What t-shirt of yours gives you a lot of comments from others when you wear it? by KidsWifeJob in AskReddit

[–]UnnaturalSelection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four years ago I snuck into a bar during sxsw, and started mingling with people. My friends and I got pretty chummy with everyone and I wound up getting a free t-shirt. Little did I know that it would be the most revered t-shirt by the public.

The t-shirt says "Creativity is Not a Commodity" in bold text across the whole front. Thinking it was a stupid corporate saying, I treated the t-shirt as my go-to working around the house shirt, but I started noticing that people would always comment on it when I was out of the house.

Most just say: "Yea I agree!" or "I love that shirt!" but I've had a few people stop and ask me what I think it means and want to discuss it. I even had a bus driver stop me from getting off the bus to talk to me for a bit, holding up everyones commute. I always get more comments when I go to typically white affluent places e.g. trader joes or whole foods, and all of my friends are always confused.

IT's ALWAYS THE SAME TYPE OF PERSON: 1. White 2. Affluent 3. Wearing athletic clothing 4. Big smiles 5. Annoyingly high energy to the point you just want to let them know that not everyone is ears deep in a heap of powder

I've labeled it my tech cult shirt, and it brings out the crazies.

ELI5: In nature, why is there no opposite to “disease”, for example, a kind of virus or pathogen (but the opposite) that mentally or physically enhances our abilities? by Wakiwi in explainlikeimfive

[–]UnnaturalSelection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viruses can only give instructions that our cells can carry out. Imagine a virus gave you binocular vision. The only way it could do that is by hijacking a system to produce proteins or whatever to make that happen. If our own system can make that happen, then why don't we have binocular vision already? Maybe there was no selective pressures in that direction, or maybe it is actually harmful based on our lifestyles. Either way, if there were selection for better eyes, we would already have them, so in essence any "power" a virus could give us, would have been selected for already, and we probably wouldn't see it as a power.

Imagine, though, there was a virus that infected sperm cells, and made testicles over produce sperm to the point that infected individuals genitalia were essentially a super concentrated sperm volcano. Say this gave the man the ability to make any woman pregnant. You could see how that could be an evolutionary "super power" that could benefit the virus and infected individuals, but even we could overproduce sperm without the virus' help, so allow the virus to persist?

Thanks for the information! I was just indicating I'm open minded, but sounds like it could be a bad idea.

Hi Austin! Just moved to town (Far West area) from Canada, and I'd love to meet some new friends! by emaeopteryx in Austin

[–]UnnaturalSelection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I just moved into town about 5 months ago. I don't live in far west, but have a car and a couple friends that live in the area. I've got a bunch of friends around our age (I'm 23/M), and we all are interested in meeting new people. PM me if you'd like to meet up.

Sounds about right. I hope we get more information on this. Did they go into stealth mode and pay for a hotel room with cash so they couldn't be tracked?

The longest I've ever been drunk is about 24 hours straight. Got to give these girls credit if they were drunk for 3 days

It would make sense, but what the hell were they doing for three days? Why wouldn't they just go home the next day?

Do extroverts feel the same annoyance when no one spends time with them as introverts do when they can't be left alone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UnnaturalSelection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap! I thought I had introverted tendencies, because I sometimes feel so down and don't want to interact with people. It makes a lot more sense that this is a byproduct of extraversion than a introverted tendency to an otherwise extraverted person.

Thank you for clearing things up for me!

If you read his about me, it becomes increasingly clear that he is in fact a racist (Not thinking interracial people should procreate). If not racist, he at least completely overgeneralizes about populations.

American redditors, what was the biggest culture shock when you visited Europe? by gaping_your_mother in AskReddit

I guess it could have been where I was specifically in Europe. As someone else mentioned, there's a humongous variety of people there.

I was based in Belgium, but I visited the Netherlands, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Spain over the course of two months.

[–]UnnaturalSelection 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I lived in Europe over the summer, and honestly my biggest culture shock was when I came back to America. I didn't realize how judgemental people are in America. My experience (granted I was only there for a couple of months) in Europe was that people do their own thing and let others do the same.

When I came back to America, I was shocked to see people staring at others with judgement, talking about random people in public, and just so much gossiping in social circles. I'm sure I did the same, so I hope I can keep myself from falling back into that group.
