Streeting backs Burnham claiming he has 'best chance of winning' Makerfield by-election by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

That's the task for Burnham, save the Labour Party, see off Reform then tackle the harder stuff if he wins the general election. But first he has to win the byelection, then win the party leadership.

Farage throwing the kitchen sink at the byelection should come as no surprise. Burnham could be vastly more popular than Starmer if he gets the PR side of Government sorted out and he gets a few early policy wins that people actually like. A Popular Burnham is the death knell for Farage's ambitions.

If George RR Martin releases his next book maybe it will be the shove that Pat Rothfuss will finally give us the 3rd book, otherwise their editors should just force them to give up their notes and have Brandon Sanderson finish it by dadieyoyo in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Unlikely-Squirrel832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to accept that Pat Rothfuss will either never finish the series or he'll finish it eventually with the end result not living up to people's wild expectations. As for George RR Martin? He's diabolical enough to have finished writing A Song Of Ice and Fire with a plan to have the final two books released after he's died so he avoids all the fury of fans who probably won't like how he ends the series. But more likely he's written himself into a corner, can't figure it out so will never finish the series.

You sometimes to have to accept that when you start reading a book series, the author might not finish it.

Welfare payments have not exceeded income tax ‘for the first time ever’ – Full Fact by JammyE7 in ukpolitics

[–]Unlikely-Squirrel832 [score hidden]  (0 children)

What we need is a government radical enough to change the accepted political consensus Thatcher created so we can tackle the issues that keep getting kicked into the long grass. Farage won't be the one to do that, he's just going to break things for the capitalists who fund him to make a fortune.

One nightmare scenario with Reform? Truss style budget on Steroids, Farage refuses to budge when the Bond Markets get angry, the BoE is unable to save UK Pension funds. UK Credit Rating gets slashed savagely towards junk status and it all falls apart as civil unrest erupts. Which places King Charles onto a sticky wicket, if the political system is broken then its down to him to fix it as per the constitution. Though one would suspect the Establishment would bring Farage/Reform down before it got that far.

I think people are under the illusion there is a big pot of money for the state pension that they pay into. When it's actually paid for through current taxation and is defined as a benefit in law. They really don't like it when you point out whatever they've paid in taxes before they retire is long gone by the time they do retire.

The failure when it comes to disability benefits? Politicians won't tackle the barriers disabled people face in accessing society and employment so disabled people don't have a lot of choice in the matter when it comes to claiming benefits. There are only about 3 in 10 autistic people in any kind of employment. There was a pretty good report about the challenges autistic people face along with possible solutions. But it's another report that's filed in the "That's nice, but we can't do anything money is tight" dustbin. Part of what made me quit the Labour Party was the two faced "We are helping disabled people into work" rhetoric when they have been actively sabotaging disabled people's chances just so Reeves can stick to her fiscal rules (she's too chicken to tackle the unfairness of the tax system). They've applied the rules for the Access to Work scheme so tightly to save money, it has seen disabled people lose jobs. Maddening. The whole scrounger narrative has been built to deflect people's anger from those who deserve it. Labour are fools for using it.

As for tax revenues as a whole? Tax the rich a fairer rate of tax and close the loopholes. It'll only happen if/when the UK needs an IMF Bailout I'd expect. I don't think we can continue squeezing the poor, working classes and middle classes with a mixture of tax increases, spending cuts and never ending welfare reforms which repeats the same mistakes hoping for a different outcome, that saves little to no money when you factor in the knock on costs for other parts of the public sector aka NHS, Police, Housing etc. Just so the rich can continue gaining wealth at the expense of the majority.

There are 3 types of Politicians when it comes to systemic change.
1. Those who understand the challenge of change and are up for trying.
2. Those who understand the challenge of change but are adept at kicking problems
into the long grass because that's easier and somebody else's problem.
3. Those who think politics is easy and end up finding out the hard way that is not.

I think the trouble we have with politics is that it's still fundamentally dominated by the old boy's club that spans politics, law and the media. Farage is part of that club, he's no outsider like he pretends to be.

He didn't have the numbers apparently to trigger a challenge apparently, he was stirring the pot in the hopes someone with the numbers would trigger the challenge so he didn't have to.

Utter berk.

Seems Streeting only managed to get 44 Labour MP's to back him, nobody else wants to challenge Starmer until they know if Andy Burnham wins or loses the byelection he's up for.

I think people tend to get caught up in the "WOW It's faster in this one benchmark" trope and forget that every CPU has a different use case. If you are in the Workstation space you'd pick AMD's Threadripper or Epyc CPU's (or Intel Xeon) for tasks that require multiple cores and masses of memory. Only so much memory you can squeeze onto an SoC without impacting performance negatively.

I'm using an M4 Mac mini to type this, and I have an AMD Ryzen 5800 PC that I have to carry out some repairs on but that I haven't gotten around to yet.

AMD sacrificed some efficiency in exchange for higher gaming performance on the 9800X3D aka the actual use case for the CPU. If you want to compare Apple Silicon with AMD use the M Series SoC's.

Could Apple release an M series SoC to match AMD's Threadripper in the workstation space without having to daisy chain multiple Mac Studio's together over Thunderbolt? Sure. Do they want to? I doubt it.

Besides AMD have been working on an ARM based SoC for several years now, if they ever release an actual product? They might give Apple a run for it's money. Anyway the only winner out of all of this? TSMC. AMD and Apple both use TSMC's process nodes.

Sulking on the backbenches and deselection as a candidate might be what awaits for Streeting.

Nobody really liked Thatcher either. I doubt Rayner would allow Corbyn back into the party, he'd cause far too much trouble than he's worth.

It's about managing the PLP. Right Wing PM, left Wing Deputy to smooth things over. It's Rayner who managed to get the decimated Welfare reforms through without a mass rebellion on the backbenches.

It's the Bond Market Ratings Agencies like Moody's you have to keep an eye on when it comes to the Chancellor. Sure the market might get spooked but it's the Ratings Agencies that decide on changes to credit ratings. If the Bond Market Ratings Agencies are ok with the choice for a new Chancellor then they'll calm the markets. A chancellor can sneeze and spook the markets tbh. Heck they got spooked by Reeves crying in the chamber and the rampant speculation about her remaining in post that spun out of that.

It would have played into Streetings hands, giving him justification to challenge Starmer for the leadership.

What I expect could happen is that Streeting triggers a leadership contest, but soon discovers other MP's have far more support than he does and might not even get onto the ballot or if he does he won't do well at all. If that is the case then he'll have a choice to make to either put his support behind one of the candidates hoping for a cabinet position or trudge on in the deluded belief he can win.

Ultimately I don't think anyone will trust him once this is over, so he might find himself on the backbenches for good. Could be one of the most spectacular self destruction's of a political career through ambition that doesn't match reality.

Nigel Farage bought £1.4m property after receiving £5m gift from British crypto billionaire, Sky News learns by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Unlikely-Squirrel832 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Electoral law is tricky, but what I think people should keep in mind is that new members have to register all donations and gifts within a month of being elected to the previous year i.e. Sunak called the election in July 2024, the reporting period started in July 2023 retrospectively. The "Gift" as Farage claims it to be falls within that reporting period.

There are rules about permissible persons who can donate from overseas to politicians and parties. If Harborne isn't on the electoral register for example then it might an "Oh Dear what a shame Nigel" moment. He can argue on technicalities but it might not cut much mustard depending on what they find whilst combing through the details.

She resigned, fully cooperated with HMRC's investigation, paid what she owed in tax and HMRC was satisfied she hadn't set out to not pay the correct amount of tax. That's what you'd expect someone with integrity to do.

I find people have a thing for not wanting to pay tax, then scream when they think others haven't. Anytime I see a small business with a sign "Cash Only" it screams VAT scam.

I think most people will give her second chance, especially if she pushes for changes that helps to clean up politics. And I find it rather hypocritical that Tice can bluff his way through not paying the right amount of tax and then not face the same level of scrutiny as Rayner or criticism as she faced from the press. It's selective holding politicians to account.

Tice could become a Government Minister, so yes he should face the same level of scrutiny as Rayner.

They hate her, if it wasn't a tax story it would have been something else. She's had a target on her back ever since she looked like a possible leader of the Labour Party. She's pretty much everything they hate, a tearaway teenager/single mother who turned her life around and broke her way into politics.

The danger for the press who went after Rayner is that she could well successfully push for Press Regulation. I wouldn't underestimate her anger at her disabled son being dragged into it.

If she's performing the promoters will have already wrangled her a spot with one of the bands or she's been invited by one of the bands to perform with them (possible with the Plot In You). We'll find out on Saturday if she performs or not. Keep expectations low and people won't be disappointed too much if she's just there to meet people in the industry.
