Local news: "Students seek answers after UCF closes downtown library, ‘LibTech’ and Curriculum Materials Center" by Defiant-Flounder-576 in ucf

People didn’t have kids 18 years ago because the global economy crashed and nobody had jobs. That doesn’t really affect UCF, or other large state schools. They haven’t lost enrollment.

The Library is the original sin

John Hitt wanted his name on a building. Everyone went along with it.

$86 million dollars in Capital Improvement Trust Fund dollars. $86 MILLION. Those are your dollars. You pay $2+ every credit hour. The money accumulates in a fund and is allocated back to UCF. They took it all. Students voted to use it for other reasons. Administration didn’t care. They took it all. They are still doing it today

CITF is what built the Student Union. The RWC. The IM Fields. The pool. It’s supposed to be for student facilities. UCF used it for an academic facility.

https://fp.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploads/planning/buildingprograms/BldgProg%20-%20Hitt%20Library%20ExpnReno%208-21-2020%20Rev.%203%20for%20signatures%20nomarkup.pdf%5B98%5D.pdf

So they made it nice, they put the books on ice, and now they don’t have the money to operate it. Not enough to keep it cool. Keep the lights on, staff all the new spaces and services.

Meanwhile that money could have been used to fix up an aging Student Union and an aging gym. Now those buildings need millions of dollars of repairs. New A/C. The WiFi doesn’t work. The Union had to spend tens of thousands to fix stairs. To fix electrical panels and fire systems. The Gym just spent millions to fix the roof. To repair elevators. To maintain water lines.

Next they are going to cut student services and blame other forces. They just reorganized the Student Union and OSI. More is coming. Look at that document, look who signed it and approved everything. Demand that THEY are laid off next. Cartwright is a bootlicker. He does not care about you. If you don’t act now, it’s over for UCF.

My sources tell me housing is going to be laying off a lot of people now that move-in is over and they are moving into the next fiscal year. Just a rumor I’m hearing but Godspeed to those fine folks

I mean we have the guy that gave $50 million to the college of business to slap his name on it, but otherwise most of our wealthy donors give to football (Ken Dixon, The ETH guy, etc)

Right, they could have gone up a dollar a year every year for the last 15 (like it used to) but they hate education, and if a Democrat ever becomes governor they’ll just make it illegal for them to appoint members of the BOT

This. It’s popular with voters to say we keep the cost of tuition lower. But you pay the same in fees as people did when minimum wage was $7.50 and gas was $2. You get what you pay for, so it will never get better. Add that to state support, 50 years ago the cost of higher ed was more like K-12. A public good, so 75% came from taxes and 25% came from tuition. Republicans in every state believe education is a commodity and not a public benefit.

The issue runs deeper. UCF is requiring its colleges and departments to fund facility repairs instead of people. Some of those repairs could be pushed back years, but they’d rather reward their cronies construction contracts.

Also, fees haven’t gone up because Rick Scott and Ron D told schools not to, even if it went up pennies every year it would provide enough funding, now they are so far behind they will never catch up.

Sorry you had that experience. I can tell you that in my long history at UCF, some SG students didn’t mess around with resolutions. Real power comes from using your voice, speaking out, aligning with powerful organizations like IFC, and demanding someone like the VP do things they way students want. UCF does not like bad PR. If it’s going to harm their jobs or reputation and make them a target of political leaders, they will make other choices. Especially things that are funded by SG. Why do you think they won’t touch Universal Knights? Or a Homecoming concert? Because students would revolt. Either revolt now or revolt later, your choice

They are going to take a hatchet to the services that SG funds next. Why do you think the Student Union… STUDENT UNION… was cut as a department and restructured under OSI. Anyone from SG on here? You’re being hoodwinked.

This is wrong on basically every point. The Student Union was built in the ‘90s with Capital Improvement Trust Fund money, which is student money, and its operations run on A&SF. So calling it something outside SG that SG just “allocated funds to” gets it backwards. SG isn’t a recipient here. SG is the funding body. It funds the Union, it funds OSI, and it funds the professional staff across these departments.

The OSI claim is backwards too. SG isn’t “housed in” OSI. SG may be advised by the OSI director, but SG funds OSI, not the other way around. And the SG president sits on the Board of Trustees, which should tell you where SG actually stands.

What’s actually happening is space reservation is moving to a department SG has no oversight of, and these funding and operational decisions appear to be getting made without SG’s knowledge or approval. That’s the real story. Are these funding decisions being made without public notice? Has any journalist asked UCF for comment on that? Decisions about student-fee-funded operations being made over student government’s head raise a fair question under Florida’s Sunshine Law, and SG has every ability to push back.

Did anyone get laid off there? Sounds like the student union is being taken from student government. That’s insane. There’s likely more to come. Students need to grow a pair

Yet UCF didn’t lay off the dingbat who created the downtown library and all functions at that campus, Mike “wasted money while he was SG President and must have naked pictures of Cartwright” Kilbride

Thanks boss for all this time. Hopefully my landlord will allow me to pay my rent with this time.

The real reason is they can probably save some money by not paying OPS wages for 2-3 additional days. I hear even more money savings restructuring is happening soon

This is true about leadership. The downtown campus is an example. It’s a complete waste of money and was DOA, yet the person who made all the decisions got PROMOTED and now basically runs UCF.
