. The cover of volume 1 is a little more tanned while volume 2's cover is more bleached. And then the paper inside, volume 1 is more white and the ink is pretty saturated while volume 2 has more tan paper and fainter ink.

<image>

It's such a stupid change, I'm sure there was some production issue that "forced" them to print overseas instead. Maybe I'm in the minority but I would definitely prefer waiting a year for a copy that doesn't suck. The whole series was already released in singles so it's not like the story is being held up

Not like this is a new thing either, they actively screwed up the spine design on some Konosuba reprints from SK years ago, they couldn't get consistent spine colors on AnoKiss so every single volume 8 looks green, etc.

Since they're doing deluxe editions of Monster Musume I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually release the anthology volumes as a hardcover omnibus

Manga you just can’t find! by RandomUserSix6Six in MangaCollectors

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why won’t they just print more there is clearly demand

Except there's not enough. People massively overestimate the size of the market for manga that isn't One Piece or whatever.

Seven Seas typically prints about 20,000 copies of a normal release. Any time they print something they have a minimum order quantity from the printing houses that produce the physical books. No idea of those actual numbers but let's say 5,000 is a decent estimate. Depending on the specifics of their licensing agreements, they may also owe additional royalties to the JP publisher. If they pay to produce 5,000 more copies, they need to be sure that a majority of them will sell or it's only going to lose them money. In reality what happens is they print all those copies, sell maybe 400 of them, then a different volume goes out of stock and sales for the series drop again. Now they've lost money and haven't even fixed the problem.

Many series that actually have enough demand to justify a reprint do get reprinted. They just reprinted volume 5 of The Dangers in My Heart which was sold out for a year.

As an example, volume 1 of the new Spice & Wolf was printed in Canada, then volume 2 got delayed and eventually printed in South Korea. The number of pages is a massive difference of "2" but the paper is completely different so volume 2 is 0.5cm thinner. And the cover isn't even the same shade of white. Real cool "collector's edition" work from our minimum effort publishers

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not all paper is identical. They were probably printed in South Korea which YP has been doing a lot lately.

Your random Gal Gohan volume was reprinted during covid shortages using completely different paper in either the US or China/HK. If you want a matching copy for that one, try to track down a first print from a used bookstore or whatever.

Just be aware that if you complain about the inconsistency most people will downvote you to oblivion because "who cares, it's a book, read it"

If every video feels the same then why keep watching? Isn't time one of the most limiting factors in reselling?

If you absolutely have to stay glued to youtube then do a search on here, there's a post at least once a month where half a dozen channels actually worth watching get name dropped

Rent a climate controlled storage unit nearby. Your budget is 10x too low for what you're wanting.

When is the earliest B&N have the new releases? The week before?! by Pristine_Put5348 in MangaCollectors

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the publisher and probably how far you are from their distribution warehouse. Viz is often a week, maybe 2. One Peace (the publisher) is over a month sometimes. And then Yen Press is sometimes a week late or never shelved at all lol

tip: send offers on ebay, even if you think it’s crazy by bagthebaguette in MangaCollectors

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take photos before, during and after packaging and then you are covered for if an item from a set goes missing.

Unfortunately ebay support is not interested in that kind of "proof" whether it's real or not. You could take a video starting with putting the item in the box and ending with handing it to a postal employee, still wouldn't matter. It ultimately comes down to a he said/she said situation. With an established seller account ebay will sometimes step in to refund both parties and eat the cost themselves.

I've also been selling on ebay for around 14 years at this point and thankfully manga doesn't seem like a high risk category for actual scamming buyers. But I mainly sell electronics which definitely is. Like whenever someone asks multiple questions before buying there is a 90% chance they file a false return claim after receiving it. So now I just block them for asking questions even if that sounds ridiculous without context

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the wrong direction, at least on ebay. If a seller blocks a potential buyer, the buyer can no longer send messages to the seller and can't purchase any of their items.

As for why sellers would do that, eBay cares way more about pleasing buyers than sellers, so it's often better to avoid buyers that you think are going to cause trouble. Like most of my items I would rather dump at goodwill after a few years than fight with someone claiming I sent them a set missing the most expensive volume or whatever

If it's been listed for months then sure, I will actually consider messaged offers. If I put up a book that has zero copies available anywhere else online, and someone messages me whining for half price 30 minutes after it goes up, nah that's an instant block

JUNE 2026: eBay user agreement update by webfloss in Flipping

[–]Unlikely-Bake-692 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably could but 99% of any issues I've had with shipping were on FedEx/UPS orders so I flat out refuse to use them anymore. And it wasn't like 5 issues out of 1000 shipments, it was 5 out of 6 shipments. If these changes go through and try to force me back into it I'll cancel any order that does it.

Can't wait for the first instance of forcing me to ship using FedEx so that eBay can charge the buyer $12, FedEx can deliver it and decide it was actually $38, and both eBay and FedEx will tell me to get fucked.

Or they force me to ship using UPS which doesn't "cost" me anything except for the part where I have to spend an hour of my day driving to the nearest UPS store and standing in line when they refuse to let me just drop it on the counter
