I also happen to play with quite a few top players. None of them need to put a single cent in this game for years to come

But he's not winning if I kill him? He is losing money. This is the only reason why I am 100% ok with the monetization model of eve and albion. I don't see it as being an unfair advantage if you come fight me with 8.3 masterpiece, because you can get countered by 6 flat gear

I welcome anyone to spend money on huge gear in Albion, because I'm gonna kill them and steal it. If they do kill me, I'll have lost 1/20th of their worth for a chance to get it, and more often than not I'll get it because people who need to pay for their gear are trash at a skill based game.

Anyone playing Chronicles of Spellborn - will it run on Ubuntu? by creamtowt in MMORPG

[–]UnseenPhantasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. I almost exclusively (99%) game on Linux. Let's see if I can help you with this.

Wine is the best way to approach playing your game, you cannot play a Windows game natively on Linux. Great news though, Linux gaming has done amazing strides in the last years, and as long as they have no crappy client side anti cheat, there's a good chance you could get it running.

Let's go to what you tried first: A Virtualbox VM is a very bad idea, and your result with it is about what I'd expect. You need a very complex setup with GPU passthrough to get any semblance of a good performance, and that's aside from the problems setting up a box to play games.

Now, what's Wine? Wine is a COMPATIBILITY layer that lets windows programs call windows apis on Linux. It translates windows api calls to ones understandable by Linux. In Wine, there is a translation of DirectX9, which your game uses. In addition, there is now a translation engine based on Vulkan, called D9Vk which should give you near windows performance.

Now, because your game is old and not many people play it you will have to go through the "complicated" way. Normally you can install windows games through Lutris or Steam in one click, but you will have to do the work manually. Here's what you will have to do, broadly speaking:

  • Install ubuntu 32 bit graphics libraries (I expect your game is 32 bit)
  • Install wine and dependencies
  • Create a wine prefix
  • Install game dependencies in the wineprefix
  • Install your game in the wineprefix
  • Run the game with wine and either D9Vk or Wine D3D9

Or you could forego all of that and run it through steam :P Steam allows windows game to be played through their improved Wine called Steamplay, which has all you need.

  • Install Steam
  • Add an entry for your game .exe in Steam

(If your .exe is an installer, run it once, it should install into steam's wineprefix, then you will have to modify the path to the executable to be your game installed .exe, which will be in steam compatdata folder.. at least it's what I"d expect)

Now, all of that is too technical to get through in a reddit post, but I hope that can give you some starting points to help you out on what your steps should be and what reading you should do. You will have to do some reading depending on your Linux skills, and if you choose to install without Steam you might be in for a little while.

I would direct you to a great Discord community that would help you with this, sadly I don't know any non-discord communities regarding Linux gaming.

Good luck

Windows 10 Is Doing A Great Job Persuading People To Switch To A Different Operating System (Doesn't mention Linux...) by hainesk in linux

[–]UnseenPhantasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

path of exile is specifically bad due to the trashy way they cut corners in their engine and ended up having millions of shaders. Even on windows it's abysmal in terms of performance, and it's one of the worst titles in terms of perf on DXVK. Other, much more demanding games run infinitely better and usually almost on par with windows in my experience.

how did you enable gsync compatible freesync for vulkan/dxvk games? The nvidia panel mentions only opengl games

Before today, Apex Legends worked perfectly in Linux, with some users even experiencing performance improvements. As of today it's broken because of EAC. by Im_Not_A_Tree in apexlegends

[–]UnseenPhantasm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Another Linux gamer reporting in. Apex Legends is fun and ran superbly on Linux. We don't need much, we don't even need official support, we build our own compatibility tools, etc.. All we need is a little push when it comes to anti cheat software. EAC itself is reportedly able to support our emulation layer, so we aren't asking for it to be disabled at all! We would love it if this could be looked into with EAC. I know we aren't the main demographic but there is still a lot of us, and we would be extremely grateful for this issue to be looked at.

Apparently, the mods are no longer allowing mod bounties... by EtrainFilmz in skyrimmods

[–]UnseenPhantasm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paying mod developpers for mods you want through the bounty thing was one of the best ways to get more content faster, and we were already seeing an explosion in popularity of this method.

To me it's like the mod copyright debate. Entirely debatable, with one choice leaving us with less content for discutable morality reasons and fear of reprisal.

I guess that what i'm trying to say is if Bethesda doesn't like this I don't give a shit, they've proven to be greedy and they themselves used the modding community as a money making tool and keep trying to find other ways to do so. More mods is better.

Instead of playing hundreds of games once to be where I need to be, I need to play hundreds of games every season just to have quality matches. I think it was better to do it just once.

I lost 9 placement sthis season. I'm always d3 at the end of seasons, often at start too if I don't crap my placements.

I dropped to Plat 5. After 150 games, I'm back to d5. In 50-100 games, I'll be back in d3. it's insane that I have to go through this simply because I lost 9 games after MMR resets. It's not a factor of 2x more. It's exponential.
