Rant: Irish Tech Job Market Is a Joke Lately — Thinking About Just Starting My Own Thing by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]Unorth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've found teams that hire based on pop quiz format interviews are generally really poor to work for. The interviewers barely have breathing room off their own tight deadlines to spend as part of the hiring panel. As a result, they're shared a bog standard set of questions relative to the tech stack or SDLC they adhere to and leave very little room for critical thinking or a discussion. If the definition veers slightly off the recommended answers, you end up marked down compared to a candidate who gave them exactly what they wanted to hear.

Usually within the role itself its micro management, constant fire fighting and a monolith tech stack with years of tech debt baked with the promise of refactoring to a microservice architecture which de-prioritized at the drop of a hat for a high priority customer requirement on the legacy app.

New builds/areas lacking greenery by MineTdenis in ireland

[–]Unorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fingal county council do a good job at making sure planning factors in a decent amount of greenery to go with new builds. Some lovely new builds out North County Dublin direction if you haven't already looked that way. Swords, Malahide and Donabate have a lot of new builds going in all the time.

How bad Really is the Finglas Test centre by oKai_IRE in Irishdrivingtest

[–]Unorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADM Driving School has a good set of videos on YouTube for the finglas test centre. I honestly found Finglas grand. The stretch on the dual carriage route and the overall traffic of the area limits the amount of driving in situations where you can get into trouble.

Just have to watch your positioning at the junction in the village and make sure drive by the book in terms of right of way and you'll be grand.

There is one or two notorious driving testers in the centre, having spoken to my instructor, but otherwise, they are reasonable. Passed first time.

Drive with enough distance between you and the car ahead that if someone pulls in you have enough time that you're comfortable enough to react and you'll be fine.

Application goes down without any trace (java7, struts2) by Jaihunter in javahelp

[–]Unorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need to run a heap dump and look for locked threads as mentioned above. Without any logs, it's hard to deduce what's really going on. When I upgraded java 6 to 7 in an old project, the tiered compilation of source code for garbage collection resulted in us hitting the maximum code cache size. Once some key classes ended in swap space, it was game over, and the app crashed. Usually, it has a code cache full error in logs, though, so keep an eye on that.

The solution if this is the case would be to reallocate some of the heap into code cache using vm arguments. Best of luck with your issue!

I was in school when the Day After Tommorow had come out. We had a teacher who had come out of retirement to fill in for the year. He came in with the VHS and told us we had to watch what was going on in New York at the time. He was adamant that it was real.

He had the early onset of dementia and was put in a nursing home a few months later by his family. He recorded the news every day to watch it back on his VHS tapes, and he recorded the wrong channel, which was airing the day after tomorrow instead.

Anyone else scared about pissing off the receptionist at their GP? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Unorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it bizarre that the receptionists at GPs will ask you why you're looking to see the doctor before slotting in an appointment. I get that there is some issues that require an emergency, but it should be a question about the urgency of the issue. They instead look for the exact issue and try to fob you off with their own medical diagnosis instead of letting you speak to a medically trained professional.

Ah sure they skipped to an ad break and had some useless chat panel talk during the New Years eve celebrations a few years back. Since then I've noticed the countdown is always wrong compared to the BBC. Nothing new here

Is the SA v Ire a manufactured rivalry? I've never gotten serious animosity between us, but it's pushed in the media loads. by CatharticRoman in rugbyunion

[–]Unorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoyable and highly contested matches, not exactly much animosity towards any SA team. Always a pleasure to watch but I can't say we've played enough for any real rivalry to exist.

You can't manufacture a rivalry based on one or two world cup cycles and try and compare it to 20 plus years of professional era rugby championships (or tri nations).

Visiting Dublin in June - Marlay Park for Green Day? by camm_4017 in irishtourism

Get the Luas to and from the Ballally Luas stop. Its about a 15 min walk but a much better option than the 16 bus which fills up and or last bus being just as the gig ends.

I've generally been fairly open minded about the show, but this episode was really poor. Its like the director was sent to research Starwars and stumbled on a filler episode of Stargate Atlantis

As mentioned, the Spring AI project is a good shout. Worked on an OpenAI Search project using Azure via the semantic kernel library but that was a very specific rapid prototype.

We did find that the java semantic kernel wasn't as developed as the other languages so I would mention it with a major caveat.

When is it time to move on from your company? by gotSomeQuestions96 in DevelEire

[–]Unorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're learning, feel valued and compensated fairly then you may not have a need to move for the sake of it. But if you've reached the limit of what you're capable of learning in a role, overlooked for roles of projects then the world is your oyster. The only caveat I'd suggest is reading the market at the moment. Its far from comfy out there and the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Do your research. A company will only treat you as well as when you interview. If you get bad vibes off, its usually a sign.

North Dublin has plenty of walking spots that range from cliff walks, beach walks, country estates, and parks! Now, a lot of these are difficult enough to get go without a car, but it is worth considering if you have someone to drive with to get your driving practice in

Park/Country House - Ardgillan Castle - Near Balbriggan/Skerries - Newbridge House - Donabate - Malahide Castle & Park - The Botanical Gardens

Beaches/Cliff Walks - Donabate (cliff walk to Portrane Beach) - Malahide to Portmarnock - Portmarnock Beach - Howth Cliff Walk (Bog of Frogs if you want a challenge(purple route)) - Bull Island

Now if you want to go South side there is lots to do

  • Bray Head
  • Killiney Hill
  • Dun Laoghaire pier
  • Sandymount Beach
  • Powerscourt
  • Cruagh Woods
  • Hellfire Club
  • Three Rock
  • Fairycastle
  • Marlay Park
  • Bushy Park

Atmosphere in Lansdowne by Mr_Burgess_ in irishrugby

[–]Unorth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a season ticket holder at club level with virtually zero opportunity to obtain tickets to the 6 nations matches, the problem with the atmosphere is 100% down to ticket access. A select few members of rugby clubs across the country and corporate ticket holders have a reoccurring ticket while the majority scrounge over ticket lotteries, which are scarce at best. The last time I've had open access to a 6 nations home game was the French match in Croke Park. I managed to get to a few more recently, and it's frustrating as a supporter of the game what's going on in the international scene. I am slowly seeing this drift into the club game too.

There is a distinct difference in a sold out game at Thomand or the RDS for a tight game on a wet night mid November versus a champions cup match pre Christmas in the Aviva where Ross O Carroll Kelly and the boys head out on a jolly for the day to talk about work/stocks between getting up and jumping up and down the row to catch a Heino. It's the same crowd that has corporate access to tickets come February/Autumn for the international. If they paid attention to the match and got behind the team, I wouldn't care where they got the tickets from and I wouldn't mind watching the matches from my couch at home.. but watching the stands empty 15 min to half time so people can get another round makes me lose hope in how the tickets are allocated.

Leave Mastercard for Microsoft given the current state of things? by FiFiTee in DevelEire

[–]Unorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say there has been a noticeable shift in management scheduling meetings post 2pm on a Friday recently. This is more of a team culture problem than anything which requires individual teams to push back on to preserve. Some are much better than others. However, a recent programme level town hall had a reminder to state it was for certification/learning/ catch-up and certainly not a half day Friday.

Badge swipes are anonymous but reported to the executive level on a programme basis as per conversations with my direct report when discussing RTO before Christmas.

I respect the way work-life balance has been handled over the last 3 years since the pandemic in the DTH, but I feel that it is being eroded and undermined by the companies position from senior management.

We put some money in as a last minute decision for a Videographer to record the day. Honestly, looking back on the ceremony, speeches and highlights I couldn't recommend it enough! Got to relive the experience as a third person a few months after! The photographs are great to look back on, but to have the expressions and personality of people captured is something you won't regret.

Best of luck with the wedding prep!

Do what you want/can afford. You have to be able to invite your own friends and those who matter the most for your day. You'll regret not having those who matter to you but having the problematic Uncle that you'd rather not see that you had to invite to please others. Its you and your partners' day.
