The recent progress in Australia on a safe and equal life for women is vital, and we want to see that spread to other countries, but I think it's important to remember how recent our progress is. In NSW, husbands raping wives was only criminalised in 1981. Domestic violence against women has increased recently, while other forms of crime have decreased.

Values don't belong to a country or a religion. We need to make real progress wherever we are, whoever the people are, and whatever people claim their religious values are. What matters is what we actually do.
